DEAR PRIMARY 2/3 I very desperately need your help! I am a park ranger from your local park and I have a very big problem. Someone has given me this penguin to look after. I was very excited as I thought the people in Brechin would love to have him in the park. However he has turned out to be a very grumpy and bad tempered bird! I have tried very hard to look after him but it seems that nothing I try is to his liking! Someone in the park suggested that I send him to your class. They said you had read Penguin s Progress and have since become marvellous penguin experts! I enclose a letter, along with Pip (the very grumpy) Penguin. He speaks a very strange language, but luckily someone in the park managed to translate what he said and wrote it down for you. I very much hope you can help because I would like Pip to stay in the park but I cannot keep him happy! Yours in great hope and expectation Percival the Park Ranger 3

HELLO BOYS AND GIRLS, My name is Pip and I am a penguin. I seem to have ended up in a park with a very silly man who has no idea what I like or how to look after me, although I think he is trying to be kind. I believe you know all about penguins so perhaps you can give him some instructions to help him to look after me a bit better! The things I hate most are: l He gives me chocolate biscuits and grapes to eat: they taste very strange and make me feel sick! l He makes me come inside at night and sit by his fire to keep warm, he says. I am far too hot and I hate it! l I am very lonely. Penguins like to be with their friends and look after each other! l I feel like I am on the wrong side of the world and I am not sure why! It is a very strange feeling; do you know why I feel this way? l I haven t been swimming since I got here and I so love to swim and dive. It is making me very sad! Please, please, please help me!!!!!! I am a very desperate penguin and I think you may be my last hope of ever being happy again, Pip xxxx 4

Penguin Care DEAR PERCIVAL PARK RANGER, Poor Pip is not very happy. Here are a few things you can do to help him. 1. He doesn t like chocolate and grapes. Penguins like...... Pip does not like living in Brechin. This is because... 5. He is also sad because he has nowhere to......... I think the best thing to do to help Pip would be to... Yours sincerely P2/3 Andover Primary School 5

DEAR CHILDREN IN P2/3, Thank you so much for the wonderful advice you gave me about Pip. I made sure he was packed off back to Antarctica so he could be with all his friends and enjoy swimming, diving and tobogganing on the ice. It was a real comfort to hear that penguins look after each other; I know he will be happy and well cared for. I was quite embarrassed about giving Pip chocolate biscuits and grapes to eat, no wonder he was miserable! I had no idea penguins like fish and squid! I would like to ask you one last favour boys and girls. Your advice was so useful to me I wondered if you could help all the other park rangers too. Could you write some instructions for penguin care just in case another ranger is faced with the same problem I was. I will make sure your instructions are sent to all the other parks in Scotland. This will stop the same mistakes I made from happening again then no other poor penguin will end up roasting hot in a park ranger living room! Thank you so much for you kind help and I look forward to receiving you instructions. You really are penguin experts! Yours sincerely Percival the Park Ranger 6

DEAR PARENT/ CARER, We have really enjoyed reading Penguin s Progress in class. Ask me all about it! I can tell you about the story, the characters and parts of the book I enjoyed most. I can also tell you lots of interesting facts about penguins where they live, what frightens them, what happens to the eggs and then the chicks. Please ask me all the things you would like to know.
