ABOUT THE LOS ANGELES JAZZ INSTITUTE The Los Angeles Jazz Institute houses and maintains one of the largest jazz archives in the world. All styles and eras are represented with a special emphasis on the preservation and documentation of jazz in southern California. Many artists personal collections are being preserved at the Institute including the archives of Howard Rumsey, Bud Shank, Gerry Mulligan, Shorty Rogers, Art Pepper, Bob Cooper, June Christy, Pete Rugolo, Johnny Richards, Ken Hanna, Dr. Wesley LaViolette, Jimmie Baker and Sleepy Stein. The Jazz Institute actively uses the materials in the archive by maintaining a busy schedule of outreach activities including concerts, festivals, broadcasts, publications and the release of important recordings on Compact Disc. The Institute is housed at California State University Long Beach. The Institute is used by teachers, scholars, students, musicians, independent researchers, the media and the industry. I t is with great pleasure that the Los Angeles Jazz Institute presents: Stratospheric, celebrating the illustrious career of Maynard Ferguson and the multitude of composers, arrangers and instrumentalists who have worked with him. From his earliest days in Canada to his work as a sideman and featured soloist, on to leading his own ensembles he has had a major impact on the jazz world... an impact that carries on at the beginning of the 21st century. The concept of Stratospheric is to celebrate Maynard s entire career from the late 1940s to the present. There are 18 concerts, 3 film showings and 8 panel discussions featuring a wide array of alumni. Some concerts feature MF alumni leading their own groups and there are also a number of all-star bands playing the original arrangements from many eras of his career. The alumni concerts feature a host of incredible trumpet players coming from all over the world to honor The Boss. Maynard himself will be in attendance all four days as the Guest of Honor. He ll be participating in some of the panel discussions and will perform with the current edition of Big Bop Nouveau for the big Sunday night finale. This will be an historic occasion and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I hope you will be able to join us. KEN POSTON Director Los Angeles Jazz Institute MESSAGE FROM MAYNARD It should be a very exciting four days, not just musically, but personally as well. I m looking forward to the many fine bands that will be there, and what fun to hear so many of the guys who have been with me in the past, both as players and arrangers. See you in the fall...
