Claude Flight, who had recently completed a publication on the process of linocut printmaking, was invited to instruct at the newly formed school. Cyril Power, a respected architect, joined the faculty shortly after as a lecturer and Sybil Andrews was hired as the school secretary. Lill Tschudi, a talented Swiss artist, enrolled in the Grosvenor School of Modern Art in 1929 at the age of 18. Encouraged by Flight, Tschudi took up the linocut technique, which became her preferred medium. Eventually, through revenue from the sales of her prints, Tschudi would leave London to further her schooling at the Academies André Lhote in Paris. Tschudi studied life drawing with the Cubist painter Lhote, which perhaps was the inspiration for this work. Tschudi maintained a close relationship with Flight and continued to exhibit with the Grosvenor School group and contribute to the annual exhibitions of British linocuts. In a letter dated 5 July, 1938, Flight commented to Tschudi about this print, "In the Life Class I think you have got away with the subject better than anyone has with this particular subject before, it is [sic] nice colour & balance & your whites are very well managed." Following the inaugural exhibition of British linocuts in 1929 at the Redfern Gallery in London, the 1930s were the most productive and important period for the Grosvenor School artists. Tschudi produced 65 linocuts in the period between 1930 and 1939. This exceptional example of her mature work, dated 1938, is rare to the market and has only been available at public auction once in the past decade. Please note: this work is archivally matted but is unframed. Page 4 of 5 Louis Libaude, Maurice Utrillo, Galerie Eugene Blot, 1913 This work is of Maurice Utrillo's best-known subject, the neighbourhood of Montmartre in Paris. It features the distinctive Basilica of Sacré-Coeur on the left and the well-known windmill building Moulin de la Galette on the right. Also, this particular view substantially resembles a circa 1948 work entitled Le maquis de Montmartre, sold at auction in New York in 2012. Utrillo was born in Montmartre, a vibrant district known for its nightclubs, cafes and artist studios, to painter and artist's model Suzanne Valadon. Valadon gave Utrillo artistic instruction, and, upon embarking on his life as an artist, he set up his studio in Montmartre - as had other well-known artists such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and Vincent van Gogh, to name a few. Near the turn of the century, Paris was a hotbed of artistic ferment, and Utrillo was part of a group of Post-Impressionist avant-garde artists interested in contemporary art and literature named Les Nabis, who were influential in the 1890s. Utrillo's art dealer Louis Libaude declared, "Maurice Utrillo is the painter of Montmartre. Since Lupine, I believe no other artist has been able to render with such acute sensitivity the charm of this little provincial town, isolated on the summit of Paris. Utrillo excels in painting the cracked walls of the old houses. The smallest...façade takes on in his paintings an extraordinary intensity of colour and life." The original photo certificate is signed by Paul Pétridès and is included with this painting. This work was presented to Messrs. Fabris and Paillier. $90,000 ~ $120,000 CAD $80,000 CAD Lot # 117 WU CHANGSHUO 1844-1927 Chinese Chrysanthemum hanging scroll, ink and colour on paper, signed, dated 1918, inscribed with a poem in Chinese and stamped with three seals of the artist and on verso signed and titled 60 x 16 in, 152.4 x 40.6 cm The artist's inscription, along with the poem, indicates that he painted this when he was at the age of 74. $20,000 ~ $30,000 CAD $19,000 CAD
