RECENT DEVELOPMENTS OF INTERNATIONAL ARBITRATION AND THE STATUS OF ARBITRATION IN SULTANATE OF OMAN Conference to be held at Intercontinental Hotel Muscat, Sultanate of Oman Under the patronage of his excellency DR. Ali Bin Masoud Al Sunaid Minister of Commerce & Industry Venue Intercontinental Hotel, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman Objective A conference about the recent developments of international and regional arbitration. This conference will give full exposure to all ICC activities, and in particular, ICC Dispute Resolution and ICC ADR. It will be an occasion to expose the status of arbitration in Sultanate of Oman and in the GCC region. PROGRAMME 1st Session: 9:15-9:45 Definition of Arbitration and its importance as an alternative dispute resolution Arbitration and ADR as methods of dispute settlement are expanding and their importance is growing nowadays. These methods are becoming the most preferred way of dispute resolution among the international and national companies worldwide. Given their rising importance, this session will define and explain the different ways of dispute resolution such as arbitration, mediation, etc. The opportunity will be seized to discuss the importance of arbitration in commercial disputes in general, as well as the development of arbitration institutions. Q&A 9:45-10:15 2 nd Session: 10:15-10:45 The characteristics and specificities of ICC Dispute Resolution Services The International Court of Arbitration is the world leading arbitration institution. During this session, the panellist will take the participants through the characteristics and specificities of ICC arbitration and ADR. The new ICC arbitration and ADR rules will be presented. Q&A 10:45-11:15 Coffee Break 11:15-11:45 3 rd Session: 11:45-12:15 International Arbitration and Arbitration in the GCC The GCC have been experiencing a financial and economic growth lately. In this context, arbitration has just started to settle in the region, given its complementary nature with economic development. The panel will discuss the current status of regional and national arbitration laws within the GCC, as well as the role and rising importance of institutional arbitration in the region related to the expansion of arbitration in the GCC. Q&A 12:15-12:45 4 th Session: 12:45-13:15 The future of arbitration in Sultanate of Oman During this session, full exposure on the current status of arbitration in Sultanate of Oman will be presented. SPEAKERS BIOGRAPHIES DR AMEL K. ABDALLAH Dr Amel K. Abdallah is, since her nomination in 2012, the Assistant Dean For post Graduate Studies and Research in Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) College of Law. She graduated from the Faculty of Law in Alexandria University where she received her L.L.B. in 1995 and her L.L.M. in 1997. From 1997 to 2002 she was a lecturer of business law in the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport in Alexandria, Egypt, where she gave lectures in English, in Business law and international transport law. After receiving her PhD in 2003 from the faculty of law in Alexandria University, Dr Abdallah joined the faculty of Legal, Economic and Administrative Sciences in University of Jendouba, Tunisia, as a lecturer of private law, where she gave lectures in banking law, capital market, civil law and law of international credit operations from 2004 until 2008. In 2008 she joined SQU College of Law as an Assistant professor in private law department, where she gave lectures in different field of commercial law in Arabic and English, Banking law, Arbitration, Bankruptcy, international law of investment, international trade law. Dr Abdallah is a member in Egyptian Bar Association since 1995 and she published many articles concerning commercial law, arbitration and investment in Arabic and English. She is specialized in Business law, International law of investment, Law of capital Market, Banking Law, International commercial law, Arbitration law and Bankruptcy law. ANDREA CARLEVARIS Andrea Carlevaris became Secretary General of the ICC International Court of Arbitration in September 2012. Mr Carlevaris is also Director of the ICC Dispute Resolution Services. Before joining ICC, Mr Carlevaris was a partner in the Rome office of Bonelli Erede Pappalardo. Mr Carlevaris joined Bonelli Erede Pappalardo in 2003 and became partner in 2010. Prior to Bonelli Erede Pappalardo, Mr Carlevaris was counsel at the Secretariat of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, a member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration and of the ICC Commission on Arbitration. Mr Carlevaris is a member of the Steering Committee of the International Arbitration Commission of the Union international des Avocat (UIA) and of the Board of Directors of the Italian Association for Arbitration (AIA). He is one of the founders of the Italian Forum on International Arbitration and ADR (ArbIt). He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Rome (La Sapienza), where he received a doctorate in international law in 1999. The same year he was admitted to the Italian Bar. Mr Carlevaris is the author of numerous articles and regularly contributes to several journals. In 2011, Global Arbitration Review named him one of the most prominent international arbitration lawyers under the age of 45 ("45 under 45").

LARA HAMMOUD Lara Hammoud has been practicing international arbitration for over 12 years. She is an independent arbitrator acting in cases under the auspices of leading international and regional arbitration institutions. Before concentrating her career on her activity as an arbitrator, Ms Hammoud was a Senior Associate in Shearman & Sterling s International Arbitration group. She joined the Abu Dhabi office of the firm in 2008 and has been based in Abu Dhabi office since then. Before joining Shearman & Sterling LLP, Ms Hammoud spent six years at the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). She was for four years member of the Secretariat of the ICC Court of International Arbitration, where she managed international arbitrations. She was then promoted to Director of ICC Dispute Resolution Services and the Secretary to the ICC Commission on Arbitration. Ms Hammoud is a French qualified lawyer and holds a DESS in International Commercial Law from the University Paris X and an LLM in Commercial Law from the University of Bristol. She speaks Arabic, English, French and Italian. Ms Hammoud is the writer and editor of numerous articles and books relating to international arbitration. She alsoregularly appears as speaker in international conferences and arbitration workshops. SAMI HOUERBI Sami Houerbi is the Director of the ICC Eastern Mediterranean, Middle-East and Africa ICC Dispute Resolution Services, where he is in charge of raising awareness about Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms throughout the region and promoting ICC Arbitration and ADR Rules. Prior to that, he was member of the Secretariat of the International Court of Arbitration in Paris, where he was directly involved in the administration and managing ICC arbitration proceedings. Mr Houerbi is a registered lawyer of the Tunis Bar Association and the Head of the Arbitration Department at Boussayène Knani Houerbi Law firm (www.bkhassocies.com), which areas of practice include mainly: Corporate Law, Arbitration and Litigation. He holds a post-graduate degree in international law from the University of Paris II and an LL.M in German Law from the Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich. His working languages are Arabic, English, French and German.

PHILIP PUNWAR Philip Punwar was called to the Bar of England & Wales by the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple in 1989 and elected a Master of the Bench of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple in 2013. He is a Dubai based partner in the international arbitration and dispute resolution group of Baker Botts LLP. Philip is an experienced civil and common law practitioner. Over the past 25 years he has appeared in a wide range of commercial proceedings in court and arbitration under English, UAE, DIFC and International law. He has recently acted in arbitration proceedings arising out of aircraft charter agreements, agreements for the provision of armed security and logistics in areas of conflict, subdevelopment agreements, construction agreements, operating agreements, distribution agreements, production sharing agreements and diverse joint venture agreements. Philip has also advised clients seeking to pursue investment treaty claims. He is an active arbitrator and mediator. Philip has been involved in a number of government initiatives in the UAE relating to arbitration. From 2007 to 2008 he worked with the UAE Ministry of Economy on the production of the 2008 draft Federal Arbitration Law. During this period he was also a member of the Dubai International Financial Centre's 2008 arbitration law steering committee. Since 2010, Philip has been a Vice- President of the ICC UAE Arbitration Steering Committee, in which capacity he has represented the ICC UAE at meetings of the ICC Commission on Arbitration & ADR. He is a former Vice- Chairman of the UAE Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a Chartered Arbitrator and a CEDR Accredited Mediator. Philip has lectured on international arbitration for the University of Pretoria and the Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa (AFSA) annually since 2003 and for the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) since 2006.
