NSU SPT NEWS Nova Southeastern University Sport and Recreation Management Newsletter Volume 8, Issue 17, August 30, 2017 CAREERS IN THE MARINE INDUSTRY Sean (MBA 15) is pictured here with Professor Olson at a recent Marine Industries Association of South Florida s open house in celebration of the MIASF s new home in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The Association promotes the boating lifestyle of South Florida which has an $8.8 billion economic impact in Broward County and $11.5 billion regionally! Sean was a graduate student working on his MBA in Sport Revenue Generation when he started as an intern with MIASF. Today he is a Director and is the star of Salty Jobs. When considering a career, you might want to consider the variety of jobs offered in the marine business in South Florida. This region is known as the goods and service center of the world for the yachting and marine community. Sean Smith is making quite a name for himself as the Director of Development for the Marine Industries Association of South Florida. Here is what he shared about the Salty Jobs series: The goal of the Salty Jobs video series is to present the different types of jobs that are available in the marine industry, engaging a younger audience about the potential to secure life-long careers that allow for home ownership, the ability to raise a family, and the opportunity to save for retirement. The Marine Industries Association of South Florida is proud of the fact that the 136,000 marine-related jobs in our region typically pay 28% more than the State average, and has been working very hard to make the younger generations aware of the career opportunities that exist in our industry.

2107 GRADUATE GABRIELLA GABBY MCCUE FLORIDA PANTHERS EMPLOYEE Recently Traveled to Barbados! Gabby, pictured at the far right in the red shirt, is an Activation Specialist for Corporate Partnerships and shared her job description and some thoughts about her job: Strategic development, implementation and day-to-day management of Corporate Partnership accounts to enhance overall investment value for sponsors and increase long-term revenue for the organization Building and sustaining ongoing relationships with internal team members and with the individuals associated with the organization s Corporate Partners Develop creative activation programs for Corporate Partners leveraging the breadth of assets within the Panthers, BB&T Center and Panthers IceDen portfolios. Manage all of the day-to-day communication with assigned Corporate Partner accounts Execute all contractual sponsor deliverables for Corporate Partner accounts by interfacing and collaborating with various vendor and internal departments Identify and manage any upsell opportunities with existing Corporate Partner accounts Barbados Marketing Inc. is one of my many clients so I had the opportunity to visit the island this past week. They are the first island in the Caribbean to open up an ice rink. We brought two Florida Panthers players to host a clinic where they taught the children of Barbados to play ice hockey. We also visited Nightgale Children's home during our visit. It was a wonderful experience to say the least. Some of my other clients include JetBlue, Papa Johns, Uber and Tijuana Flats. Those are just 4 of the 17 sponsors assigned to me. Every single day I don t feel like I am going to work. I love what I do and I can't wait to see where this takes me!

PART-TIME OPPORUNITY Please contact Professor Olson if you are interested in working for Dockside Corporate Services at the Boat Show. The company is a diversified marine industry service company providing concierge service for luxury yachts and marina facilities. The company provides management, staffing and logistics for boat shows, special events, meetings and seminars or international trade missions. Here s a chance to make some extra money for the holidays and be part of the largest in-water boat show in the world! Contact Professor Olson at onancy@nova.edu or call (954) 383-1132. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Volunteers are needed at the Davie Golf Course from 11:30am - 6:30pm on Friday, October 13th. Davie Parks and Recreation has reached out to us and would be happy to have our students serve as volunteers for the duration of the tournament or during set up/registration and breakdown times (11:00-1:00pm / 4:00pm - 6:30pm). Please let Professor Olson know if you can help out. Contact her at onancy@nova.edu or (954) 383-1132. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit Kids Can and the Davie-Cooper City Chamber of Commerce. Kids Can is a local nonprofit organization based on the concept of kids helping kids. Their mission is to unlock the potential in our children by empowering them with the opportunity to give back to the community and enrich the lives of children who may be less fortunate.
