Partnership between Universities and Practitioners University of Victoria and the BC Institute for Co-operative Studies (BCICS) and other universities across Canada Canadian Community Development Network (CCEDNet)

CSEHub/CCÉS Seeks to answer how the approaches of the Social Economy can be understood and effectively applied so community organizations, civil society, community developers and researchers can collaborate to empower groups and communities to meet their social and economic needs?

Vision To: build collaboration between researchers and practitioners to better understand and encourage initiatives at the local, provincial and national levels so that the Social Economy and its related approaches will be more widely understood and applied in Canada.

Regional Research Centers Atlantic Québec Southern Ontario Prairies and Northern Ontario BC/Alberta North

Funded by The Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council is providing funding over five years for the Hub and the regional nodes. The funding is part of the 2004 budget announcement in support of the social economy. Other government agencies are also providing partnership funding such as Social Development Canada. The universities and their community partners are also providing funds and in kind donations to the projects.

Key Research Areas Mapping or drawing a portrait of the Social Economy (who, how and what is the extent of the economic and social contribution) What tools are needed to facilitate the contribution of organizations participating in the social economy? financial tools such as access to capital/loans, legislative tools such as governance and tax regulations.

Key research areas continued What is the role of Social Economy organizations in the social and economic development of local communities? Development of evaluative tools so that practitioners can better measure outcomes.

Key areas of involvement for CSEHub/CCÉS Facilitating research and learning opportunities for researchers, faculty and students at universities. Working with CCEDNet, le Chantier, CCA, CCC and others to inform public policy. Providing practitioners with the research needed to advance their work.

Social Economy Learning Network Purpose to provide access to practitioners and researchers to research documents, databases and other Canadian and International resources. To foster dialogue through website, telelearning and face to face discussions on the Social Economy.
