Love is like a rose. It opens its petals slowly and reaches the pinnacle of its beauty as time progresses. Love is eternal. We come from love and are made of it. But in this lifetime love is not always obvious, it can be elusive. We look for it everywhere except within. The rose does not need anyone to be love, to inspire love. The rose just is. It fully accepts itself as a rose and is therefore magnificent. And so must we fully accept and embrace ourselves to experience the essence of love. I PAINT WHAT I FEEL, AND THEREFORE MY PAINTINGS ARE A PART OF MYSELF. Born in Russia at the height of the Cold War, Anna grew up in a world of strict rules, longing for colour, glamour and freedom of expression. Her father was an officer in the KGB and had pledged himself and his family to the austere lifestyle of a dedicated communist, but her mother was cut from a different cloth. Chic and sophisticated, this stylish subversive cultivated an elegant personal appearance and encouraged her young daughter to follow her example teaching her to take an interest in objects of beauty in the world, and encouraging her to play with the precious treasury of Razumovsky family jewellery. Thanks to her mother Anna grew up with an innate love of fashion which has pervaded both her life and her art. When she makes a personal appearance at a gallery in the UK, she radiates an exotic and extravagant sense of style which combines with her wonderfully warm personality and ready laugh to make her an irresistible guest. Her paintings seem to be an extension of this charming and elegant woman, channelling her personality and perception of beauty. Expressive, inventive and unpretentious, she could be described as the living embodiment of her art.
These images represent those curious blossoming stages when we taste the first essence of love and begin to crave to discover it for ourselves. Love takes time to develop, to come into its power and to bloom fully. When we are exploring ourselves we are often uncertain about our journey. We receive love and admiration from outside sources. People proclaim to us how wonderful we are but we are not always certain we believe them. But these words and gestures do touch us, they affect us and inspire us to look further within and to question, what do others see in me? Like the first petal of a rose a little colour begins to enter our lives and as we taste love we want to know more of it.
