Replacing a La Z Time Mechanism Side Subassembly Tools Required: Slotted Screwdriver Power Driver 8" Driver Extension Ruler Note: Extension springs are not typically used on non-chaise standard width styles, but can be added as a service solution for additional legrest support when needed. Remove Extension T 30 Torx Bit T 25 Torx Bit Torque Wrench Socket Wrench Please read through all instructions prior to beginning the repair. CAUTION Risk of injury: Always wear safety goggles or glasses when completing repairs. 2. Note: Illustrations show the style 480 and the left side of the left mechanism being replaced. Remove the Back(s): 1. Pull the lower outside back cover to loosen the back upholstery from the fastening tape on the bottom side of the rear seat rail. Close the legrest. Using the T 30 bit, remove the four ½" truss head screws securing the reclining unit to the bottom rails. If repairing a reclining chair, remove the bottom rails. If repairing a motion sofa or motion modular unit, carefully move the reclining unit to be repaired away from the other units. Remove (4) ½" Screws 2. Unlock the back brackets using a slotted screwdriver, remove the upholstered back and set the back aside. If needed, refer to Replacing a Back work instruction for back removal and installation instructions. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for all backs. 3. Carefully turn the unit upside down to rest on the top of the arms. 3. Remove (4) ¾" Screws Remove the Mechanism Assembly: 1. Extend the legrest. Using the T 25 bit, remove the four ¾" pan head screws attaching the upholstered legrest to the mechanism. Set the screws and legrest aside. If repairing a wide style, or chaise style, or any style using a center extension spring, extend the legrest, unhook the extension spring and set it aside. Refer to image at top right. 1 of 7

4. If repairing a non chaise style, use the T 25 bit to remove the two ¾" pan head screws attaching the upholstered mid ottoman to the mechanism. Set the screws and mid-ottoman aside. Unhook Cable Return Remove (2) ¾" Screws 8. 5. Remove the black nylon trip lever from the mechanism. Rotate the trip lever until the tab aligns with the slot in the side rail, pull it out away from the mechanism and set the assembly aside. Unhook the extension spring on the side of the mechanism and set aside. Remove Trip Lever Unhook Extension Disconnect the cable end of the release subassembly from the mechanism side rail by sliding the end off the mount. 9. Using the T 25 bit, remove the four 1¼" pan head screws securing the mechanism to the seat side rails. The mechanism is now detached from the body assembly. Left Sid e 6. Remove (4) 1¼" Screws 7. Unhook the cable return spring from the mechanism side rail. Refer to image at top right. 2 of 7

10. If repairing a non chaise style, remove the mid ottoman bracket from the side of the mechanism that you are replacing. Use the T 25 bit to remove the 3/8" truss head screw securing the bracket to the mechanism. Set the screw and bracket aside. Remove both brackets if replacing both mechanism side subassemblies. 2. Extend the legrest. 3. Using a socket wrench and a T-30 bit, remove the ½" truss head screw securing the front stabilizer rail to the side mechanism. Set the screw aside. Remove 3/8" Screw and Ottoman Bracket Remove ½" Screw 4. 11. Using a socket wrench and a T 30 bit, remove the ½" truss head screw securing the rear stabilizer rail to the side mechanism. Set the screw aside. Close the legrest. Carefully lift the mechanism away from the upholstered body and place it right side up on a work bench or table. Remove ½" Screw 5. Separate the stabilizer rails from the mechanism side subassembly. With the exception of the drive rod, the side is now detached from the mechanism. 6. Carefully pull the side subassembly out and away from the drive rod and discard. Refer to image on the following page. Install the New Side Subassembly: 1. Remove the hairpin clip from the drive rod on the side being replaced. Remove Hairpin Clip 3 of 7

Insert Hairpin Clip Pull Away 7. Set the new side subassembly in position. Make sure both legrests are closed so the orientation of both sides match. 8. Line the plastic bushing on the side subassembly up to the drive rod and push in place until the hairpin clip holes are closely aligned. 11. Align the New Side to the Drive Rod and Push in Place Attach Rear Rail in Middle Hole 12. 9. Attach the rear stabilizer rail to the new side subassembly using the socket wrench with a T 30 bit and a ½" truss head screw. Use the middle hole in the rear stabilizer rail for this connection. Go slow, keeping the screw straight to ensure proper threading and not strip the head. Torque fastener to 4½ 5 ft lbs. Move the stabilizer rails into position around the front and rear motion arms. Front Motion Arm Extend the legrest. Attach the front stabilizer rail to the new side subassembly using the socket wrench and T 30 bit and a ½" truss head screw. Use the top hole in the front stabilizer rail for this connection. Make sure the rail is completely flush to the motion arm before making this connection. Go slow, keeping the screw straight to ensure proper threading and not strip the head. Torque fastener to 4½ 5 ft lbs. Close the legrest. Rear Motion Arm 10. Align the hole in the drive rod to the hole in the plastic bushing on the new side subassembly. Insert the hairpin clip to secure the drive rod connection. Refer to image at top right. 4 of 7 Attach Front Rail in Top Hole

13. Repeat steps 1 through 12 if replacing both mechanism side subassemblies. Replace the Mechanism Assembly: Tighten Rear Wing Nuts Completely 1. Align the mechanism to the body assembly. 2. 14. Check the rear wing nuts to make sure they are completely tightened. Tighten wing nuts if loose. 15. Check the front wing nuts to make sure they are in the same setting on both sides and are not completely tightened or loosened. The standard setting is 7/16" from the wing nut to the lip of the slide pivot rivet as shown below. Note: The wing nuts can be adjusted to the Using the T 25 bit, attach the mechanism to the seat side rails using four 1¼" pan head screws. Install the two front screws first, followed by the two back screws. Tighten screws as required without stripping the wood or breaking the fasteners. Attach Mechanism to Seat 3. Extend the legrest. Connect the extension spring to the side of the mechanism starting with the front connection. Make sure to orient the spring so that the open end of front hook faces toward the seat as shown below. Front /16" Wing Nuts 7 consumer s preferred setting, but should not be completely tightened or loosened and both sides should be set to the same measurement. 16. Open End Faces Toward Seat Check the adjustable legrest cams to make sure they are in the same setting on both sides. The FRONT 4. If repairing a non chaise style, attach the mid ottoman bracket. Line the mid ottoman bracket up with the legrest linkage and rotate it clockwise, toward the front of the recliner, until it stops and the holes are aligned. Use the T 25 bit and a 3/8" truss head screw to secure the connection. Torque fastener to 4½ 5 ft-lbs. Repeat for other side if both brackets were removed. Refer to image on following page. Attach Mid Ottoman Bracket(s) Insert Trip Lever and Rotate Forward 5. If repairing a non chaise style, use the T 25 bit and two ¾" pan head screws to attach the upholstered mid ottoman to the mechanism. Torque fasteners to 3 3½ ft-lbs. Using the T 25 bit and four ¾" pan head screws, attach the upholstered legrest to the mechanism. Torque fasteners to 3 3½ ft-lbs. Hook the cable return spring to the mechanism side rail. Attach Cable Return 9. Attach Upholstered Mid Ottoman 6. 8. Connect the cable end of the release subassembly to the mechanism side rail. Orient the cable so the cable conduit faces away from the seat and slide the end over the mount until seated. Cable Conduit Faces Away From the Seat Attach Upholstered Legrest 7. Insert the black nylon trip lever into the mechanism side rail and rotate it toward the front of the recliner to lock it in place. Refer to image at top right. 6 of 7

10. Close the legrest. 11. If repairing a motion sofa or motion modular unit, carefully move the reclining unit into position next to the other unit(s). Connect Extension Front Bottom Rail Open End Faces Up Toward Seat 14. Close the legrest and return unit to its upright position. Install the Back(s): 12. Secure the reclining unit to the bottom rails using a T 30 driver and four ½" truss head screws. Start and snug up the two inside screws first, followed by the two outside screws. Do not completely tighten the screws until all four are installed. Once installed, torque these screws to 4½ 5 ft-lbs. Attach Mechanism to Bottom Rails WARNING Risk of injury: Do not operate the unit until the back is installed and locked. 1. Lay the back across the arm(s) of the body. Lift the back at a slight angle and align the brackets on the back with the mechanism brackets in the body. 2. Lower the back onto the body, making sure the back and mechanism brackets are completely engaged. To do this, while standing behind the unit, twist the back from side to side. If one or both sides move out of position the brackets are not engaged; remove the back and reinstall. Refer to Replacing a Back work instruction for details if needed. 13. If repairing a style that uses the center extension spring, extend the legrest and connect the spring. Make sure to orient this spring with the open end of the front hook facing toward the seat. Refer to image at top right. 3. After you verify that both sets of brackets are completely engaged, lock the back brackets using a slotted screwdriver to push down the locking levers. 4. Smooth the outside back cover over the back, pulling the cover tight. Firmly press the fastening tape on the back cover to the fastening tape on the bottom edge of the rear seat rail. 5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 until all backs are installed. 6. Verify the mechanism operation and make adjustments as needed.
