Study at St John s Flow Chart Year 7-9 Year 10 - RoSA Career HSC University HSC University HSC For students intending to go to university and therefore require an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank). Students can research university courses to determine which subjects are recommended for their desired courses, and the previous year ATAR cut off for entry. Students intending to attend university need to complete 12 units of Board Developed Courses (BDC) in Year 11 and at least 10 Board Developed Course units in Year 12. Examples of careers requiring a university degree include: Teacher (Secondary or Primary School), Engineer, Nurse, Accountant, Psychologist, Physiotherapist, Scientist, ADFA careers, Veterinarian, Surveyor, Lawyer, Pilot, Chemist, Dentist, Doctor, Optometrist, Graphic Artist, Journalist, Musician, Paramedic, Town Planner, System Analyst, Architect, Builder. Career HSC For students intending to complete the HSC and gain employability skills as part of their course of study and enhance entry to various career paths. The course of study can include Board Endorsed Courses which count towards the HSC but not the calculation of an ATAR for university entry. It may include a VET or EVET course. Examples of careers that may require non-university study, further training or an apprenticeship: Preschool Teacher, General Defence Force careers, Animal Attendant, Pilot, Accountant, Counselor, Graphic Artist, Retail Manager, Journalist, Massage Therapist, Musician, Ambulance Officer, Real Estate Agent, Information Technology Support Technician, Construction (e.g. carpenter, plumber and electrician), Office Worker, Hospitality Industry Worker, Sports Trainer, Hairdresser, Beautician, Mechanic, Metal Worker (e.g. welder/boilermaker), Farm Hand, Retail Worker. page 3

Career Pathways Below are some suggested patterns of study that can be used as a guide for various career and university pathways. Some points to note: 1. All students must choose one course in Religion: either, I or. 2. All students must choose one course from either, or English Studies. 3. It is not possible to choose both and. University HSC Pathway The pattern of study for this pathway is chosen from the general list of subjects that clearly meet the NESA criteria for attaining an ATAR (it may include only one VET Framework course). Career HSC Pathway The pattern of study for this pathway may include VET, EVET and Category B subjects. Subjects from the overall list may also be included. It may or may not lead to an ATAR depending on the subjects chosen. For students choosing this pathway, a HSC is achieved. University entry is not envisaged in the short term. This pathway allows certain exit points validated with a RoSA Certificate for students who choose not to complete a HSC. Possible Exit Points Include: Full-time employment Further Full-time study (eg. Glossary ATAR Board Developed Course Board Endorsed Course HSC Tertiary Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank; a measure of a student's overall academic achievement in relation to that of other students and helps universities rank applicants for selection into their courses. A course developed by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and counts towards the calculation of an ATAR for university entry A course endorsed NESA and counts towards the HSC, but not the calculation of an ATAR for university entry Higher School Certificate Post-secondary education; university Board Developed Courses These courses have been developed by NESA to count towards the calculation of an ATAR for university entry.
