INTRODUCTION Welcome to our second book of Sonny Terry style Riffs. This book is a further attempt to delve into the style of Sonny Terry. We ve selected riffs we like, slowed them down, tried to catch the essence of his playing, notated them, and then we play each riff at three different speeds so you can learn it more easily. I was captivated by Sonny s playing when I first came across him in the 90s, and I ve been trying to get close to his style ever since. He s been a major influence on so many other players - Brendan Power (the guy that started me off teaching) says Hearing Sonny Terry play blues harp was my inspiration to play harmonica, and I still love to play straight ahead, nononsense Blues and so do I! The harps you will need for this book are G, A, Bb, and C. As before I should remind you to listen to the man himself and you will hopefully recognise all the riffs you will learn from this book. We ve tried to get the feel of Sonny s playing but haven t tried to get every detail down. If you want to zoom in further get in touch with Joe Filisko and he ll help you out. These riffs are similar to those found in Sonny s playing in general and some are inspired in particular by his versions of Pick a bale of cotton can you spot them? The exercises at the front of the book are mine and are designed to get you warmed up for the real thing and have also been simplified to give you the skills to play like Sonny. Paul is playing guitar on this album to accompany the riffs (and drums) and by altering your balance control you ll see how to make the harmonica more or less prominent depending on your preferred mix. If you enjoy this /Book there are two other Sonny style books in our series that you might like. Once we started the research it was hard to stop! The more I look into Sonny s style the more I see so we just kept going and ended up with enough riffs to start a fourth book - however we ll stop at three. Probably. Enjoy working through this and please give us feedback - tell us what you think of it! Ben and Paul July 2010. A big thank you to Grammy Award winner Peter Madcat Ruth for giving us permission to use his track Georgie Buck and also to Wayne T. Helfrich for his photos of Sonny Terry. Ben uses Hohner Marine Band harmonicas customised by Richard Sleigh of the Joe Filisko guild: www.rsleigh.com, and Hohner Marine Band Deluxe customised by Jon Vaughan at customharps.co.uk. Many thanks to these experts for keeping us in tune and with the correct just intonation. Paul uses Hofner & Fender guitars, AER amplification and Line6 effects. We would like to thank Joe Filisko for his guidance as always! www.filisko.com 6

He went through the school system of exams and performances, finally escaping the mandatory classical repertoire with the discovery of Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie. He was a minor third addict at fourteen and still has a passion for jazz and blues. Godfather Dennis Corble gave Ben a harmonica at the age of 7 thus unknowingly sowing the seeds of a lifelong love of this instrument! Paul is a composer/arranger, multi-instrumentalist and teacher. He is a former pupil of Bishop Wordsworth School, Salisbury and former member and leader of the Wiltshire Youth and Salisbury Junior Orchestras on violin. He also played in rock and folk bands in the Salisbury areas from the age of 15 onwards and later graduated from Trinity College of Music, London in violin, piano and composition (1976-80). 14.99 (UK) Recommended price 9 781907 058356 Sonny Terry 2 Blues Riffs Hewlett & Lennon ISBN: 978-1-907058-35-6
