SM-2 Ⅱ DIVE UNIT for EASPEAKES Operating Manual Thank you very much purchasing STAX s SM-2Ⅱ model. To enable you to use the unit in complete safety for many years, please read these instructions carefully. After reading them, be sure to keep them in a safe place together with the product guarantee. EVE 4 6 POWE 2 8 DIVE UNIT FO EASPEAKE CAUTION This product operates with a high voltage. It is extremely dangerous to attempt to dismantle or modify the unit in any way, and under no circumstances should any such attempt be made.

To Ensure Safe Use of Your Product Illustrations for viewing prior to use. This manual makes use of various illustrations which have included to enable you to use your product with complete safety. The situations likely to arise if these illustrations are ignored and the unit is used in the wrong way may be classified as follows. Please read the text and make sure you understand it fully. Warning Caution We have shown situations in which ignoring these illustrations and using the unit in the wrong may result in death or serious injury. We have shown situations in which ignoring these illustrations and using the unit in the wrong way may result in personal injury and situations in which material damage may arise. This sign informs you of situations that require precautions (including warnings). The example on the left indicates precautions against electric shock. This sign informs you of a prohibited action. The example on the left indicates prohibition on dismantling. This sign informs you of an action which must invariably be performed. The example on the left indicates removal of the plug from the power socket. Warning Do not take out the power plug or the earpiece speaker plug with wet hands. Doing so may result in electric shock. Use only the specified power source. Do not modify, forcibly bend, twist or pull the power cord. Do not block the radiator vent on the top of the unit. Do not insert metallic objects, liquids or any other objects into the SM-2II driver unit. Do not touch the ear speaker s output terminals. If the unit begins to emit smoke or an odd smell, stop using it immediately and turn off the power. Continued use in such a condition may result in fire and electric shock. It is dangerous to attempt to repair the unit yourself. If the unit needs repairing, always consult your dealer or the Stax service department. Do not remove the back lid or the cover. epairs and inspections inside the unit should be entrusted to the store where you purchased the product or to an authorized distributor. Do not dismantle or modify the unit. Caution Do not put the product in any of the following places. Doing so may result in personal injury or may damage the unit. A place subject to vibration or shock or on a slope. A place directly exposed to sunlight. A place with large amounts of water, moisture or dust. A place with extreme variations in temperature or close to a source of heat emission (e.g. stove, heater, etc.). Do not place heavy items on top of the unit. Doing so may unbalance the unit, causing it to tip over or fall down and thus cause personal injury. Do not drop the unit or submit it to shock of any kind. Do not raise the volume too high. istening for a long time at a high volume may result in damage to your ears. For the sake of your ears and for the sake of the product itself, we would recommend listening at a moderate volume. -2-

Features SM-2II is the exclusive power amplifier that was designed to drive an electrostatic type earspeaker of STAX. SM-2II uses the output stage of an emitter follower to realize low impedance and increase the dynamic range in the high frequency. At the input-stage, a simple two-stage configuration using low-noise FET makes it possible to achieve a natural sound quality with a lot of information. SM-2II is made of a DC amplifier configuration not employing a coupling capacitor. Use the electronic part which considered sound quality / performance. SM-2II makes it possible to use earspeakers with PO bias specification and electret-type earspeakers. Parallel connecting terminals convenient for connecting with other devices are provided. Method of Connection The SM-2II is high sensitivity with built-in volume in a input. Therefore, connecting directly even to the output terminal of audio equipment and, AV equipment/personal computer etc. it is able to use. See Page, "Examples of Connection", for further details. Make sure that the power switch is turned off before connecting. Connect the output terminals of the source to SM-2II with attached pin cord. Place the convex part of the earspeaker plug upwards and insert into the earspeaker socket. Turn the volume knob right and adjust to the appropriate volume. You can adjust balance of ight & eft when you turn a knob of and separately. Advice on Connections )When taking a signal from the preamplifier or pre-main amplifier, by connecting to the EC OUT terminal for the tape deck, it is possible to switch between several sources with deterioration in sound quality kept to the minimum. 2)If it is not possible to obtain sufficient playback volume using the EC OUT terminal, connect to the PE OUT terminal. When connecting to the PE OUT terminal, the best results can be obtained by turning up the volume on the main unit to the maximum and adjust the volume on the pre-amplifier or the pre-main amplifier. )If there is one set of PE OUT terminals, attach the power amplifier to the output terminal connected in parallel. The volume on the power amplifier cannot be adjusted using the volume control on SM-2A. 4)If the above connections are not possible, can be heard from a headphone jack by connecting a commercially available headphone jack to the conversion cable of an CA plug. Precautions for use SM-2II operates at a high voltage. It is dangerous to remove the top cover and the base plate or to use in a place where the unit may get wet or where there is a large amount of dust. Since the unit emits heat, nothing should be placed on the top cover. Use in a well ventilated location. Since there is very little distortion on earspeakers, it is tempting to turn up the volume to too high a level. Care is needed since listening for a long time at a high volume may well damage your ears. Hum noise occur if the unit is placed close to a power amplifier, etc. --

Example of connection 4 EVE 6 Pre-amp./ Pre-main amp. POWE 2 8 DIVE UNIT FO EASPEAKE When add a driver unit The input impedance on the amplifier will fall if the power of the pre-amplifier and pre-main amplifier is not turned on, and the source signal may get distorted. If this occurs, turn on the power of the amplifier. oud speaker Use example of parallel output terminal When one source, connect to directly SM-2II Earspeaker VT, D, DVD player etc, EC OUT or PE OUT CD/MD/SACD/DVD-Audio player etc, Pre-amp./ Pre-main amp. Cassette/DAT etc. When connect to an existing system Television / monitor audio output When connecting to an existing system, connect to the EC OUT output terminal for tape deck recording purposes on the pre-amplifier or the pre-main amplifier. If it is not available for use, connect to the PE OUT terminal. Select the source you wish to listen to using the pre-amplifier or the pre-main amplifier input selector or the EC OUT selector. When connecting to a portable equipment, etc., not equipped with a pin jack terminal, sound can be heard from the headphone jack use a commercial headphone jack to CA-plug conversion cable. --

Troubleshooting Notes No sound: Is the AC cord properly inserted into the power socket? Is the power switch on? Is the ED on the front of the panel on? Is there anything wrong with the connecting cable? Has the connected source been selected in the case of the pre-amplifier and the pre-main amplifier selector switch? Sound Distortion: Has the AC power voltage fallen to an abnormal level? Distortion will arise if the volume is turned up too high. Imbalance between left and right: Is the input signal normal? Is the cable connection faulty? If there is imbalance between left and right, coordinate by adjusting the dual-axis knob. When the volume is at the minimum level, there may be differences on either side in terms of the position at which the sound actually emerges. There is no cause for this concern since this is not a fault. Humming noise: Are the input terminals properly connected? A humming noise may occur if the earth side of the cable is loose. If a humming noise can be heard, trying connecting the earth of the main unit and the earths, etc., of the other devices. Is there a faulty connection? Is the power voltage at the prescribed voltage. Humming may be caused because of interference between two or more devices. Is there a device using a large transformer, an electric cooker, etc., in the vicinity? Create more distance between the devices.
