Screen Printing UV Ink Series 9800 Product Bulletin 9800 Release G, Effective June 2009 See Bulletin Change Summary at end of Bulletin Product Description Recommended Types of Graphics and End Uses For Line Color and Four Color Screen Printing 3M Screen Printing UV Ink Series 9800 is a high performance, ultraviolet-curable ink system used to print multicolor graphics on a wide variety of 3M graphic films. The ink series includes transparent, opaque and four-color process inks for use on indoor or outdoor graphics. When protected with selected 3M clears, this ink produces a tough, flexible, graphic coating that is weather, chemical and abrasion-resistant. It also has superior performance on difficult application surfaces, including corrugated and riveted surfaces. When the ink is used as described in this Bulletin and graphics are constructed and used as described in the Product Bulletin for the 3M film, these types of graphics and end uses may be warranted by the 3M MCS Warranty. Please read the entire Bulletin for details. For indoor and outdoor graphics For graphics used in a petroleum environment where staining is not a concern Limitations of End Uses 3M specifically does not recommend or warrant the following uses, but please contact us to discuss your needs or recommend other products. Unsuitable End Uses for This Ink Transit-mix cement trucks or other vehicles frequently washed with concentrated, strong acids or aluminum brighteners. We recommend using the following for such applications: 3M Screen Printing Ink Series 1900 with screen print clear 1920DR for opaque color and 3M Scotchlite Screen Printing Ink Series 2900 with clear 2920DR for transparent color. Graphics made of multiple layers of ink and clear that must be stretched during installation. Graphics made for automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM); contact 3M Automotive Division at 1-800-328-1684 for alternatives. Compatible Products 3M Graphic Materials Ink series 9800 is compatible with most of 3M's Scotchcal, Controltac and Scotchlite branded graphic films that are designed for screen printing. For complete details about graphic construction options, recommended uses and durability, refer to the Product Bulletin for the base film or substrate (media) you are using. See 3M Related Literature at the end of this Bulletin. Graphic Protection 3M Screen Printing Gloss UV Clear 9800CL 3M Screen Printing Gloss UV Clear 9720i 3M Screen Printing Gloss Clear 9720UV 3M Screen Printing Low Gloss Clear 9730UV Application Tapes 3M Premasking Tape SCPM-44X 3M Prespacing Tape SCPS-53X 3M Prespacing Tape SCPS-55 (use for prespaced graphics with film having 3M's Comply Adhesive only) Warranty Information Warranty Notes Graphics Exposed to Abrasion or Staining Color Matching Ink to Film Warranty and Limited Remedy Sheet Preparation Liner Printing 3M Scotchlite Reflective Graphic Film 3M will honor the warranty given in the Product Bulletin for the base film that is current at the time you purchased the film. Processing conditions can affect the durability of the ink. Carefully follow all instructions in Instruction Bulletins 3.20 and 3.21. Graphics are not warranted against fading, cracking, peeling, lifting or discoloration due to severe abrasion or staining from cleaning solutions, engine fuels, exhaust, or organic solvents. If the color of a printed ink is matched to the color of a pigmented film, the finished ink and film may not maintain the same color or gloss after being exposed outdoors. The following is made in lieu of all other express or implied warranties, including any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose or implied warranty arising out of a course of dealing, custom or usage of trade: all 3M products are warranted to be free of defects in materials and manufacture at the time of shipment and to meet the specifications stated in this Product Bulletin. 3M will replace or refund the price of any 3M materials that do not meet this warranty within the specified time periods. These remedies are exclusive. In no case shall 3M be liable for any direct, indirect, or consequential damages, including any labor or non-3m materials charges. See the 3M Graphics Market Center Warranty Brochure at 3Mgraphics.com, which gives the terms, additional limitations of the warranty, if any, and limitations of liability. Most film liners are polyethylene-coated paper, which cannot be printed. Kraft paper liners can be printed. Print the liner before screen printing the graphic. Use a fast drying lacquer or a fast drying halftone black screen printing ink for paper. Close color matching of multi-sheet graphics is difficult on retroreflective materials because production lots may vary. Adjoining panels of Scotchlite reflective graphic films must be checked for both daytime and nighttime appearance. Follow the recommendations in Instruction Bulletin 2.1 to minimize within-lot and crossweb variation. Reflective films 680CM-10 and 680CRCM-10 are available already color matched. For these films to maintain reflectivity, only transparent inks should be used. Black and white inks are opaque. Using opaque inks like these in a formulation will reduce their transparency and prevent them from reflecting light. Product Bulletin 9800-2

Ink and Clear Preparation Coverage for Line Color Inks and Clear 9800CL Coverage for Four Color Inks Screen Printing Roller Coating Curing Methods Press Ready Formulations Frame Fabric Stencil Squeegee Method Focused-lamp Cure Unit Specifications Refer to the Instruction Bulletins listed in the 3M Related Literature section, located at the end of this Bulletin, for more complete information. Typically, one U.S. gallon (3.8 liter) of the line color inks or clear 9800CL covers 2500 to 3500 square feet (59 to 83 square meter/liter). Typically, with a PE390 plain weave mesh, one U.S. gallon (3.8 liter) of press-ready ink covers 8000 square feet (193.6 square m/l) at 50% dot. Adjust the quantities based on your requirements. Line color inks and clear 9800CL are supplied press ready and do not need to be combined with other components. Four color inks require the addition of halftone base to obtain the desired density. Refer to the Instruction Bulletins listed in the 3M Related Literature section, located at the end of this Bulletin, for more complete information. Use a rigid, metal frame. Include a 6 to 10 inch (15 to 25 cm) well between the frame and the graphic design on all sides. A PE355 to PE390 (140 to 155 threads per cm [tpc]), 31 to 34 micron, monofilament, polyester mesh is recommended for most applications. Use direct emulsions and thin capillary films that yield a thin ink deposit and are water soluble, resistant to ketones and strong lacquer solvents and UV ink compatible. Use a sharp squeegee with an 80 durometer (or equivalent) or harder plastic blade. Multiple durometer squeegees (70/90, 65/95/65, 70/90/70, or 75/95/75) also work. Use the off-contact screen printing method to produce a uniform impression. Make a fill pass and then make the impression pass. Although our UV clear coats are designed for screen printing, they can be roll coated. The process must produce the 3M recommended coating thickness of 6-12 microns in all areas of the graphic, with a gloss and an appearance that is acceptable to the end user. Achieving the correct thickness is critical. If the coating is too thin, it will not have the expected durability; if too thick, the coating will reduce the film's ability to stretch and conform. 3M does not recommend or endorse a specific roll coater, nor does 3M make specific recommendations on how to make our UV clears more suitable for roll coating. These are high viscosity solutions that require appropriate handling equipment, and may require adjustments to flow properly. Do not thin the clear coat or add any components (such as flow agents) that have not been approved by 3M. Refer to the Instruction Bulletins 3.20 and 3.21 for more complete information. Ink series 9800 is formulated to cure when exposed to a focused, medium-pressure, mercury-vapor lamp at a belt speed to achieve: 200-275 mj/cm 2 and 600 mw/cm 2 for colors 250-325 mj/cm 2 and 600 mw/cm 2 for clear 9800CL Note: We recommend measuring the UVA spectrum using a Uvicure Plus UVA/High Power model radiometer, which is available from: EIT Corporation, 108 Carpenter Drive, Sterling, VA 20164, Telephone: 703-478-0700 Product Bulletin 9800-3

Testing Complete testing information is found in the Instruction Bulletins listed in the Related 3M Literature section. Every print pass must pass these three tests. Appearance Test Abrasion Resistance Test Tape Snap Adhesion Test Special Applications Metallic and Pearlescent Inks Producing graphics with inks that contain metallic and pearlescent flakes requires careful attention to produce consistent, high quality graphics. Even small changes in components and processing conditions affect the print quality. Refer to the Instruction Bulletin 3.20 listed in the 3M Related Literature section for complete information. Use only the recommended flakes. Other flakes may not be outdoor durable. Note: Sparkle Silvex Aluminum Flakes are available from: Silberline Manufacturing Company, Inc., 130 Lincoln Drive, P.O. Printing With Metallic and Pearlescent Flakes Use the same screen printing and curing methods for metallic and pearlescent ink as for regular ink series 9800. Inks must be protected with screen print clear 9720UV, 9720i or 9800CL. Use the following mesh size recommendations. See the flake manufacturer for specific details. Mesh Size Recommendations Type Sparkle Silvex Metallic Flakes Pearlescent Flakes Median microns Mesh Size Small 19 34 micron or larger 355 to 390 plain weave Medium 22 34 micron or larger 305 plain weave Small < 20 34 micron or larger 355 to 390 plain weave Medium 10 to 40 34 micron or larger 305 plain weave Important Note! Shelf Life Of Flakes Metallic flakes require special handling. Exposure to air causes them to deteriorate and agglomerate. This will cause printing problems. We recommend buying only what can be used in a short period of time. See Instruction Bulletin 3.20 for details. After adding the metallic flakes, the pot life of mixed, metallic ink is 1 to 2 days. Pearlescent flakes do not cause the ink to gel, however, they will settle. Shelf Life, Storage and Shipping Shelf Life Use by the expiration date shown on the product packaging. A Use By Date, such as 01Dec2009, is on the ink container product label, as well as the outer shipping carton. Do not use ink that shows signs of gelling. Storage Conditions 60 to 90 F (15 to 32 C) Away from direct sunlight, mercury vapor lamps, quartz-halogen lamps, or arc lamps. Original container or in other sealed, black polyethylene containers. Do not store the inks in glass or metal containers. Shipping Finished Graphics Shipping Ink Refer to the base film's Product Bulletin. The inks are non-regulated when transported via ground. Opened ink boxes and bags may no longer provide adequate protection against leaks and spills. Exercise caution when shipping opened boxes or bags to ensure prevention of spills or leaks. In the United States, refer to the MSDS for further information. Health and Safety! CAUTION When handling any chemical products, read the manufacturers' container labels and the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for important health, safety and environmental information. To obtain MSDS sheets for 3M products go to 3M.com/MSDS, or by mail or in case of an emergency, call 1-800-364-3577 or 1-651-737-6501. Observe safe operating procedures when using ink series 9800. Provide adequate ventilation and wear appropriate gloves and other protective clothing to avoid all skin contact. When using any equipment, always follow the manufacturers' instructions for safe operation. Product Bulletin 9800-5
