Separations: None See Also: Administrative History Inspired by the centennial of the state of Illinois, Frederic Siedenburg, S.J., established the Illinois Catholic Historical Society at the School of Sociology, Loyola University, in 1918. From its inception it was supported financially and physically by the university. The goal of the society was to study and survey the Catholic history of Illinois; collect historical works, documents, records, relics and mementoes; create a Catholic library and museum; and disseminate knowledge of Catholic history through lectures and publications, specifically the Illinois Catholic Historical Review, a quarterly journal. Siedenburg presided as the first editor of the journal, with the first volume appearing in 1918 and continuing until 1929 before the name changed to Mid-America. In 1933 the society participated in the Century of Progress World s Fair with an exhibit of Marquette s cabin. In 1934 the society transferred complete control of the journal to Loyola University and the Illinois Catholic Historical Society ceased to exist. Scope and Content The Illinois Catholic Historical Society records comprise of 9.25 linear feet with the bulk of the records spanning the years 1918 to 1990, and include correspondence; financial records; minutes; membership records; and photographs. Some membership information for the journal Mid-America is included in the records. Subjects include the Illinois Catholic Historical Review, Century of Progress, Illinois Catholic Historical Society; and Mid-America. Organization is chronological. Rooney, and Gilbert Garraghan, S.J. Series 2: Publicity, 1922, n.d., Box 1 This series contains news articles about the Illinois Catholic Historical Society and its programs.
