CAUTION Sensitive Electronic Devices To avoid damaging electrostatic-sensitive components, make sure you are grounded when handling them, store modules in antistatic packages, and handle circuit boards and cards by the edges only. WARNING Dangerous Voltage There is a risk of potentially hazardous electrical shock; use extreme caution. WARNING Be absolutely certain that optical equipment at both ends of a fiber is off before performing any procedures. Even when a device is not powered, laser beams may be present in incoming fiber. Lasers can cause tissue injury, including permanent eye damage. Avoid direct contact with the end of optical cable when it is disconnected from a receiver or patch panel. Introduction 5

Doc. 2244001, Rev. D Diamond Line Series Overview Headend Equipment Optical Station Transmitter Receiver Figure 1. in a Network Diamond Line series amplifiers are located downstream of an optical station. The Diamond Line series offers two types of amplifier: Diamond Line 1 is a trunk amplifier, similar to the TNA series trunk network amplifier. It offers one low-level, high-performance RF output for trunk applications and two high-level outputs for distribution networks. Each secondary output has a post-amplifier hybrid; the main output is coupled from the interstage hybrid. Diamond Line 2 is a distribution amplifier, similar to the a GNA series global network amplifier. It offers two equal or three unequal high-level RF distribution outputs. It uses two post-amplifier hybrids, one for the main output and one for secondary outputs. A plug-in output port selector lets you choose either or both secondary outputs. Diamond Line series amplifier modules may be installed in a 9-NH series housing. (See 9-NH Series Amplifier Housing, starting on page 49.) 6 Introduction

Doc. 2244001, Rev. D Diamond Line Features and Benefits Diamond Line series amplifiers offer these features and benefits: Feature Wide operating range High-output option High-current capability Covered plug-ins Excellent return-path performance Accurate return setup Easy upgrades Accurate test points Response equalizer location available Forward and return level control Powering path features Benefit Both 750 and 870 MHz models are available. Reducing the number of actives increases network reliability and reduces operating costs. Diamond Line amplifiers typically achieve 65 db hum modulation while continuously passing 15 amps; they can withstand 25 amps for two hours. Field-accessible covered plug-in equalizers and attenuators come with guides that simplify installation. On-board return-path circuitry offers improved compression point and bit error rate (BER) for digital-loaded traffic over a discrete amplifier design. Each return leg has its own input test point. a Each return leg also has its own plug-in attenuator location, allowing you to isolate ingress. b On the combined return output, an equalizer, an attenuator, and a directional coupler test point allow accurate setting of the combined signal. Return test signals are injected at any forward output test point. Diamond Line amplifiers enable quick, easy upgrading of older 550 and 750 MHz equipment using the existing housings. Amplifiers require a housing capable of continuously passing 15 amps of power. Directional coupler test points isolate the measured forward output signal from the effects of reflections in the cable. An interstage response equalizer (debumper) may be installed to compensate for system conditions. Automatic level and slope control (ALSC) models maintain forward levels despite fluctuations in cable attenuation. The input power range is 40 to 90 volts. A 90%-efficient power supply, integral to the RF module, minimizes the possibility that the system power supply will go into a foldback condition. A crowbar circuit is standard. Power directors and line-voltage test point are easily accessible. Amp a. Diamond Line 1 and 2 amplifiers, which combine return signals from multiple legs, use resistive return input test points to decrease insertion loss. b. As long as the previous amplifier s return output levels are set properly, you shouldn t need to use return input attenuators to make level adjustments. However, if there are no actives downstream of the amplifier, use these attenuators to adjust signal levels going into the return hybrid, for example, to make the signal levels from the return legs equal. (See Forward Input Attenuators, starting on page 108.) Introduction 7

For more on 9-NH housing model numbers, see page 51. 14 Diamond Line 1 Amplifier

Doc. 2244001, Rev. D Functional Description Amp Figure 5. Diamond Line 1 Functional Block Diagram The Diamond Line 1 amplifier has one low-level, high-performance RF output for trunk applications (main output) and two high-level outputs for distribution networks (secondary outputs). Each secondary output has its own post-amplifier hybrid; the main output is coupled from the interstage hybrid. For details on the forward RF signal flow, see page 15. For details on the return RF signal flow, see page 18. For a description of amplifier powering, see page 20. Forward RF Signal Flow In summary, forward RF signals enter the Diamond Line 1 amplifier module through the input port, J1, and are amplified by the pre-amplifier. The main output signals are amplified once more after the pre-amplifier before exiting through the main output (low-level) port, J2. The secondary-output signals are amplified twice more after the pre-amplifier before exiting through the two distribution (high-level) output ports, J3 and J4. The return RF signal flow is the same for all three of the Diamond Line 1 amplifier s return legs, from ports J2, J3, and J4 to port J1. Before Main & Secondary Paths Split Input Port (J1) The input port, J1, routes forward incoming signal to the amplifier. (This port also routes outgoing return signal to the main cable.) Diamond Line 1 Amplifier 15

Doc. 2244001, Rev. D Amplifiers are shipped with input attenuator and input equalizer positions empty; both plug-ins are required for operation. Input Test Point The input test point is a -20 db directional coupler. Accessible through a cut-out in the module cover, this test point allows verification of the forward signals at the forward input port (J1) without interrupting the amplifier s operation. (Return signal cannot be measured here.) Input Diplex Filter A diplex filter consists of a pair of filters, a high-pass and a low-pass, isolating forward and return bands. The high-pass filter passes forward signals but blocks return signals and AC. The low-pass filter passes return signals but blocks forward signals. Input Attenuator A plug-in attenuator reduces RF levels at the pre-amplifier s input to meet design specifications. Amplifiers are shipped with the input attenuator position empty. Select and install the appropriate value based on network design. Input Equalizer The plug-in equalizer compensates for the effects of cable preceding the amplifier module. Amplifiers are shipped with the input equalizer position empty. Select and install the appropriate value based on network design. Pre-Amplifier This pre-amplifier sets the amplifier s noise figure. Interstage Attenuator An interstage attenuator reduces overall amplifier gain. A zero attenuator or jumper is shipped in this slot for circuit continuity. ALSC Bode Equalizer (factory-installed) The ALSC Bode equalizer works with the ALSC Bode controller to maintain a constant RF output level, compensating for the effects of outside temperature changes on cable. Response Equalizer An EDB series response equalizer (debumper) flattens the forward response of cascaded amplifiers, compensating for system signature imperfections. A jumper is shipped in this slot for circuit continuity. Interstage Equalizer (factory-installed) This equalizer is factory-installed to optimize the amplifier s distortion characteristic and provide the desired main output slope at the specified bandwidth. Normally you will 16 Diamond Line 1 Amplifier

Doc. 2244001, Rev. D not change this plug-in. However, if you need to change the tilt of the amplifier s outputs from the factory-set value, see the procedure under Interstage & Distribution Equalizers on page 98. Main Output/Interstage Amplifier The RF from this hybrid goes to the main output port and to the two secondary post-amplifiers. ALSC Bode Controller (factory-installed) The automatic level and slope control (ALSC) Bode controller works with the ALSC Bode equalizer to maintain a constant RF output level, compensating for the effects of outside temperature changes on cable. A directional coupler taps a small portion of the main output power and converts it to a DC signal that controls the Bode equalizer. Amp The main output test point allows you to inject return test signals. Secondary Path (after it splits from main path) Main Path (after it splits from secondary path) Main Output Diplex Filter See Input Diplex Filter on page 16. Main Output Test Point The main output test point is a -20 db directional coupler, which isolates the measured forward signal from the effects of reflections in the cable. Accessible through a cut-out in the module cover, this test point lets you verify the forward signals at the main output port (J2) without interrupting the amplifier s operation. Main Output Port (J2) The main output port, J2, routes forward outgoing signal to the main cable. (This port also routes incoming return signal to the amplifier.) Distribution Equalizer (factory-installed) The series distribution equalizer provides additional slope to both secondary outputs. The interstage and distribution equalizers are factory-installed to set the tilt of the secondary output signals according to the customer order. A jumper, or zero equalizer, may be shipped in the distribution equalizer position for circuit continuity if no additional slope is needed. Normally you will not change this plug-in. However, if you need to change the tilt of the amplifier s outputs from the factory-set value, see the procedure under Interstage & Distribution Equalizers on page 98. Diamond Line 1 Amplifier 17

Doc. 2244001, Rev. D A secondary output test point allows allows you to inject return test signals. Return RF Signal Flow Secondary Paths (after they split from each other) The path to J3 and the path to J4 are identical. The following descriptions apply to either path. Secondary Output Attenuator This attenuator reduces signal levels at the secondary output port (J3 or J4). A zero attenuator or jumper is shipped in this slot for circuit continuity. Secondary Output Post-Amplifier A post-amplifier further amplifies signals, determining gain and distortion at the secondary port (J3 or J4). Secondary Output Diplex Filter See Input Diplex Filter on page 16. Secondary Output Test Point A secondary output test point is a -20 db directional coupler, which isolates the measured forward signal from the effects of reflections in the cable. Accessible through a cut-out in the module cover, this test point lets you verify the forward signals at the secondary output port (J3 or J4) without interrupting the amplifier s operation. Secondary Output Port (J3 or J4) A secondary output port routes forward outgoing signal to distribution cables. (This port also routes incoming return signal to the amplifier.) Before the Return Legs Combine Return Input Port (J2, J3, or J4) A return input port routes incoming return signal to the amplifier. (This port also routes forward outgoing signal to distribution cables.) Return Test Signal Injection Point (Output Test Point) Since the forward output test point allows access to the return band, you can inject return test signals here (although you can t measure return signal). Return Input Diplex Filter See Input Diplex Filter on page 16. Return Input Attenuator This plug-in attenuator is used primarily for ingress isolation. (See page 109.) Doc. 2244001, Rev. D Functional Description Figure 13. Diamond Line 2 Functional Block Diagram The Diamond Line 2 amplifier can have two equal, or three unequal, high-level RF distribution outputs. It uses two post-amplifier hybrids, one for the main output and one for the two secondary outputs. A plug-in output port selector lets you use one or both secondary outputs by using a plug-in jumper or directional coupler. For details on forward RF signal flow, see page 34. For details on return RF signal flow, see page 37. For a description of amplifier powering, see page 39. Forward RF Signal Flow Forward RF signals enter the Diamond Line 2 amplifier module through the input port, J1, and are amplified by the pre-amplifier. The main output signals are amplified twice more before exiting through the main output port, J2. The secondary-output signals are also amplified twice more before exiting through the two distribution (secondary) output ports, J3 and/or J4. The return RF signal flow is the same for all three return legs, from ports J2, J3, and/or J4 to port J1. Before Main & Secondary Paths Split Input Port (J1) The input port, J1, routes forward incoming signal to the amplifier. (This port also routes outgoing return signal to the main cable.) Input Test Point The input test point is a -20 db directional coupler. Accessible through a cut-out in the module cover, this test point lets you verify the forward signals at the forward input port (J1) 34 Diamond Line 2 Amplifier

Doc. 2244001, Rev. D without interrupting the amplifier s operation. Input Attenuator This plug-in attenuator reduces RF levels at the pre-amp input to meet design specifications. Amplifiers are shipped with the input attenuator position empty. Select and install the appropriate value based on network design. Input Equalizer This plug-in equalizer compensates for the effects of cable preceding the amplifier module. Amplifiers are shipped with the input equalizer position empty. Select and install the appropriate value based on network design. Pre-Amplifier This pre-amplifier sets the amplifier s noise figure. Interstage Attenuator The interstage attenuator reduces overall amplifier gain. A zero attenuator or jumper is shipped in this slot for circuit continuity. ALSC Bode Equalizer (factory-installed) The ALSC Bode equalizer works with the ALSC Bode controller to maintain a constant RF output level, compensating for the effects of temperature on cable. Response Equalizer An EDB series response equalizer (debumper) flattens the forward response of cascaded amplifiers, compensating for system signature imperfections. A jumper is shipped in this slot for circuit continuity. Interstage Equalizer (factory-installed) The interstage equalizer is factory-installed to optimize the distortion characteristic of the amplifier and provide the desired main output slope at the specified bandwidth. Normally you will not change this plug-in. However, if you need to change the tilt of the amplifier s outputs from the factory-set value, see the procedure under Interstage & Distribution Equalizers on page 98. Amp Diamond Line 2 Amplifier 35

Doc. 2244001, Rev. D Interstage Amplifier The RF from this hybrid goes to the two post-amplifiers. Distribution Equalizer (factory-installed) The distribution equalizer provides additional slope to all outputs. The interstage and distribution equalizers are factory-installed to set the tilt of the output signals according to the customer order. A zero equalizer may be shipped in the distribution equalizer position for circuit continuity if no additional slope is needed. Normally you will not change this plug-in. However, if you need to change the tilt of the amplifier s outputs from the factory-set value, see the procedure under Interstage & Distribution Equalizers on page 98. The main output test point allows you to inject return test signals. Main Path (after it splits from secondary path) Main Output Attenuator Accessible through a cut-out in the module cover, this attenuator reduces signal levels at the main output. A zero attenuator or jumper is shipped in this slot for circuit continuity. Main Output Post-Amplifier The RF from this hybrid goes to the main output port, J2. Main Output Diplex Filter See Input Diplex Filter on page 35. Main Output Port (J2) The main output port, J2, routes forward outgoing signal to a distribution cable. (This port also routes incoming return signal to the amplifier.) 36 Diamond Line 2 Amplifier

Doc. 2244001, Rev. D A secondary output test point allows you to inject return test signals. Secondary Path (after it splits from main path) Secondary Output Attenuator This attenuator reduces signal levels at the secondary output port (J3 or J4). A zero attenuator or jumper is shipped in this slot for circuit continuity. Secondary Output Post-Amplifier The RF from this hybrid goes to the secondary output port(s). Secondary Output Port Selector Accessible through a cut-out in the module cover, the output port selector directs signal to the secondary output port(s): J3 only, J4 only, or both J3 and J4. A jumper, or zero attenuator, is used when directing signal to only one port. When using both ports, this location accepts a directional coupler plug-in. Secondary Output Diplex Filter See Input Diplex Filter on page 35. Secondary Output Port (J3 or J4) A secondary output port routes forward outgoing signal to a distribution cable. (This port also routes incoming return signal to the amplifier.) Amp Return RF Signal Flow Before the Return Legs Combine Return Input Port (J2, J3, or J4) A return input port routes incoming return signal to the amplifier. (This port also routes forward outgoing signal to distribution cables.) Return Test Signal Injection Point (Output Test Point) Since the forward output test point allows access to the return band, you can inject return test signals here (although you can t measure return signal). This three-way combiner has equal (5 db) loss in each leg. After the Return Legs Combine Return Amplifier This hybrid, which amplifies the combined return signal, features an improved compression point and bit error rate (BER) for digital-loaded traffic over a discrete amplifier design. Return Output Equalizer Accessible through a cut-out in the module cover, this equalizer provides an output tilt at the return amplifier that will provide a flat input at the next return amplifier. Amplifiers are shipped with the return output equalizer position empty. Select and install the appropriate value based on network design. A return EDB plug-in may be installed instead of the equalizer to flatten circuitry response anomalies. Return Output Attenuator This attenuator reduces signal levels at the return output port (J1). Amplifiers are shipped with a zero return output attenuator or jumper. You may need to select and install the appropriate value based on network design. Return Output Test Point This -20 db directional coupler test point is used to measure the combined return signal as it will be sent to the return output port, J1. PILOT MADE IN U.S.A. HOUSING PAT PEND. Doc. 2244001, Rev. D Equipment Description Figure 17. 9-NH Housing, Closed View The 9-NH series housing holds any 6-GNA, 6-TNA, or Diamond Line series amplifier. The 9-NH housing may be mounted on a strand, in a pedestal, in a cabinet, on a wall. The 9-NH housing has one input port, one main output port, and, on most models, two secondary output ports. These cast-in extended ports use 1 GHz seizure mechanisms for pin-type connectors. Some models provide access through the lid to the amplifier s RF test points. Patented diagonal cooling fins promote heat dissipation in all mounting orientations. Models with a chromate-conversion finish offer protection in the harshest environments.
