General Purpose Construction Adhesive INSTALLATION These installation instructions are for use in the installation of bronze stair nosings types: BT-175, BT-300L, and BT-400L. Balco, Inc. recommends that these stair nosings be installed from top tread down. These systems are designed to be either surface mounted to the stair treads, flush mounted to the stair tread, or castin-place. The stair nosings shall be installed as follows: STEP 1. Review Balco, Inc. approved shop drawings for types and locations. STEP 2. STEP 3. If the anchor holes have not been predrilled into the stair nosings at the factory, select a nosing, and mark the location for the anchor holes on it (see Figure 1). Anchor holes are spaced 12" o.c. with an anchor hole at a nominal 3" from each end of the stair nosing. Repeat Step 2, as necessary, until the locations for all the anchor holes are marked on all of the stair nosings. 2

Revised 12/08/05 STEP 4. STEP 5. STEP 6. STEP 7. STEP 8. STEP 9. If required, drill the anchor holes into the stair nosings at the locations marked in Steps 3 and 4 (see Figure 2). If the stairs are concrete, proceed directly to Step 14. If the stairs are wood and if the stair nosings are to be mounted onto the surface of the stair treads, (BT-300L or BT-400L) proceed directly to Step 6. If the stairs are wood and if the stair nosings are to be mounted flush with the stair treads (BT-175 or BT-300L), router the area on each stair tread for the installation of its stair nosing (see Figure 3). Ensure that each routered area is at the proper elevation and that it is straight, level, even, and the proper dimensions. Select a stair nosing, and place it into its installed position on the stair tread. Ensure that the nosing is level, plumb, and properly aligned. Using the nosing as a template, mark the locations for the anchors on the stair tread (see Figure 4). Standard anchor spacing is 12" o.c. with an anchor 3" from each end of the stair nosing. Remove the nosing from its installed position and, drill the anchor holes into the stair tread at the locations marked in Step 7. Remove all dirt and debris from the stair tread. Ensure that the treads are clean. STEP 10. Select the stair nosing, and apply a minimum 1/8" bead of construction adhesive (by others) to its underside (see Figure 5). Apply the adhesive to the full length of the nosing in a zigzag pattern from the front of the nosing to its back edge. STEP 11. Place the nosing back into its installed position. Ensure that the anchor holes in the nosing are properly aligned with the anchor holes in the stair tread. STEP 12. Attach the nosing to the stair tread using the fasteners provided by the factory, type5 fasteners, (see Figure 6). STEP 13. Repeat Step 6 through Step 12 for each stair nosing. This completes the procedures for the installation of the bronze stair nosings to wood stairs. STEP 14. If the stairs are to be concrete and if they are to be formed with a blockout for the installation of the stair nosings, prepare the blockouts for each stair nosing in accordance with standard industry practices and all applicable requirements (see Figure 7 and Figure 8). Ensure that each blockout surface is at the proper elevation and that it is even, level, straight, and the proper dimensions. STEP 15. If the stair nosing installation is a retrofit condition, inspect the stair treads to ensure that they are ready for the installation of the stair nosings. All stair treads that are worn and dished need to be re-leveled with a quick setting and self-leveling compound (see Figure 9 and Figure 10). STEP 16. If the stair nosing installation is a cast-in-place condition, proceed directly to Step 26. STEP 17. Select one of the stair nosings, and place it into the properly installed position in the blockout or on the stair tread surface. STEP 18. Using the stair nosing as a template, mark the location of the anchors on the stair tread (see Figure 11). 5

Revised 12/08/04 STEP 19. Remove the stair nosing from its installed position, and drill the anchor holes into the stair tread at the locations marked in Step 18. STEP 20. Remove all dirt and debris from the stair tread. Ensure that the treads are clean. STEP 21. Select an insert, part no. PPA21, for each anchor hole, and press and insert into each of the anchor holes until its top is flush with the installation surface (see Figure 12). STEP 22. Select the stair nosing, and apply a minimum 1/8" bead of construction adhesive (by others) to its underside (see Figure 5). Apply the adhesive to the full length of the nosing in a zigzag pattern from the front of the nosing to its back edge. STEP 23. Place the stair nosing back into its installed position, ensuring that the anchor holes in the stair nosing are properly aligned with the anchor holes in the stair tread and ensuring that the stair nosing is level, plumb, and properly aligned. STEP 24. Attach the stair nosing to the stair tread using the fasteners (part no. B31/81) provided (see Figure 13). The B31/81 is screwed into the PPA21. STEP 25. Repeat the procedures provided in Step 17 through Step 24 until all the stair nosings have been installed. STEP 26. If a floor finish material is to be installed in conjunction with the stair nosings, install the material at this time (see Figure 14). Install the floor finish material in accordance with the floor finish material manufacturer's installation instructions. This completes the procedures for the installation of stair nosings using type7 anchors. STEP 27. If the stair nosing installation is a cast-in-place condition, select a stair nosing. STEP 28. Select a type8 anchor, part no.'s STNWA, B76S3, and HJN14, for each anchor hole in the stair nosing (see Figure 15). STEP 29. Attach each anchor to the stair nosing by aligning a STNWA with an anchor hole in the stair nosing, inserting a bolt through the stair nosing and STNWA into the jam nut. Tighten the jam nut so that the STNWA is firmly affixed to the bottom of the stair nosing (see Figure 16). Repeat this procedure until each anchor hole in the stair nosing is provided with an anchor. NOTE: COATING THE EMBEDDED END OF THE BOLT WITH A HEAVY COATING OF GREASE WILL PREVENT THE CONCRETE FROM STICKING TO THE BOLT, MAKING SUBSEQUENT REMOVAL OF THE BOLT AND STAIR NOSING EASIER. STEP 30. Repeat the procedures in Step 27 through Step 29 until each stair nosing has all of its anchors affixed to it. STEP 31. Prepare the riser forms for the stairs in accordance with standard industry practice and all applicable requirements. Ensure that the riser forms are straight and true. Straight and true riser forms will help ensure proper installation of the stair nosings. STEP 32. Pour the concrete to form the stairs. 8

Revised 12/08/04 Figure 16 Figure 17 Figure 18 10

Revised 12/08/05 NOTE: THE USE OF VERY LARGE AGGREGATE OR CONCRETE WITH A VERY LOW SLUMP WILL MAKE INSTALLATION OF THE STAIR NOSINGS DIFFICULT. STEP 33. Select one of the stair nosings, and, ensuring that the anchors are properly positioned, place the nosing, with attached anchors, into the fresh concrete (see Figure 17). Ensure that the front edge of the nosing is flush with the riser form or at the dimension indicated on the details from the front edge of the stair tread.. STEP 34. Gently work the nosing into the concrete until the back edge of the nosing is level with the finished edge of the tread. Work the nosing into the concrete until it is level, plumb, flush with the tread, and at the proper elevation. To provide a stable installation ensure that the stair nosing anchors are securely set in the concrete and that the concrete is surrounding them (see Figures 18). STEP 35. Repeat the procedures given in Step 33 and Step 34 above until all the stair nosings are installed and properly positioned. STEP 36. After the concrete has taken its initial set, remove the riser forms, and finish the concrete riser flush to the stair nosing front or as otherwise specified. This is important to ensure that the riser has a clean finish. 11
