There were 85 in attendance for John Daniel s talk on the outlook for the oil business in 2011. The February technical meeting will be held this Thursday and our guest speaker will be Mr. Jeremy Strausbaugh with Halliburton. Jeremy is Halliburton s local Account Repre- sentative for Completion Products/ Tools. He will be discussing the latest tools and technologies for horizontal shale well completions. The advancement in completion tools is no doubt one of the most important developments in making horizontal shale plays economic. We have had two talks this year about shale developments from an operator perspective so it will be in- Kevin Jeffries SLB 864-4707 Kevin Killian Patterson 747-6843 Jeff Quintana Oxy 763-6086 Carl Simonson Chevron 654-7206 Pat Sullivan Halliburton 334-3600 Tim Zdarko Aera 665-5356 teresting to now hear a talk about shales from the service side of the business. I also want to thank Pat Sullivan and everyone else involved with making the Semi-Annual Steve Thomas Sporting Clay shoot on January 21 st a great success. We had 30 teams compete and we raised close to $8,000 for our scholarship fund. We will not have a technical meeting in March. Instead we have the 2 nd AADE Invitational Golf Tour (continued on page 2)

February 2011 Page 2 (continued from page 1) nament on March 18 th. Dave Guerrero is once again running the golf tournament this year and has started sending out invitations to our sponsors. The tournament should be another great day of golf, food, and fun at Sundale, as well as another opportunity for us to raise important scholarship funds. Please join us at this month s technical meeting to learn more about new completion technologies for horizontal shale wells. I hope to see all of you at Coconut Joe s Banquet hall on the 17 th. February 2011 Page 3 About the speaker: Jeremy W. Strausbaugh, works for Halliburton Completion Tools in Business Development. He is a graduate of the University of San Diego with a BA in International Relations and served two years in Romania while in the Peace Corps after graduation. Jeremy has most recently worked in the Williston Basin Business Development, involved in areas of new design for completion and drillable tools. He has also served as a technical advisor in Australia; helping to run Halliburton s first sliding sleeve and swellable packer job on land. Jeremy is responsible for supporting new technology and business growth for Halliburton Completion Tools on the West Coast. Jeremy W. Strausbaugh Halliburton Account Representative Completion Products/Tools Abstract: Operators are continually looking for ways in which to efficiently maximize their production. There are many ways to do this including open hole completions, sand control, plug & perf in cased hole, tubing conveyed perforating, steam injection, and countless others. The key to maximize production is to understand what type of formation is being developed and then in turn figure out the best completion method. Recently, shale formations in particular have been yielding great gains because the operators along with the service companies have been able to work together to design a wellbore that will give its greatest production with the technology available. Presently, the technology and engineering proving to be the most successful the shale formations is horizontal well completions that compartmentalize target zones for hydraulic fracturing. The technology and tools used in horizontal completions is ever changing. Once operators realized the benefits of drilling a horizontal section, compartmentalizing specific zones, and hydraulically fracturing each zone a new challenge was presented. How to increase the number of zonal isolation points in a horizontal section? The solution is to use a type of intervention-less type of completion that would allow for maximum stimulation, also known as a PinPoint Completions. PinPoint Completions in a horizontal wellbore combines a completion liner with external packers; open hole, inflatable, or swellable packers, for zonal isolation and either shifting sleeves or plug & perf to place the treatment into the compartmentalized formation. With more than 100 horizontal completions run in the Bakken Shale in the past three years, PinPoint completions for hydraulic fracturing has achieved industry and world-wide recognition as a leader through is maximization of shale formations with reliable solutions through technology.

February 2011 Page 4 Lucky Member of the Month Travis Adams My journey in Bakersfield started in1989 after leaving the Imperial Valley. I grew up in Holtville, Ca., just east of El Centro. After moving to Bakersfield I attended North High School from 1990-1994. During my four years at North High I participated in football and soccer, but golf was my passion. I played golf all four years of highschool and continued pursuing golf at Bakersfield College. My father introduced me to golf at a very young age and golf continues to be an important part of my life. After junior college I continued my education at San Diego State University graduating with a The AADE would like to thank John Daniel for another great presentation. I think all of us are looking forward to a good year. There is a lot going on this time of the year and we kicked off the year with another great sporting clay shoot. I have attached the shoot results if anyone is curious. Also, the 2nd AADE Invitational golf tournament will be coming up March 18th at Sundale C.C. and I m sure Dave has brewed up another great event. We will not be having a Technical Forum Meeting in march due to the degree in Business Administration. Upon moving home to Bakersfield I worked in the hospitality industry at two country clubs here in town before going to work with GEO Drilling Fluids. Moving into the oil and gas industry was a great move. Over the last seven years I have ran mud throughout California from Brawley in the Imperial Valley to Grimes in the Sacramento Valley working for many of the operators in California. I moved into the office at the beginning of 2009 and have been handling re- NEWS BRIEFS golf tournament, but there will be a technical conference on March 17th at the Double Tree Hotel (More info to come!). I have included in the newsletter a flyer for Black Gold Productions Murder Can Be Habit Forming which is being performed at the Masonic Temple (1920 18th St. two blocks west of the padre hotel). Please refer to flier for dates and times. Tickets will be available at Tuesday nights API dinner as well. Also, I attached a job posting for a Senior Drilling Engineer with Plains Exploration and Production. Please see attachment gional sales since then. My wife, Julie, and I love the Bakersfield area and have no plans on leaving. We have two daughters, Courtney and Jenna. Courtney is 2 years old and Jenna is 8 months and are always keeping us on our toes! I look forward to working with all of you for a long time to come. Thanks for everything!!!! for details. All of you received your enrollment for the National AADE Convention and we encourage your attendance. Please continue to show your support for the AADE and attend our Technical Forum meetings. This is a great place for networking! Don t forget to RSVP to Ariana. Travis Adams Office: (661)325-5919 Email: travis@geodf.com
