Undercoat the entire piece with black gesso, this adds another level of protection for your wood and also provides a great surface to paint on. The black gesso will mute the paint colors as well. We will be using a number of different stamps to paint the pattern on the tray. To load your stamps use a small sponge tool to tap the paint onto the surface of the stamp. This will take a little practice to achieve the right distribution of paint, as well as how wet to keep your paint while prepping the stamp. Work quickly, pounce the paint onto the surface of the stamp and take the stamp directly to the wood surface. Using one of the clear handles helps to stabilize the stamp and allows for greater control when stamping with paint. Once you have positioned your stamp on the wood surface press with even pressure to transfer the paint to your surface. If you do not get a good image it might be that your paint is drying too quickly on the stamp, you can remove the paint from the wood surface by wetting the paint with a bristle brush and wiping it off with a paper towel. Do this quickly before the paint has time to set up and begin to dry. Then reapply paint to your stamp, position the stamp on the surface and press the image onto the surface. Base the entire piece with Napa Red; this will take 5-6 coats to get good coverage. Base the top of the handles with Desert Cactus. Transfer the honeycomb pattern to the handles and paint with Honey Brown. If you own a honeycomb stencil or the stamp listed you might want to use it for ease of painting. Prep the cone flower in the Daisy Stamp set with 2 artistsclub.com
Lamp Black using the instructions listed above and stamp onto the top of the handles of the tray. Thin Moon Yellow down to a transparent consistency and wash into the petals of the flower. Thin Orange Flame down to a transparent consistency and wash into the head of the flower. Thin Neon Scorching Yellow down to a transparent consistency and highlight the petals of the flower. Float shade around the flower with Milk Chocolate. Prep the leaves from the Daisy Stamp set with Desert Cactus and stamp on either side of the tray handles, thin Desert Cactus down to a transparent consistency and wash onto the stamped leaves. Using the Dream Stamp, in advance decide which portion you would like to see on the tray, only prep the areas of the stamp that you want to use. Prep the surface of the stamp with Desert Cactus and stamp onto the top and bottom of the tray area. I found that this large stamp in particular performed beautifully when attached to the clear handle. Base the center of the tray with Light Buttermilk, float shade around the outer edge of this area with Honey Brown. Transfer the honeycomb pattern and the outline of the postcard to the center of the tray and paint the honeycomb pattern with Honey Brown. Float shade around the postcard with Milk Chocolate and deepen the shadow with a glaze float of Asphaltum. If you own a honeycomb stencil or the stamp listed you might want to use it for ease of painting. PAINT THE POSTCARD: Base the postcard with Buttermilk and antique the postcard by randomly dry brushing Honey Brown over the entire postcard. Dry brush highlight by dipping your dirty brush from the previous paint application into Warm White and dry brush over the previous paint application reloading your brush as needed. Float shade the center of the postcard using a back to back float on the center line with Honey Brown. Randomly dry brush light highlights on the postcard with Electric Pink. Transfer the line art to the post card. Float shade around the design elements with Asphaltum. Fill the Fine Line Painting Pen with Lamp Black and line the lettering. Practice first; this pen takes a little time to get used to, if you have never used this pen before look at the manufactures instructions for ease of use and practice on scrap paper. Base the bee hive 5 cent stamp with Warm White and float shade around the bee hive with Indian Turquoise. (Note the pattern photo for placement.) Base the bee hive with Moon Yellow, float shade with Honey Brown. Dry brush highlight the right hand side of the hive with Electric Pink and using a SL line highlight with Warm White.
