Cupcakes It was Monday, December 5, 2016, and President Shannon Ryan (aka Mrs. Claus, wife of Chris Claus), let Russ Samuels rope us into some calisthenics to kick off the week.past member Patrick Donahue, president of the Rotary Club of Tehachapi, raised our holiday cheer by showing up for this meeting..ingo Werk s wife Mary brought still more cheer to the proceedings..we all thanked David Gendron for hosting our holiday party..and what would the first meeting of the month be without Jordan Holbert s cupcakes to celebrate members birthdays?...dennis Ridge thanked us for a successful food drive and solicited volunteers for Operation Teddy Bear at Moffett School on December 16..President Shannon s home was on the Sandpipers Holiday Home Tour. Your Grateful Nation Dan Moschella is the Vice President of Finance for the Fox Sports Media Group, and he has used that position to promote Your Grateful Nation (YGN) (www.yourgratefulnation.org), whose mission is to provide career transition services to Special Operations veterans from military to private sector employment. Their Board includes cofounder Rob O Neill, a member of the Seal team that killed Bin Laden, as well as the leader of the mission that rescued Captain Phillips and the mission that rescued Lone Survivor Marcus Luttrell. (O Neill is speaking at a July 27 YGN

fundraiser event to which we re all invited and was endorsed by Mark Burton as the best speaker I ve ever heard. ) Dan treated us to some moving bios of several of these brave warriors who ask for nothing and deserve much, each of whom has a PhD in getting things done. YGN welcomes funding and volunteers and, especially, corporate partners. Charlie Steinmetz Manhattan Beach Rotarian Charlie Steinmetz runs his family s foundation, which seems to be everywhere from Easter Island (Charlie just got back) to Moffett School, spreading their wealth to good causes seemingly everywhere we look. Charlie is also a stern (but always smiling) curmudgeon who never lets a feel-good charity moment pass without examining the business side of running a non-profit. So leave it to Charlie to ask whether Your Grateful Nation is duplicating the work of other veterans organizations. (But note that YGN s avowed purpose is direct its Tier One veterans to the highest level of corporate management.) New members, know that this is Charlie Steinmetz, as generous a soul and rigorous a manager as you ll ever meet. He makes Manhattan Beach Rotary shine. Yours In Rotary, Jim Hallett
