Making Simple Circuits Using Greeting Cards Tpic: Learn hw t make a simple electric circuit. Suggested grades 3 6 Target standards - Grade 4 Materials/Resurces needed: SMUD dwnladable circuit template SMUD dwnladable I Had a Bright Idea at SMUD card and template Cpper adhesive tape Buttn batteries 2032 LED light stickers Small binder clips Large needle r sharp bject t pke a hle Cardstck Assrted art supplies: markers, sctch tape, scissrs, pencils, pens, rulers, cnstructin paper Student Greeting Card wrksheet (ptinal) Prep time: 15 minutes Lessn time: 10 minutes Teacher-guided templates: 1 hur per template Outcme: Students fllw a template t make a simple circuit with an LED. They apply what they learn t creating greeting cards which have LED light. Standards: In appendix Vcabulary: In appendix Pwering frward. Tgether. SMUD 0115-18 Thank yu!
Prep Tray #1 (1 tray per grup) One Circuit Template (1 per student) Pre-cut 5 cpper adhesive strips (2 per student) Buttn batteries (1 per student) Small binder clip (1 per student) Tray #2 (1 tray per grup) One I Had a Bright Idea at SMUD card template (1 per student) Pre-cut 7 cpper adhesive strips (2 per student) Buttn batteries (1 per student) Small binder clip (1 per student) Make craft items available at a separate, cmmn table. Art supplies (markers, clred pencils, tape, etc.) Card stck Additinal batteries Pre-cut, adhesive cpper tape Cpper tape band-aids Purchase sample greeting cards which have lights, sunds, music etc. when pened. Engage Shw students a fancy electrnic greeting card yu just received in the mail. Ask students if they wuld like t make their very wn greeting card that lights up. Teach/Build/Activity Ask students, What stres electricity? Write/draw the respnses n the bard (encurage students t ntice bjects which stre energy in the rm). Have a flashlight handy. Draw and label battery n the bard with lines extending frm the psitive and negative sides. Ask students t give examples f what the battery can pwer. List examples n the bard. Draw in a light bulb and make a cmplete circuit. Write the wrd circuit n the bard. Ask students, Hw we can turn the light n and ff? Write the wrd switch n the bard and draw a switch n the circuit. Tell students they will be making a circuit t pwer a LED light bulb. Have students draw and label the fllwing terms n the circuit n the student wrksheet. Wire Battery Lad /LED light bulb 2 Teacher
Switch Psitive Negative Using the materials which have already been set up n Tray #1, help students fllw the steps t create a circuit n the Circuit Template. Apply cpper tape placing it directly ver the template markings. Sme students may require help in peeling the backing frm the tape. If the tape tears, make any repairs with the cpper band-aids. Apply the LED sticker n the utline fr the sticker. Pinty end (negative ) shuld tuch the negative cpper tape. Wide end (psitive +) shuld tuch the psitive cpper tape side. Pke ne hle (Step 4) n page 3, using a sharp bject. Place buttn battery n the designated template marking. Ensure that the psitive side is facing up. Observe hw the electricity will mve frm the psitive side f the battery t the LED and then back t the negative side f the battery. Clse the circuit by clsing page 3 ver page 2. This clses the circuit and the LED will glw n the back cver. Secure the battery in place with a small ffice clip. Using the materials which have already been set up n Tray #2, help students fllw the steps t create a circuit n the I Had a Bright Idea at SMUD greeting card. Apply cpper tape placing it directly ver the template markings. Sme students may require help in peeling the backing frm the tape. Demnstrate with duct tape n a bard hw t fld the crners back. A gd flding technique will be tear free and ensure cnductivity. If the tape tears, make any repairs with the cpper band-aids. Pke the ne hle, where indicated, using a sharp bject. Apply the LED sticker n the utline fr the sticker. Pinty end (negative ) shuld tuch the negative cpper tape. Wide end (psitive +) shuld tuch the psitive cpper tape side. Place buttn battery n the template marking. Ensure that the psitive side is facing up. Put a small dab f glue r small duble sided tape t hld the battery in place. Avid placing glue n the cpper tape. Observe hw the electricity will mve frm the psitive side f the battery t the LED and then back t the negative side f the battery. Clse the circuit by flding alng the dtted lines. This clses the circuit and the LED will glw thrugh the frnt cver when the card is clsed. Have the students use the prper electrnic terms when discussing their circuits. Battery, wire, psitive, negative, switch and etc. 3 Teacher
Explre/Engineer Have students create their wn greeting cards. Students must first cmplete the Student Greeting Card wrksheet and draw ut their circuits fr apprval befre giving them additinal tape and batteries. The drawing shuld indicate: Electricity path Battery placement Psitin f LED light sticker Nature f switch Encurage students t experiment and create new switching devices fr their greeting cards. Have available cnductive materials n the craft table such as brads, wire and paper clips. Assessment Students apply their learning in develping a circuit by designing, drawing and creating a crrect circuit using apprpriate vcabulary. Crssver Have the students create a card t celebrate an event in anther subject: Pi day - Math Petry - Language Arts Capital Light Up Map - Gegraphy Experiment with varying circuit switching devices and jurnal the bservatins. Accmmdatins and Extensins Have students start a marketing campaign t sell their greeting cards fr a fundraiser. Have students make greeting cards fr a specific hliday: Father s Day, Mther s Day, Chinese New Year and etc. Make Valentine s Day special by creating mailbxes in which a light shines when the mailbx flag is raised. Anticipated Miscnceptins Students may think that circuits have t be a circle. Students may think that wire is the nly available cnductive material. Safety Supervisin may be needed when using a sharp bject t pke hles. 4 Teacher
