TOWARDS THE LONELY MOUNTAIN 17TH 18TH SEPTEMBER 2016
THE BATTLE BEGINS You hear that, lads? We re on! Dain Ironfoot The dragon Smaug now lies dead, slain by the bravery and tenacity of Bard the Bowman. The underground kingdom of Erebor stands occupied but by a handful of dwarf-folk; Thorin Oakenshield, the heir to the throne and his Company have barricaded themselves in from the world, forsaking the attentions of all others in search for the Arkenstone amongst the gold horde of Thror, The Last King Under the Mountain. The Dragon-sickness has taken Thorin Oakenshield and he has changed beyond the recognition of his kin. Nearby in the ruined Dale, City of Men, the survivors of Smaug s fiery desolation of Lake-town take shelter, aided by the elves of Mirkwood. Both parties are owed riches by Thorin and they mean to leave with them by any means. But little do they know that two mighty armies of Orcs, Goblins, Trolls and worse, led by Azog the Defiler and his spawn, Bolg, move on The Lonely Mountain to destroy Thorin Oakenshield and take the gold for their own. The lines of war have been drawn and the Battle of the Five Armies has begun. Now is the time to take your place in the saga of The Hobbit at the time of the most climactic conflict of the age. The fate of Middle-earth hangs in the balance; march now with your ally into the fires of war. WELCOME Welcome indeed to the event pack for the The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies Doubles Campaign Weekend: Towards The Lonely Mountain. Ahead of you lies a fun weekend of epic battle for the fate of Erebor and indeed, Middle-earth. This event is not all about winning or losing, but rather about telling the story of the Battle of the Five Armies using your miniatures. We will use the results of your games to tell the story as the weekend goes along. Being as this is a Doubles Campaign weekend, you ll be playing alongside a gaming partner, the two of you marching out to create your destiny together. This event is designed for players of all ages and abilities, so it s perfect whether you re a veteran of a thousand wars or you re just taking your first steps in playing The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies It is important to say as well, that while this event tells the story of the Battle of the Five Armies which saw Men, Elves, Dwarves, Orcs and Great Eagles fight, any army from the strategy battle game is welcome to be used and play; both sides had allies after all. They all fit into the story somewhere!

Each team therefore uses two Forces. Army: describes the total combination of both Forces eg all the models which belong to a team. To play in this event, each team will need to prepare their models in this way: Each player may select a Force worth up to 500 points using the Choosing An Army guide on page 100 of the The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey rules manual. Thus every team of two players uses an Army of no more than 1000 points. Points cannot be split between players. Eg if James spends just 450 points, his team mate Jay cannot then spend 550 points. Each Force must contain at least 3 models. Both Forces must be Good or both Forces must be Evil. An Army cannot contain a mixture of Good and Evil models. All of the miniatures you bring (including all components) must have been produced by Games Workshop and be fully assembled, painted and based. For the sake of clarity for your opponents, and to avoid mid-game confusion, we also require that each model represents exactly what it is on your army list (including all weapons and equipment). Please note: We will ask you during registration if you have any unpainted or unbased models left to finish. If you do, let us know and we will tell you what needs to be done in order to make the models up to standard for the event. Then we will do our best to give you the time and space to get your models finished. If you aren t sure what you need to do, give us a call on 0115 900 4994 during normal office hours and we will happily talk you through what we look for. Alternatively, feel free to email us at the address given at the end of this pack. You will need to bring a copy of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey rules manual, as well as all additional source books you need for your army to play in this event. Any of you are welcome at any time! Bilbo Baggins It s important to note, that while this weekend is themed around The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, you may indeed use models and rules from the entire The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game ranges, including all current and classic miniatures.
USING THE RIGHT MODELS Impressive. What else do you claim to be? - Smaug We understand that there are a number of miniatures not currently available in The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies and The Lord of the Rings ranges. We do insist, that where a model is still available, you use the correct model, for the sake of clarity to your opponents. If a model is no longer available, it is perfectly acceptable to use a suitable conversion. All we ask is that it is 100% obvious to your opponent as to what it represents. If you are unsure as to whether it is obvious, please do email us and we will put your mind at ease! REGISTRATION I m looking for someone to share in an adventure. - Gandalf the Grey When you arrive at Warhammer World on Saturday morning, your team will need to register with the Events Team at the front of the gaming hall. All we will need is your name and a visible copy of your Ticketbud ticket email, whether it is printed out or displayed on a phone or tablet. We will give you a record card and a name badge each keep hold of these over the weekend. It s also a great chance to ask us any questions you might have about the weekend; we re happy to have a chat about anything you may need to know. You don t need to hand an army list to us, but make sure you have one ready to show your opponents before each game. FACTIONS Will you follow me...one last time? - Thorin Oakenshield At registration, we will ask your team to join one of two factions. Will you join The Alliance of Free Peoples or the Legions of Darkness? Over the course of the weekend, you will face teams from the opposing faction in a bid to win the Battle of Five Armies, and only one faction can emerge victorious. Which faction you serve is entirely up to you, but be warned... if you do not arrive precisely when you mean to (e.g. last...!), then we may ask you to join a certain faction to make the numbers equal. Note: It s acceptable (and may be unavoidable) to have teams using Good models join the Legions of Darkness or teams using Evil models join the Alliance of Free Peoples. GAMES I will have war! - Thorin Oakenshield At the heart of your Campaign experience is playing 5 games of The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies. Your opponents will be from the opposing faction and randomly selected by the Events Team, with games lasting up to two hours. Each game is set in a different region around The Lonely Mountain, with the climactic battles at the Gates of Erebor and Ravenhill ending the campaign. In each game, you will play the scenario as detailed below: GAME 1: THE SHORES OF THE LONG LAKE As the survivors of Lake-town begin their perilous journey to Dale, City of Men, scouts report sporadic warbands of Orcs, evil Men and other forces lying low in the wilderness. Their allies rally to their cause and soon, battle is joined, giving time for the beleaguered Lake-town folk to make their escape. The Alliance of Free Peoples must hold off the Legions of Darkness for as long as possible... Scenario: Hold Ground! (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey rules manual pg 106) GAME 2: THE BANK OF THE RUNNING RIVER As the Elven army of Thranduil, King of Mirkwood moves along the banks of the Running River towards Dale, a badly beaten dispatch rider returns to the column, close to death and speaking of foul monsters lying over the ridge. Thranduil quickly sends messages to nearby allies and his warriors prepare to repel the attackers. If he can slip past the attackers and make his way to Dale, City of Men without losing any of his warriors, all would be the better... Scenario: Reconnoitre (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey rules manual pg 108) GAME 3: THE GATES OF EREBOR The Elves of Mirkwood and the Dwarves of the Iron Hills are locked in battle outside the mighty gates of Erebor after typically cold negotiations fell apart. But as they fight, a mighty warhorn sounds from the distance. Elves, Men and Dwarves stop in their tracks and look to the East, as huge Were-worms burst forth into the valley, an army of Orcs and mercenaries swarming from the giant burrow-holes. The former enemies now turn to face the common foe, to defend Erebor from this new threat. Scenario: To the Death! (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey rules manual pg 104) GAME 4: THE OUTSKIRTS OF DALE, CITY OF MEN As the mighty battle rages in the valley leading to Erebor, Bolg, the spawn of Azog The Defiler leads a legion of Orcs and other foul denizens from Gundabad to attack the Allies from the rear and force them to fight on two fronts. But Gandalf the Grey realises in time and readies the armies of Men, Elves and Dwarfs to split their forces and fight this new foe on the outskirts of Dale, City of Men. This field must be held at all costs! Scenario: Domination (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey rules manual pg 105) GAME 5: THE FOOT OF RAVENHILL With the battle almost lost, Thorin Oakenshield leads a small band in a desperate attack on Ravenhill to kill Azog, thus severing the head of the Orc attack. Below him, the battle rages on intensely, but heroes from both sides are inspired by the skirmish above and want nothing more than to prove they are equal in valour on this terrible day. Scenario: Lords of Battle (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey rules manual pg 107)
THE FLAMES OF WAR Death is upon you! The flames of war are upon you! - Narzug The influence of The Necromancer of Dol Guldur is never far away... but the light of the Valar, wielded by those sent to stop him is equally powerful. Throughout the weekend, at random intervals, we will make rolls on the Flames of War table. The results will either affect the players in the Alliance of the Free Peoples faction, or those in the Legion of Darkness faction, and every player in the faction will benefit. Results may include magical occurrences, minor events, freak weather conditions, heroic interventions and many more. The effects will be minor in nature, but will really add something unique to your games. SCORING And if it loses... what then? - Gollum Throughout your games, you will earn Victory Points as part of the individual scenarios. We will ask you to keep track of these Victory Points throughout the games and at the end of each one, hand in a results slip (provided as part of your record card) to the Events Team. The Victory Points scored by each team will be added to the total scored by their faction in each round, which will prove crucial to the outcome of the Campaign. WINNING THE CAMPAIGN Victory after all, I suppose... Bilbo Baggins As you may have gathered from the Games section earlier, each of the 5 games you will play over the weekend is set on a different part of the great battlefield laid out in front of The Lonely Mountain. In each game, you will be fighting to decide which faction holds each region; whichever faction collectively scores the most number of Victory Points in each round will be the victor in that region. At the end of the weekend, the faction which holds the most regions on the great battlefield will be declared the victors. Of course, we won t actually tell you which faction won each region until the very end of the event... we want to keep that a surprise after all! As such, this weekend, you are fighting solely for the good of your faction. You will stand or fall together as one; remember this throughout the event.
FAVOURITE GAME VOTES I have always found Thorin to be the more reasonable of the two. - Gandalf the Grey At the end of the event, both players will get to vote for the team who gave you the most enjoyable game over the weekend. Perhaps their army was gorgeous, or they taught you a new tactic? Perhaps they were just a thoroughly sporting opponent. For whatever the reason, please show your appreciation for that team by voting for them. To show how highly we value those players who go out of their way to ensure others around them have a good time, we will awarding prizes to the teams from both factions who score the most Favourite Game votes. If there is a tie for this, we will use the Victory Points scored by those teams as a second sorter. Legends gives you the chance to show off your skills with single models rather than with whole armies. Simply enter a model in the relevant category when entries are being taken (check the schedule above). Both players from one team can enter individually. Once all the entries are in, we ask everyone to vote for their favourites. Whoever gains the most votes in each category will be declared the winner! (Please note - these models must be from the army you are using over the weekend). Hero of Legend: For all models on foot or mounted on horse/ Warg/camel/ similar sized mount. Beast of Legend: For all monsters such as Trolls, Mumakil, Eagles, Ents. This category is also for heroes mounted on a monster eg Ringwraith on Fellbeast. Engine of Legend: All warmachines, artillery, chariots etc. This category also covers any heroes on war machine such as Radagast the Brown on his sleigh. Company of Legend: For any single warband of between 3-8 miniatures. THE BEST ARMY COMPETITION In order to acknowledge the outstanding efforts that some teams go to in order to produce stunning armies, we have the Best Army competition. The events team will nominate armies for everyone to vote on. The team who receives the most number of votes will win the Best Army award. AWARDS You have but one question to answer: How shall this day end? - Gandalf the Grey At the end of all things, we will take the time to recognise the achievements of the players and teams who have performed most valiantly. We will be awarding these prizes: Legends Painting Competition Winners Best Army Nominations for the players nominated for the Best Army Competition. Best Army Award for the team who earns the most votes for Best Army. The Marshals of Gundabad for the Team on the Legions of Darkness faction who scored the most Favourite Game Votes. The Heroes of Ravenhill for the team from the Alliance of the Free Peoples faction who scores the most Favourite Game Votes.. The Champions of Erebor to every member of the faction which secured the most regions overall.
