EXPERIMENT STATION OF THE KANSAS STATE AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE, M A N H A T T A N. BULLETIN NO. 52 SEPTEMBER, 1895. BOTANICAL DEPARTMENT. A. S. HITCHCOCK, M. SC., Professor of Botany. J. B. S. NORTON, Assistant in Botany. SECOND REPORT ON KANSAS WEEDS PRELIMINARY CIRCULAR ON DISTRIBUTION. The Department of Botany has in preparation a bulletin upon the distribution, or range, in Kansas of the various kinds of weeds. In order to make this report as complete as possible it is desirable that we have specimens of the weeds from every county in the state. It is for this reason that the present preliminary circular has been issued, hoping that the readers in Kansas will make an effort to help us in gathering the necessary information. It is only through the united efforts of the farmers of the state that this information can be obtained. We have collected in fifty-six counties, but the state is large. Many counties are not represented in our collection, others by but a few specimens. It is proposed in the bulletin mentioned to give a description of each weed and the counties where it has been found. It is necessary that our lists should be based on specimens themselves. There is much confusion in the common names of plants. What is called Iron-weed in one locality may be very different from the Iron-weed of another locality. We ask, then, that every reader of this bulletin in Kansas, outside of Riley county, will send us a collection of the weeds of his locality. The direction, for sending will be given below. We

88 B OTANICAL D EPARTMENT. [BULLETIN 52 wish particularly to have collections from the following counties as they are scarcely represented in our herbarium: Allen, Anderson, Chatauqua, Cheyenne, Clark, Cloud, Coffey, Comanche, Cowley, Dickinson, Edwards, Elk, Franklin, Graham, Gray, Harper, Harvey, Jewell, Kearney, Leavenworth, Lyon, Marshall, Meade, Mitchell, Neosho, Norton, Osage, Phillips, Pratt, Rawlins, Sheridan, Smith, Thomas, Wilson, Woodson. We have only small collections from several other counties. DIRECTIONS FOR SENDING SPECIMENS. A small portion of each plant showing a few well developed leaves, and flowers or fruit if convenient, can be wrapped snugly in paper and sent by mail to the Botanical Department of the Experiment Station, Manhattan, Kansas. Each plant should have a number attached to it but no other writing. In a letter sent separately should be given all the information concerning each number. This information should include the name of the weed in common usage, the abundance, the kind of soil in which it occurs; notes on methods used in eradication of weeds in general, or of any kind in particular, whether successful or unsuccessful; the relative noxiousness and the amount of damage done to crops by different kinds of weeds. Upon the outside of the package the sender should in addition to the address, write his own name and address after the word from. The station will return the postage to any sending weeds in this way. The plants should not be put in a box, nor should they be sent by express. A blank is enclosed with this bulletin which can be used in making the desired report. We ask that at least the first ten in the list be placed in the order of their injuriousness, the worst weed being placed at the top. All contributors of specimens and notes will be credited in the final report. The following list includes only the common weeds and shows their distribution by counties so far as indicated by specimens in our possession. Many other plants become more or less weed-like in certain localities and will be included in the complete list. We shall be glad to receive any weed from any county from which we do not already have a specimen.
