Measuring & Ordering Guide A Proper Fit For Superior Performance. Before You Get Started Inspect the old window. Double check the existing window opening prior to ordering a Thermo-Fit Replacement product. Is the frame in good shape? Check the frame around the existing window for signs of damage or rot. Any damaged or rotten window components must be replaced prior to installation of a new window. Is the opening square? Measure diagonally from corner to corner. If the diagonal lengths are off by more than 1/4" the new window should be sized slightly smaller so that it can be installed plum, level and square. SEE DETAILED MEASURING INSTRUCTIONS ON PAGE 5. Is the opening deep enough? All Thermo-Fit series windows have a frame width of 3-1/4". The opening must be at least 3-1/4" from back side of blind stop to back side of interior finish stop. If the opening is less than 3-1/4" you may have to alter the interior stop or do a full-frame replacement. 3-1/4" If all of these requirements are met a insert window can now be ordered, if these are not met you may have to order a full frame replacement. Full frame replacement is where the entire existing window is removed from the wall. Which generally means siding patching and all new interior trim is required. Installing Your New Thermo-Fit Windows Removing The Old Wood Sash STEP 1 STEP 2 STEP 1. Score the interior stops along the jamb or where they contact the jamb with a utility knife. STEP 2. Carefully remove interior stop and set aside for reuse later. STEP 3. Apply pressure to the vinyl or aluminum jamb liner to relieve tension and remove lower sash. STEP 4. Note: If old window uses a cords/cables balance system, cut the balance cords/cables that run to the lower sash before removing lower sash. These cords/cables are attached to either a counter weight or spring balance system. Use caution when cutting these cords/cables as they may have tension on them. Apply pressure to the vinyl or aluminum jamb liners to relieve tension and remove upper sash. STEP 3 STEP 4 Note: If old window uses a cords/cables balance system, lower the upper sash to expose the cords/cables then cut the cords/cables that run to upper sash. STEP 5. Score and remove the parting stop. This will not be reused. STEP 6. Remove jamb liners. STEP 7. Clean-up opening, blind stop and scrap any old paint or caulking from frames and stops. STEP 8. Test fit the new Thermo-Fit Replacement window by placing the bottom of the window on the sill first and pushing unit into the opening so that it's tight up against the exterior blind stops. Measuring & Ordering Guide Installing Your New Thermo-Fit Replacement Window STEP 9 STEP 10 STEP 9. From the interior, apply a bead of silicone sealant onto the exterior blind stop at the head and sides. STEP 10. Set the new Thermo-Fit Replacement window into the existing frame sill first. Be sure it makes solid contact with the exterior blind stop. STEP 11. Shim side jambs 4" from the corners and at 8" intervals to ensure plumb square. For double-hung s, check the measurement at the check-rail and shim if needed. STEP 12. Fasten window through the shims at all four corners with #10 x 2-1/2" pan head screws (provided with your window), pre-drill the holes with a 1/8" drill bit. For double-hung s, fasten the window through the jambs at the top, check rail and bottom making sure the screws do not interfere with the balance shoe. In most cases if you install the screws behind the sash stops (inside track for top and outside track for bottom) this will allow the sashes to operate freely. When installing screws at the check rail use the inside track but make sure to stay above the check rail. STEP 13. Insulate around new frame with loose fiberglass or non-expanding foam. STEP 11 STEP 12 STEP 13 STEP 14 STEP 14. Replace interior stops that were removed earlier and place a bead of silicone between the new window and interior stops. STEP 15. On the exterior, insulate between the sill and the new window with loose fiberglass or non-expanding foam and install the sill expander. Cut the sill expander to correct length and install STEP 16. Caulk the exterior of the Thermo-Fit Replacement window to the existing frame. Do not caulk the sill. Caulking the sill can trap water and cause the sill to rot. STEP 15 STEP 16 Instructions shown apply to most typical window replacements. Outside Sill Measuring & Ordering Guide Measuring Your Existing Window Frame STEP 1. From inside your home, measure the width of the existing window frame. Measure between the jambs at three spots: top, middle and bottom. STEP 1 Jamb Width Jamb STEP 2 STEP 2. Now measure the height of the existing window frame. Measure from the head jamb to the sill at the sill's highest point, normally right behind the stool. Again, measuring in three spots: right, middle and left side. Head Height Stool Write down the smallest measurements you have recorded for width and then height in the chart on back of brochure. Remember the WIDTH first than HEIGHT when recording window and door measurements. Width = Height = Measuring For A Full Frame Window When measuring for a full-frame window unit, you are trying to determine the rough opening. The rough opening is the unfinished wall or opening where a window or door will be installed. It is surrounded by studs on either side, header on top and rough sill B A Jamb at the bottom. It is the framing to which the window will mount. A B Header STEP 1. Remove the inside trim to bring studs, header and rough sill into view. Rough Opening C Sill STEP 2. Measure the width of the opening from stud to stud and record the measurement. C STEP 3. Measure the height from the bottom of the header to the top of the rough sill and record the measurement. STEP 4. STEP 5. Measure the depth of the opening and determine the wall depth. Record the measurement. Repeat for each window and bring the rough opening measurements into your nearest Thermo-Tech Window dealer. They will then be able to show you the options available and determine the correct window size.
