DAVE MELLON Dave Mellon received his B.A. from Indiana University in 1990 and his J.D. from Samford University, Cumberland School of Law in 1999. After law school he clerked for Presiding Judge William C. Thompson on the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals. Dave then entered private practice and was a shareholder in a large Birmingham law firm for several years where he represented employers and management. While in private practice he also served as a Deputy Attorney General from 2006 to 2013 representing many state agencies. Dave is now University Counsel for the University of Alabama System and primarily represents the University of Alabama at Birmingham ( UAB ) campus. UAB is the state s largest single employer, with 18,000 students, 23,000 employees and an annual economic impact exceeding $5 billion. UAB is also home to the third largest public hospital in the United States. Dave s litigation practice includes general civil litigation, preventative training, and litigating employment law claims brought under multiple statutes such as Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, 42 U.S.C. 1981, 42 U.S.C. 1983, ADAAA, ADEA, FMLA, FLSA, and USERRA. He works closely with Administration personnel regarding compliance with the Clery Act, FERPA, HIPAA, FCRA, and issues related to data protection, privacy, and security.
