MATERIALS 5400-501 Lion Brand Martha Stewart Crafts Extra Soft Wool Blend: Petal Pink 1 Ball (A) 5400-503 Lion Brand Martha Stewart Crafts Extra Soft Wool Blend: Gerbera Daisy 1 Ball (B) Lion Brand Knitting Needles- Size 5 [3.75 mm] Lion Brand Crochet Hook - Size F-5 (3.75 mm) Lion Brand Stitch Holders Large-Eye Blunt Needles (Set of 6) Additional Materials Fiberfill stuffing GAUGE: 20 sts + 28 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles. STITCH EXPLANATION: NOTES: M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop - 1 st increased. ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased. 1. Giraffe is knit in one piece then stuffed and seamed. 2. A diagram is provided to clarify construction.
STRIPE SEQUENCE *Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) 2 rows with B, 6 rows with A; rep from * for Stripe Sequence. GIRAFFE First Side Note: First side of Giraffe is worked from bottom of legs up to head. Rear Leg With A, cast on 7 sts. Rows 1-3: Knit. Row 4 (WS): Purl. Change to B. Beg Stripe Sequence. Rows 5-22: Work in St st (k on RS, p on WS).
At the end of Row 22, Sl these sts to holder. Front Leg Work as for rear leg but do not place sts on holder. Body Row 23 (RS): Continuing Strip Sequence, knit across front leg sts, cast on 5 sts, with RS of rear leg facing, knit 7 sts of rear leg from holder - 19 sts at the end of this row. Row 24 and all WS Rows: Purl. Row 25: K1, M1, k to end - 20 sts at the end of this row. Row 27: Knit. Rows 29-36: Rep Rows 25-28- 22 sts at the end of Row 36. Beg Neck Row 37 (RS): K1, M1, k4, sl rem 17 sts to holder for back - 6 sts remain for neck. Rows 38-40: Working over 6 neck sts only, work in St st and Stripe Sequence for 3 rows. Row 41: K1, M1, k2, k2tog, k1. Row 43: Knit. Rows 45-52: Rep Rows 41-44 two more times. Row 53: Rep Row 41. Row 54: Purl. Cut B. Shape Head Row 55: Working only with A, cast on 4 sts, k the sts just cast on, k to end - 10 sts at the end of this row. Continue working with A for Rows 57-66. Row 57: Knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1-9 sts at the end of this row. Row 59: Knit. Row 61 (Top of Head): Knit. Second Side Note: Second side is worked from head down to bottom of legs. Shape Head Row 63: Knit. Row 65: Knit to last st, M1, k1-10 sts at the end of this row. Beg Neck Change to B, beg Stripe Sequence. Row 67: Bind off 4 sts, k to end of row - 6 sts at the end of this row. Row 68 and all WS Rows: Purl. Row 69: K1, ssk, k to last st, M1, k1. Rows 71: Knit. Rows 73-84: Rep Rows 69-72 three times. Join First and Second Sides Note: When working next row, fold piece across Row 61 for top of head. Row 85: K1, ssk, k to end, k across 17 back sts on holder - 22 sts at the end of this row. Row 87: Knit. Row 89: K1, ssk, k to end - 21 sts at the end of this row. Rows 90-97: Rep Rows 86-89 two more times - 19 sts at the end of Row 97. Divide for Front and Rear Legs Row 99: K7 for front leg, bind off 5 sts, k7 for rear leg. Rear Leg Working over 7 sts of rear leg only. Work in St st for 19 rows. Knit 3 rows. Bind off. Front Leg From RS, rejoin yarn to 7 sts of front leg. Work as for rear leg. FINISHING Beg at back of Body, seam first and second sides of body, legs and head. Stuff lightly through opening at back of head and neck before sewing closed. Ears (make 2) With A, thread blunt needle with about 8in (20cm) of yarn. With threaded needle, pass through two stitches on Giraffe's head, leaving a small yarn loop between stitches. Knot yarn loop close to head. Rep for 2nd Ear. Mane Thread an 18 in. (45.5 cm) strand of B into blunt needle. Secure free end with a small st at back of Giraffe's
head.with next st, make a 1/2 in. (1.5 cm) loop of yarn and anchor that loop in place with a small stitch across base of loop. Continue to make loops along back edge of neck to body. Tail Cut 3 strands of B about 9 in. (23 cm) long. Hold strands together and fold in half. Use crochet hook to draw fold through back end of Giraffe, forming a loop. Pull ends of strands through this loop. Pull to tighten. Divide into 3 groups of 2 strands each. Braid for about 2 in. (5 cm). Knot ends.
