The course introduces exposure control and basic black and white darkroom procedures. Students will Explore the evolution of photography as an art form evaluating the form and content of a variety of photographic images and trends throughout history 2. Students will demonstrate the use of the camera operating systems & controls, creating photographs that reflect an understanding of settings and lighting 3. Students will begin to develop seeing like an artist, creative interpretation and personal style, composing and taking photographs as well as using various darkroom and digital applications to alter photographic images for artistic expression 4. Students will explore approaches for making black and white prints, processing black and white film yielding negatives and papers yielding prints 5. Students will develop verbal critique skills evaluating the form & content of photographs relating to the study of artistic style or expression. 6. Students will assemble and present a portfolio of photographs (body of work) for presentation.

Course Competencies and Objectives By the end of the semester, students will be able to: Competency 1 Students will Explore the evolution of photography as an art form evaluating the form and content of a variety of photographic images and trends throughout history Objective 1.1 Students will examine the historical evolution of photography from its roots in the camera obscura to present day, discussing the changing methods of capturing images as well as the content/meaning of individual pieces in their cultural context. Objective 1.2 Students will produce images understanding stylistic forms & techniques used by artists from various periods Objective 1.3 Students will compare and contrast individual artistic trends in photography and take photographs that reflect influence by these trends Competency 2: Students will demonstrate the use of the camera operating systems & controls, creating photographs that reflect an understanding of settings and lighting Objective 2.1 Students will demonstrate an understanding of basic camera settings such as auto or manual mode, aperture, exposure, shutter speed, scene modes, macro, focus, white balance, and specify the functional differences between focal length groups, manual focus and auto focus as well as metering techniques. Objective 2.2 Students will demonstrate an understanding of basic lighting qualities and settings for use in a variety of situations such as camera flash settings, artificial or natural light, indoor, outdoor, nighttime, directional, snow, water, panorama, etc. Competency 3: Students will begin to develop seeing like an artist, creative interpretation and personal style, composing and taking photographs as well as using various darkroom and digital applications to alter photographic images for artistic expression Objective 3.1 Students will begin to see like an artist developing their own creative interpretation and personal style for assignments in the subjects, lighting and camera settings they choose Objective 3.2 Students will demonstrate an understanding of composition and different organizational formats such as horizontal, vertical, diagonal, close, mid and long shot compositions Objective 3.3 Students will make black and white exposures evaluating the distribution of dark and light values and texture constructing images which emphasize pattern, movement, rhythm and shape Objective 3.4 Students will Apply exposure compensations for weather conditions and light angles for artistic expression demonstrating basic knowledge of altering photographs using the darkroom & digital imaging software such as cropping, straightening, red eye, spot removal, corrections, contrast, color, masking, layers, filters, etc. Competency 4: Students will explore approaches for making black and white prints, processing black and white film yielding negatives and papers yielding prints Objective 4.1 Students will explore fundamental enlarger operations and approaches Objective 4.2 Students will Expose photographic papermaking contact sheets, test prints and enlargements and process black and white film yielding negatives and papers yielding prints in small tank (film) or tray (paper) Objective 4.3 Students will demonstrate creating photographs in a variety of sizes & formats. Competency 5 Students will develop verbal critiquing skills evaluating the form & content of photography relating to the study of artistic style or expression and demonstrate the understanding of displaying a portfolio (body of work) for exhibition. Objective 5.1 Students will participate in critiques, discussions and activities using appropriate photographic terms and vocabulary. Objective 5.2 Students will analyze form, composition, lighting, focus and digital manipulation using a variety of photographs Objective 5.3 Students will create a digital or actual portfolio (body of work) for presentation or exhibition Competency 6: Students will assemble and present a portfolio of photographs (body of work) for presentation.
