Balance Sketchbook Pages

Balance Page Requirements: Using LARGE text TITLE your page- Balance. Add a tab to your page, write Balance on your tab Book Definition: Balance is the principle of art concerned with equalizing visual forces, or elements, in a work of art. In your own words: (Using your best knowledge describe what balance is) Add a magazine example OR a drawn example demonstrating balance Add a border or decorative elements to your page. Be CREATIVE!! (-2pts) (Number ALL pages)

Visual Balance & Imbalance Page Requirements: Visual Balance -(as your title) Visual balance causes you to feel that the elements have been arranged well while imbalance causes a feeling of uneasiness. Visual forces can be arranged equally on either side of a central axis. Draw or find magazine examples of balance and imbalance (1 each). Decorate your page with a border or decorative designs. Be creative! (Number ALL pages)

Informal Balance To achieve informal balance or a more casual effect, artists must consider the visual weight, or attraction, that elements in a work of art have to the viewer s eyes. There are six factors that influence visual weight. (1) Size: A large shape or form appears heavier than a small shape. (2) Contour: An object with a complicated contour seems heavier than one with a simple contour. (3) Color: High-intensity colors have the most visual weight. (4) Value: The stronger the contrast in value between an object and the background, the more visual weight the object has. (5) Texture: An object with a rough texture seems heaviest. (6) Position: A small object far from the dominant area of a work can seem just as heavy as a large object close to the dominant area. By taking these weight differences in account, artists create works that appear naturally balanced.

Central Axis Page Requirements: Title your page, Central Axis (This page does not need a tab) Book definition: Central axis is a dividing line that works like the point of balance in the balance scale. This axis can be vertical or horizontal. Your own words! Draw a tree and then draw it s central axis and label it central axis Central axis Central axis (Number ALL pages) Examples of Vertical Central Axis

Central axis Horizontal

Radial Balance Requirements: Use LARGE text to TITLE your page Radial Balance. (does not require tab) Book Definition: Radial Balance, in which the forces or elements of a design come out from a central point. Your own words: ((Free write, using your best knowledge describe radial balance)) Add a Magazine example OR a drawn example Add a border and/or decorate your page. Be CREATIVE!! (- 2pts) (Number ALL pages) NOTE: Radial balance is a form of symmetrical balance.

Requirements: Write and draw the following in your sketchbook Formal/ Symmetrical Balance Symmetry is a special type of formal balance in which two halves of a balanced composition are identical, mirror images of each other. Informal/ Asymmetrical Balance Informal balance, or Asymmetry, involves a balance of unlike objects. (Number ALL pages)

Another example (The blue line is the central axis of each design or composition)

Today s Exit Slip Question 1: Which DESIGN demonstrates Imbalance? Question 2: Which DESIGN demonstrates Balance? REFLECTION: Using complete sentences describe why? DESIGN A DESIGN B

Today s Exit Slip Question 1: Are DESIGN C and DESIGN D to the right demonstrating Radial or Asymmetrical Balance? DESIGN C DESIGN D Question 2: Is DESIGN E Asymmetrical or Symmetrical? DESIGN E REFLECTION: In your own words describe why or how you came to this conclusion (Ques. 2)

Assignment: Now that you know how to differentiate between the different forms of balance in art you will create your own designs demonstrating balance. These designs will be used for a linoleum block print. *Please see Printmaking Presentation

Standards and Objective Standard 2.0 Creative Expression 2.1 solve a visual arts problem that involves the effective use of the elements of art and principles of design Students will learn about the principle of art Balance. They will learn to differentiate between the different forms of balance in art and learn to apply balance to their own works of art.
