Why You Have This Journal This journal will help you as you read the novel Stargirl. In it you will document your thoughts and feelings about this uplifting novel and make important connections. Many of the things you ll write about in this journal will appear on your final Stargirl test. How This Journal Will Be Graded Please make sure you thoroughly answer the prompts and complete the instructions on each page. You will be graded on how well you: - use complete sentences to express your ideas. - write neatly so it s easy to read. - explain your thoughts completely.

Page 1 Vocabulary Below is a list of new vocabulary words you will need to know before we read Stargirl. Read the definition of each word. When you see that word used in the book, write the sentence from the book that the word is used in. 1) Page 10 nonconformity (n.) a refusal to conform, or to act, think, speak, appear, as everyone else 2) Page 14 amok (adv.) in a confused and reckless manner 3) Page 40 dormant (adj.) being in a state of suspended consciousness; marked by an absence of activity 4)Page 101 kaput (adj.) utterly finished, defeated, or destroyed 5) Page 106 masochistic (adj.) taking pleasure in being abused or in pain

An Enchanted Place Page 9 In chapter 17 you were shown Stargirl s enchanted place. This place is special because it allows Stargirl to erase herself and meditate. Think of a place where you could go to erase yourself and meditate. This place should be peaceful and special to you. Use sensory language to describe what this place looks like, feels like, sounds like, and smells like. The Prank Page 6 After reading chapter 11, explain the prank that is pulled on Stargirl. Why do you think people pull pranks on others? How are pranks a form of bullying? Prank on Stargirl: Why do people prank? How are pranks a form of bullying?

Hot Seat Disaster Page 7 After reading chapters 12-13 explain how the Hot Seat that featured Stargirl became a total disaster. Then explain how everyone seemed to feel during that episode. How did the jury feel? How did Stargirl feel in the beginning and how did she feel by the end? How did Leo feel? How did YOU feel as you read it? Random Acts of Kindness Page 8 After reading up to chapter 15, you ve seen many examples of Stargirl doing nice things for complete strangers, like leaving candy hearts on people s desks, cards in their notebooks, and singing to them on their birthday.
