DESCOMFIRST Design Competition for Industrial System and Environment Background An Industrial and Systems Engineer is one who is concerned with the design, installation, and improvement of integrated systems of people, material, information, equipment, and energy by drawing upon specialized knowledge and skills in the mathematical, physical, and social sciences, together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design to specify, predict, and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems (Handbook of Industrial EngineringTechnology and Operating Management: Salvendy,2001). In other words, Industrial Engineering has studies that include human, material, technology/equipment and environment which all of the components are integrated in a system. In order for the system to work properly, all the elements should be able to work together. The paradigms of Human Factor Engineering and Occupational Ergonomics in Industrial Engineering study stated that in order to create a high productivity at work, whether it s equipment factor or environment must be fitted to the needs of human and their work activity. The capability of equipment design considering human needs and other factors as the required competences of an Industrial Engineering undergraduate need to have. The purpose of Descomfirst is to develop student creativity and innovation emboided in the design of products / equipment that can be useful in industry, including manufacturing and services industry. The theme of descomfirst 2017 is innovation of industrial equipment. This theme was chosen as the study of the competition in 2017 because in the era of globalization, competition in the industry is very tight, especially with the free market. So innovations in industry is necessary to create effective and efficient productivity by paying attention to the safety of workers. With the increase in productivity, the competitiveness of industry in Southeast Asia will also increase. 1
Innovation of Industrial Equipment Industrial equipment is supportive tool in manufacture and service industry to simplify work not only for large-scale industry but also the housing and medium-scale industries. Innovation of industrial equipment aimed to improve productivity and efficiency in terms of time, space, and cost. The tool is used to improve the performances for an optimal productivity. SubTheme a. Manual Material Handling Manual Material Handling (MMH) is kind of activities to manually load and using manpower such as pushing, lifting, lowering, pulling or carrying load. Example: trolly to carry material, wheelchairs, etc b. Safety Equipment Safety Equipment is equipment that used to maintain safety during the work in order to avoid and minimize the occurance of accidents that might befall workers by paying attention to ergonomics aspect Example: safety glasses for welders, comfortable earplugs anti noise, etc c. Industrial Tools Industrial tools are tools used by worker to help their production work such as cutting, mixing, assembling, etc Example: cutting tools, dought mixers, etc 2
Design Aspects General a. Originality of ideas The idea of design product must be an original design b. Never been published Design product never been published through media before c. Can be realized Design product can be realized in real life Specific a. Innovative Design product use new idea and never existed before or add new things in existing design by considering the needs of industry b. Safety Design made with attention to occupational health and safety (OHS) for workers who used it in order not to endanger workers whether in short or long term c. Affordable Estimated cost should be affordable to industry needs, view of : manufacture cost, operational cost and maintenance cost. d. Aesthetics Design should be focus in on art and beauty and pleasureable to the senses vision, hearing, touch, taste and emotions, not just utilitarian and functional. e. Eco-friendly Design must contain material that is safe for the environment and can be recycled (sustainable) therefore we have contributed in saving our earth 3
