You may need to change the size of the eyes when you change the size of the animals. Crochet with whatever yarn you feel comfortable with and choose the colors you like. Butterflies Peggy Sew 1

BUTTERFLIES Body and head We start with the body and continue with the head. Rnd 1: 6sc in magic ring Rnd 2: (1 sc, 1 inc) x3= 9 sts Rnd 3: (2 sc, 1 inc) x3= 12 sts Rnd 4: (3 sc, 1 inc) x3= 15 sts Rnd 5: (4 sc, 1 inc) x3= 18 sts Rnd 6: (5 sc, 1 inc) x3= 21 sts Rnd 7-9: 1 sc in each st around= 21 sts Rnd 10: (5 sc, 1 dec) x3= 18 sts Rnd 11: (4 sc, 1 dec) x3= 15 sts Rnd 12: 1 sc in each st around= 15 sts Rnd 13: (3 sc, 1 dec) x3= 12 sts Rnd 14: 1 sc in each st around= 12 sts Stuff the body. Rnd 15: (1 sc, 1 inc) x6= 18 sts Rnd 16: (2 sc, 1 inc) x6= 24 sts Rnd 17-19: 1 sc in each st around = 24 sts Rnd 20: (2 sc, 1 dec) x6= 18 sts If you want to use safety eyes, put them in between rnd 18 and 19. If you want to embroider the eyes and mouth, embroider the eyes over rnd 19 and embroider the mouth over rnd 17. (see picture). Stuff the head Rnd 21: (1 sc, 1 dec) x6= 12 sts Rnd 22: (1 dec) x6= 6 sts Fasten off and pull the tail tight through one loop of each of the last 6 sts. Weave in loose ends. Optional: stripes on the body Sew stripes on the body every two rows. Sew larger stripes on larger rounds and shorter stripes on smaller rounds. (see picture) Butterflies Peggy Sew 3

Wings (make 2) You can use one single color or two different colors to make stripes. If you want to make striped wings, change colors every round. Don't cut off the thread when you change colors. Just leave it hanging so you can pick it up again the next time you change colors. The wings are made out of two separate parts that are crocheted together. Wing, upper part Rnd 1: 6sc in magic ring Rnd 2: (1 inc) x6= 12 sts Rnd 3-5: 1 sc in each st around= 12 sts Cut off and weave in loose ends. Wing, lower part Rnd 1: 6sc in magic ring Rnd 2: (1 inc) x6= 12 sts Rnd 3: (1 sc, 1 inc) x6= 18 sts Rnd 4-7: 1 sc in each st around= 18 sts Do NOT cut off your thread. You'll now crochet both parts of the wing together. Rnd 8: 1 sc on the lower part of the wing. Then continue on the upper part of the wing and crochet 1 sc in each st around (x12), then continue again on the lower part of the wing and crochet 1 sc in the remaining 17 sts of the previous rnd= 30 sts 4

You end up with something like this: Rnd 9: (8 sc, 1 dec) x3= 27 sts Rnd 10: (7 sc, 1 dec) x3= 24 sts Leave the tail long enough to sew the wing to the body. Do not stuff it, but press both sides together and sew one wing on each side of the body. Decorations on the wings If you made the wings in one single color, you can add decorations. Sew a small star on the upper part of the wing. Put your thread through a hole in the middle of the upper part of the wing and make 6 small stitches starting each time in the same hole. Make a circle to decorate the lower part of the wing Rnd 1: take the thread with the same color as the wing and crochet 6 sc in a magic ring. Rnd 2: change colors, (1 inc) x6= 12 sts Cut off and leave a long tail. Sew the circle onto the lower part of the wing. Butterflies Peggy Sew 5

Antenna (make 2) 5 ch, end with a sl.st in the first ch from the hook so that you end up with a circle. Crochet 5 sc in that circle. Cut off and use the tail to sew the antenna on top of the head Congratulations! You just finished your butterfly. Make many more in different colors and with different decorations. Use them as cuddly toys, attach them to key rings or just hang them up as decoration. 6
