DHR International POSITION SPECIFICATION POSITION TITLE: REPORTING TO: LOCATION: THE COMPANY: Board of Directors through the Chair Both Artistic Director and report to the Board Miami, FL Miami City Ballet https://www.miamicityballet.org/ Miami City Ballet (MCB), founded in 1985, is universally admired as one of the world s preeminent interpreters of the choreography of George Balanchine. Its repertory of more than 100 ballets, including 12 world premieres, was built upon the Balanchine repertory, style, and technique, and then expanded to include beloved classical works of importance and exciting new choreography by contemporary and ground-breaking artists. MCB is led by former NYC Ballet prima ballerina and television personality, Lourdes Lopez. Now in her sixth year as Artistic Director, Ms. Lopez brings a new level of artistry to the company, increasing the level of the company, adding classical repertoire, and commissioning new works. She is a national leader in the dance field and serves as a member of the board of the Ford Foundation. MCB presents a season of four repertory programs and a newly designed Nutcracker at Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami, Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Ft. Lauderdale, and Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach. Its new production of the Nutcracker is also presented annually by Los Angeles Music Center. The company is also presented annually at Artis-Naples Philharmonic Center. The annual operating budget is approximately $17 million, approximately half of which is earned through ticket sales, touring fees, and school tuition. The company enjoys significant support from the philanthropic community of South Florida and from local and national foundations and corporations. MCB is also presented nationally, and has appeared at Lincoln Center, Los Angeles Music Center, and Jacobs Pillow. This May (2018) it will be presented as part of Spoleto Festival USA and in June during Les Etés de la Danse in Paris. Its 2016 debut at Lincoln Center s David H. Koch Theater was hailed by the national press as a resounding success. The New York Times Alastair Macaulay wrote, Of all the ballet troupes who have visited the Koch in recent years, none looks so truly and completely a company. Miami City Ballet School (MCB School), founded in 1993, is one of the largest dance training programs in the nation, training dancers for careers with MCB and other professional companies throughout the world. MCB School s expanded national and international audition tours attract more than 1,300 students each season, and MCB School s scholarship program offers support to children locally and internationally, providing nearly $500,000 worth of scholarships each year. As one of the most diverse classical ballet companies in the nation, MCB serves as a gateway to the Americas for dancers from Central and South America, resulting in a robust international roster of both dancers and students. The company and school rehearses in a three-story building with state of the art studios and administrative space in Miami Beach. The school also offers programs of popular and classical dance instruction to members of the South Florida community. MCB s transformative Share the Dance: Community Outreach and Educational Programs reach deep into the community, touching nearly 23,000 young people, seniors, and other traditionally underserved community members annually through an array of programming. This expanded portfolio of programs introduces new and underserved audiences to the art form of classical ballet while building strong community relationships and engagement with the arts. SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful will be a working partner with the Artistic Director and the Board, who together set the vision and overall strategy for the company. The will design and control a sustainable financial model and continually improve the bottom line through careful expense control and increased income generation. The Executive Page 1

Director will manage the business aspects of the Company, the School, and the Education & Outreach program and will ensure that the management infrastructure serves all three. Along with the Artistic Director, the will be a spokesperson with donors and the media, and will interact directly with agents, venues, other arts organizations, and government officials. Specific Responsibilities: Forge an effective and positive working relationship with the Artistic Director and the Board Chair; Collaborate with the Artistic Director to set MCB s artistic and management goals and to build consensus with the Board and staff to realize those goals; Build and motivate a highly functional professional management team; recruit, mentor, evaluate, train and inspire a group of arts professionals to help achieve the mission of the organization; Manage the contract with the building management company, ensure the optimal use and safety of the building and manage the lease arrangements with the City of Miami Beach; With the support of the Board and Artistic Director, lead MCB s fundraising activities by identifying, cultivating, and soliciting gifts from individuals, foundations, and corporations; Ensure that fundraising stewardship programs are in place and fine-tuned; Develop and maintain relationships with corporate sponsors, foundations, individual donors, and government representatives who provide funding or who have the potential to support the company; In partnership with the Artistic Director, act as a principal voice for MCB; Work closely with the Board, providing support to facilitate its policies; With the Chair, help to build and expand Board membership and participation levels; Enthusiastically communicate the unique contributions made by MCB to the dance world, to the community, and to education and arts leaders in South Florida and nationally; Increase the income of the school and outreach programs while ensuring that the Artistic Director s vision is maintained; Develop communication strategies for MCB and guide the marketing and external messaging; Forge collaborations and partnerships with the arts community local, national, and international to enhance MCB s artistic excellence and profile and to enhance its touring potential and income; Develop relationships with the leaders of venues and broaden MCB s national and international profile by securing performance venues and festivals for presentations. QUALIFICATIONS AND PROFESSIONAL ATTRIBUTES: The will exhibit leadership abilities and specific skills in the areas of general management, marketing, development, and finance. The will create a business model that supports artistic excellence while ensuring a sustainable, long-term enterprise. The will have the capability to join the ranks of leaders in the arts management field in South Florida and throughout the country. Importantly, the will share the Artistic Director s vision for the company and help position it as one of the great classical ballet companies in the US and globally. Ambition, vision, and excellent business skills and entrepreneurial drive, combined with a deep respect for the artistic process, are essential characteristics of the successful. Page 2

The successful candidate will have: Experience working in a producing/presenting organization with a proven ability to support the vision of the creative director while balancing the financial and managerial forces inherent in every arts organization; A belief in the mission of MCB and a recognition of its importance in the field of dance and as part of the Balanchine legacy and the contemporary artistic cultural landscape; Leadership ability and behaviors demonstrated by a keen sense of self awareness, empathy, the ability to analyze complex management and political situations, and the ability to lead, influence, and reach consensus on a range of topics among multiple constituents; An entrepreneurial approach and sense of urgency coupled with a calm demeanor; Awareness and appreciation of working in a culturally diverse community; Proven success collaborating with a Board of Directors and an Artistic Director; An enthusiasm for and commitment to fundraising and a drive to increase the level and breadth of contributions; Ability to recognize and support artistic excellence while maintaining a financially sustainable business model; Experience in developing contributed revenue streams, including individual, institutional, corporate, and public/quasipublic donors and major gift cultivation; An analytical approach to business development, with the ability to gather and synthesize data and to make calculated business investment decisions based on the data; A demonstrated sense of marketing, with experience increasing earned income from ticket sales, tours, licensing, facility rentals, increasing income generating classes, and creating new opportunities for earned income; An understanding of new media, electronic, and print branding, and the sensitivity to balance building a brand while maintaining artistic sensibility; Strong team building skills with the ability to provide cohesion among a staff composed of a range of experienced professionals to entry-level employees; A person of unquestioned integrity who engenders trust and confidence; A positive outlook and a sense of humor; Spanish language fluency, which is an advantage, but not required. The ideal candidate will have gained and demonstrated the above skills through: Ten years of increasing responsibility as CEO of a presenting or performing arts organization, with an annual operating budget in excess of $7 million, that produces and/or presents classical performing arts; or Ten years of increasing responsibility at the C-suite level in a major ($25 million or above) performing arts organization that relies on a combination of earned and contributed income; or Ten or more years experience leading a complex organization, for profit or nonprofit, who is also conversant in the classical arts and has demonstrated a great personal interest as a donor and/or a board member of a similar organization.
