UNASSIGNED CREELS: THIRD GENERATION UNASSIGNED: David Creel / Hannah Ball 1. David CREEL, b. Abt 1800 in VA, d. in Prince William Co. (?) VA, occupation 1850 Agent (Farm). The parentage of David is inconclusive. It seems likely he is a son of David and a grandson of William and Elizabeth. No other possibilities seem valid. 1850 Prince William; census page 109, family 186 [David listed as an agent. Nancy at home]. 1860 Fauquier, Thoroughfare; census page 62, family 440 [nearby is Harrison and Elizabeth Creel, family 446]. Married 1 Jan 1820 in Fauquier Co. VA, (see note 1) Hannah BALL, also known as "Ann", b. Abt 1805 in Fauquier Co. VA, (daughter of William BALL Jr. and Margery CREEL) d. in Prince William Co. (?) VA. 2. i William CREEL b. Abt 1823. ii Nancy CREEL, b. Abt 1830 in Prince William Co. (?) VA. Second Generation 2. William CREEL, b. Abt 1823 in Prince William Co. (?) VA, occupation Laborer (1850), occupation Farmer (1860, 1870). 1850 Fauquier, Turner's District; census page 290, family 343. 1860 Fauquier, The Plains; census page 53, family 389. 1870 Fauquier, Scott District; census page 616, family 296 [son Gustavus nearby]. Married 1 Mar 1843 in Fauquier Co. VA, (see note 2) Elizabeth GRIFFITH, b. Abt 1824 in Fauquier Co. VA, (daughter of Evan "Ivan" GRIFFITH and Martha "Patsy" BALL). i Barnett G. CREEL, b. CREEL, also known as "Willie", b. Abt 1849 in VA, (daughter of Harrison CREEL and Mary Jane (NOLSH)). Alwilda's name has also been recorded as "Alwinda". ii Gustavus CREEL, b. Abt 1846 in Fauquier Co. VA, occupation Farmer (1870). 1870 Fauquier, Scott District; census page 619, family 335 [parents nearby]. Married Bef 1850, Martha (UNKNOWN), b. UNASSIGNED: Thomas Creel / Lucretia Nalls 1. Thomas CREEL, b. Abt 1802 in Fauquier Co. VA, d. Bef 1860 in Fauquier Co. VA, (see note 1) occupation Collier (1850). The 1850 census shows a Mary Creel, age 89, living with Thomas and his family. Her identity is unknown, perhaps his mother. By 1860, Thomas was deceased. David and John were at home and Martha Jane was living with the John Griffith family nearby. 1850 Fauquier, Turner's District; census page 289, family 324 [living next door is George and Elizabeth, family 325]. 1860 Fauquier, The Plains; census page 53, family 385 [Thomas deceased]. 1870 Fauquier, Scott District; census page 612, family 249 [ the three children and Lucretia present]. Research Notes: While the parentage of this Thomas Creel is unclear, it seems a possibility he might be the son of David and Mary is his mother. Married 23 Jan 1834 in Fauquier Co. VA, (see note 2) Lucretia NALLS, b. Abt 1799 in VA. i David CREEL, b. Abt 1835 in Fauquier Co. VA, occupation Laborer (1850). ii Martha Jane "Patsy" CREEL, also known as "Betsy Jane", b. Abt 1842 in Fauquier Co. VA. iii John CREEL, b. Abt 1845 in Fauquier Co. VA. Note 1 Not present for the 1860 census. Note 2 James Flinn was marriage bondsman. 3

UNASSIGNED: Harrison Creel / Elizabeth Bruin 1. Harrison CREEL, b. Abt 1815 in VA, d. Bef 1891 in Fauquier Co. VA, (see note 1) occupation Carpenter (1850, 1860, 1870). This Harrison Creel's occupation as a carpenter is unique among these Creels. The Bruin family connection remains to be researched. Elizabeth Bruin may have been a cousin to Sarepta Bruin who married William Creel. Her death record informant is listed as son James H. Creel. This likely is Joseph H. Creel. 1850 Fauquier, Turner's District; census page 302, family 501 [Living next to the James T. Ford family (Elizabeth's sister Mary Ann)]. 1860 Fauquier, Thoroughfare; census page 62, family 446 [Living near David and Hannah Creel]. 1870 Fauquier, Scott's District; census page 620, family 337. Research Notes: The fact that Harrison was a carpenter gives rise to his possibly having been apprenticed in that field as a result of his father's premature death. Married 18 Dec 1839 in Fauquier Co. VA, (see note 2) Elizabeth BRUIN, b. Abt 1815 in Fauquier Co. VA, (see note 3) (daughter of Elias BRUIN and Ann (UNKNOWN)) d. 30 Jun 1891 in Nr. Upperville, Fauquier Co. VA, (see note 4). i Virginia A. CREEL, b. Abt 1840 in VA. ii Rosaline CREEL, b. Abt 1842 in VA. iii Josephine CREEL, b. Abt 1844 in VA. iv Angeline CREEL, b. Abt 1846 in VA. v Sarah F. CREEL, b. Abt 1849 in VA. vi Benjamin Wilson CREEL, b. 1852 in VA, d. Jul 1853 in Fauquier Co. VA, (see note 5). vii Joseph H. CREEL, b. Abt 1854 in Fauquier Co. VA, occupation Laborer (1870). viii John S. CREEL, b. Abt 1857 in Fauquier Co. VA. Note 1 Elizabeth was a widow at the time of her passing. Note 2 Bondsman: daughter of Elias. Note 3 Death record gives her year of birth as 1825 which does not agree with census information. Note 4 Died from throat cancer. Informant was son James H. Creel. Note 5 Died from dysentery at age 11 months. Informant was the father. 4

UNASSIGNED: Harrison Creel / Mary Jane (NOLSH) 1. Harrison CREEL, b. 9 Feb 1823 in VA, d. 21 Jul 1892 in Fauquier Co. VA, buried in Marshall Cem. Fauquier Co. VA, occupation Farmer (1850, 1870), occupation Overseer (1860). Mary Jane's surname has not been confirmed and it is absent in local records. Pondrum's research speculated her correct name to be "Welsh". The marriage is not listed in the index, but apparently is recorded in the register. Joseph Ball was her bondsman which gives some credibility to the maiden name being Welsh, or Walsh. This Harrison Creel seems closely tied to the William Creel who married Frances Lewis. This Harrison and William appear as the best fit as sons of Harrison and Elizabeth, yet nothing has been found to collaborate this. In 1850 living with Harrison and Mary are Roxey B. Moller, age 18, and Anne E. Moller, age 23. It is not clear if they are relatives. 1850 Fauquier, Turner's District; census page 289, family 328 [living next door to William and Frances Creel]. 1860 Fauquier, Middleburg; census page 56, family 408. 1870 Fauquier, Scott Twp. census page 612, family 240 [Barnett and Alwilda are living next door]. Pondrum, Lewis; "Ball Families of Fauquier County, Virginia"; LDS film 1421914 [Creel, Chart 108]. Married 28 Dec 1846 in Fauquier Co. VA, (see note 1) Mary Jane (NOLSH), b. Abt 1822 in VA. 2. i Alwilda B. CREEL b. Abt 1849. ii Lyland L. CREEL, b. Abt 1851 in VA. iii Morrison CREEL, b. Abt 1852 in VA. iv Cornelius CREEL, b. Abt 1855 in VA. v Martin Luther CREEL, b. Abt 1857 in VA. vi Elizabeth J. CREEL, also known as "Lizzie", b. Abt 1859 in VA. Second Generation 2. Alwilda B. CREEL, also known as "Willie", b. Abt 1849 in VA. Alwilda's name has also been recorded as "Alwinda". She married Barnett G. CREEL, b. Abt 1845 in Fauquier Co. VA, (son of William CREEL and Elizabeth GRIFFITH) occupation Farmer (1870). 1870 Fauquier, Scott District; census page 612, family 239 [living next to Harrison and Mary Creel]. i ii Roberta CREEL, b. Abt 1870 in VA. Unnamed CREEL, b. 10 Jul 1881 in Fauquier Co. VA, d. 11 Jul 1881 in Fauquier Co. VA. Note 1 Joseph Ball, bondsman. 5

UNASSIGNED: William Creel / Frances Lewis 1. William CREEL, b. Abt 1814 in VA, occupation Farmer (1850, 1860, 1870). Nancy Colbert, age 17, is found living with William and Frances in 1850. John W. Creel, age 29, is living with the family in 1860. His identity is unknown. In 1870 only Margaret is present and is unmarried. It may be that son William, informant to his mother's death, is actually John W. Creel who was present for the census in 1860 and his age mistakenly transcribed as 29 instead of 19. 1850 Fauquier, Turner's District; census page 289, family 327 [living next to Harrison and Mary Creel]. 1860 Fauquier, Middleburg; census page 55, family 296 [living among Lunsfords and Flynns; Harrison is nearby]. 1870 Fauquier, Scott Twp.; census page 612, family 243 [Harrison and Frances are family 240]. As this is Frances' second marriage, it seems likely that William may too have been previously married. This gives rise to the possibility son William was from an earlier marriage. Married 20 Dec 1841 in Fauquier Co. VA, (see note 1) Frances LEWIS, b. Abt 1811 in Fauquier Co. VA, (daughter of Charles LEWIS and Elizabeth (UNKNOWN)) d. 13 Oct 1883 in Nr. Landmark, Fauquier Co. VA, (see note 2). i ii iii Elizabeth CREEL, b. Abt 1843 in VA. Margaret CREEL, b. Abt 1845 in VA. William CREEL. William was the informant to his mother's death record. This may be the John W. Creel, age 29, living with William and Frances in 1860. If true, his age should have been about 19 years. It is also possible this William may have been from an earlier marriage. Note 1 Bride is the widow of William Kinsel. Note 2 Died of old age. Informant was William Creel, son. 6

UNASSIGNED: William Creel / Sarepta Bruin 1. William CREEL, b. Abt 1800 in VA, (see note 1) d. Bef 1842 in Fauquier Co. VA, (see note 2). Little is known of this William Creel other than he was deceased before 1842. 1850 Fauquier, Turner's District; census page 289, family 335 [Sarepth living with the John Griffith family, next to Benjamin Lunsford]. 1860 Fauquier, The Plains; census page 59, family 432 [Arthur Sullivan, age 49, living with Sarepta]. Married 22 Nov 1819 in Fauquier Co. VA, (see note 3) Sarepta BRUIN, b. Abt 1800 in VA, (daughter of John BRUIN). 2. i Jane CREEL b. Abt 1825. 3. ii Harriet CREEL. 2. Jane CREEL, b. Abt 1825 in VA. Second Generation Married 26 Dec 1842 in Fauquier Co. VA, (see note 4) John GRIFFITH, b. Abt 1818 in VA. 1850 Fauquier, Turner's District; census page 290A, family 350. [Jane's mother is living with the family]. 1860 Fauquier, The Plains; census page 53 [Martha Jane Creel, daughter of Thomas and Lucretia, living with family]. i ii iii iv Joseph GRIFFITH, b. Abt 1844 in Fauquier Co. VA. Juliet GRIFFITH, b. Abt 1845 in Fauquier Co. VA. Ivan GRIFFITH, b. Abt 1847 in Fauquier Co. VA. Sarepta GRIFFITH, b. Abt 1849 in Fauquier Co. VA. 3. Harriet CREEL. Married 27 Nov 1843 in Fauquier Co. VA, (see note 5) William GRIFFITH. i Sereptia GRIFFITH, b. 1859 in Fauquier Co. VA, d. 1888, buried in Middleburg Baptist Church. Married 20 Dec 1885 in Fauquier Co. VA, Emmit N. SUTPHIN, b. 1859 in Fauquier Co. VA, (see note 6) (son of Richard L. SUTPHIN and Margaret "Mary" J. BALL) d. 1908, buried in Middleburg Baptist Church, occupation Laborer (1885). Note 1 Birth year is an estimate based upon his wife's age in 1850. William died before this census. Note 2 Year of death deduced from daughter Jane's guardianship record. Note 3 Bondsman: Daughter of John Note 4 John Griffith became Jane's guardian on the day of their marriage. Jane was listed as the daughter of William, deceased. Note 5 Harriet listed as the daughter of William. Witness to the marriage was John Griffith. Harriet apparently was in her majority at the time of the wedding. Note 6 The year of birth is taken from the grave marker. The Sutphin/Griffith marriage record gives Emmit's year of birth as 1864 whereas the Sutphin/Kilby marriage record gives Emmit's year of birth as 1862. 7

UNASSIGNED: John Creel / Frances Kilby 1 John CREEL b. 1760-1770 Culpeper Co. VA d. 27 Oct 1846 Culpeper Co. VA Married 31 Dec 1811 in Culpeper Co. VA, Frances KILBY, b. Abt 1773 in VA d. 21 Jul 1854 in Culpeper Co. VA John Creel, variously spelled Creele and Creal, served during the Revolution with the 12th Virginia Regiment of the Continental Line. His pension application of 13 Aug 1832 states that he was born in, lived in, and enlisted from Culpeper County. His widow, Frances, at age 80, applied for a pension 20 Apr 1853. Re; file W-534. The 1830 Culpeper census for John Creale, page 137, shows John b. 1760-1770, Frances b. 1770-1780, and a male b. 1815-1820. He is the only John Creal listed in this census. The 1820 census does not show John and Frances with a son, so it is assumed John and Frances were childless. There were however two John Creals in Culpeper in 1820, both over age 45, as were their wives, and both childless. One of these John Creals (page 68) had 2 engaged in agriculture while the other (page 67) had 5 in agriculture. Both owned a single slave. The 1810 Culpeper census shows John Creal age 26-45 and a wife over 45. No children but 4 engaged in agriculture. From this it appears John was previously married, but was childless. It would also appear that John served at a very young age during the war. In Culpeper in 1830, census page 93, there is a D. Creel, b. 1790-1800, married, with a son and 2 daughters, all under 10 years of age, and a wife, b. 1800-1810. The same census on page 141 shows a Daniel Creel, b. 1780-1790, with four sons, 3 daughters, and a wife. It is not clear what relationships these Creels are to one another. They do not however appear to connect directly to the Creels of Leeds Manor in Fauquier. 1850 Culpeper; census page 215, family 9 [Frances Creel, 79, alone].
