Questions: Read each of the questions below. Answer each question in complete sentences with correct grammar and spelling to the best of your ability. Make sure that you support your answers with evidence from the novel. 1. Marlee is forced to tell Betty Jean, her parents, and Sergeant Pike what happened at the rock crusher. What are the effects of this confession? 2. Why is Pine Bluff going to have to wait? 3. Answer BOTH questions: a. According to her speech, why didn t Mother speak up about integration sooner? b. What does Mother use at the end of her speech to help convince others to speak up? 4. Why have things been awkward at school since Sally s birthday party? 5. Analyzing the Author s Point of View The author,, has a point of view that is distinct or separate from Marlee. We come to understand the author s point of view by looking at her choice of language, how she portrays her characters, as well as her inclusion of certain events. Reread pages 227-229. What is Levine s point of view of CROSS? How can you tell? Support your answer with evidence from the text. 9. Writing a Persuasive Speech After the speech at Forest Park, Marlee s parents plan on driving her to Pine Bluff to live with her grandmother. Write a mini speech that Marlee could deliver to her parents, persuading them to let her stay in Little Rock. Include the following: 1. A strong introduction where Marlee states her desire to stay in Little Rock 2. At least three reasons why Marlee should stay 3. A strong conclusion

b. Which of the two reasons do you think is true? Explain your answer. 10. Exploring Suspense There are many ways that authors create suspense in their novels. Suspense is created when an author builds and prolongs an inevitable crises, all the while pulling the reader further into the plot. Reread chapter 47. Identify three moments that lead to the suspenseful climax of Marlee being locked in the trunk. Sketch those 3 moments (as if creating a comic strip) and label them.
