Appendix f Materials: Prezi: http://prezi.cm/kphahtbgmn5v/titles/ Article: The Bigraphy f Ray Bradbury http://www.bigraphy.cm/peple/ray-bradbury-9223240?page=2 Ray Bradbury was an American fantasy and hrrr authr wh rejected being categrized as a science fictin authr, claiming that his wrk was based n the fantastical and unreal. His best knwn nvel is Fahrenheit 451, a dystpian study f future American sciety in which critical thught is utlawed. He is als remembered fr several ther ppular wrks, including The Martian Chrnicles and Smething Wicked This Way Cmes. Bradbury wn the Pulitzer in 2004, and is ne f the mst celebrated authrs f the 21st century. He died in Ls Angeles n June 5, 2012, at the age f 91. T supprt himself while he wrte, Bradbury sld newspapers. He published his first shrt stry in a fan magazine in 1938, the same year he graduated frm high schl. The next year, he published fur issues f his wn fan magazine, Futuria Fantasia. Nearly every piece in the magazine was written by Bradbury himself; he used a variety f pseudnyms t try t hide the fact that the magazine was a virtual ne-man shw. "I was still years away frm writing my first gd shrt stry," he later said, "but I culd see my future. I knew where I wanted t g." Bradbury sld his first prfessinal piece, the stry "Pendulum," in Nvember 1941, just a mnth befre the United States entered Wrld War II, fllwing the Japanese attack n Pearl Harbr. Ruled ineligible fr military service by his lcal draft bard because f his visin prblems, Bradbury became a full-time writer by early 1943. His first cllectin f shrt stries, Dark Carnival, was published in 1947. That same year, he married Marguerite "Maggie" McClure, whm he met while she was wrking as a clerk at a bkstre. McClure was the breadwinner in the early days f their marriage, supprting Bradbury as he wrked n his writing fr little t n pay. The cuple had fur daughters, Susan (1949), Ramna (1951), Bettina (1955) and Alexandra (1958). In 1950, Bradbury published his first majr wrk, The Martian Chrnicles, which detailed the cnflict between humans clnizing the red planet and the native Martians they encuntered there. While taken by many t be a wrk f science fictin, Bradbury himself cnsidered it t be fantasy. "I dn't write science fictin," he said. "Science fictin is a depictin f the real. Fantasy is a depictin f the unreal. S Martian Chrnicles is nt science fictin, it's fantasy. It culdn't happen, yu see? " Televisin and cmic bk adaptatins f Bradbury's shrt stries began t appear in 1951, intrducing him t a wider audience.

Bradbury's best-knwn wrk, Fahrenheit 451, published in 1953, became an instant classic in the era f McCarthyism fr its explratin f themes f censrship and cnfrmity. In 2007, Bradbury himself disputed that censrship was the main theme f Fahrenheit 451, instead explaining the bk as a stry abut hw televisin drives away interest in reading: "Televisin gives yu the dates f Naplen, but nt wh he was." Despite his apparent distaste fr televisin, Bradbury advcated fr film adaptatins f his wrk. He wrte numerus screenplays and treatments, including a 1956 take n Mby Dick. In 1986, Bradbury develped his wn HBO televisin series, allwing him t prduce adaptatins f his shrt stries. The series ran until 1992.
