the hitoshi hoshi collection
the hitoshi hoshi collection The collection consists entirely of Chinese Ming Dynasty and Korean Lee Dynasty tomb sculptures collected by the late Mr. Kaichiro Nezu. Mr. Nezu was born in 1860 in Yamanashi, a prefecture near Tokyo. Mr. Nezu had many business interests in electricity, brewing, textiles and insurance. He distinguished himself in the private rail sector and was widely known as the Rail King. Mr. Nezu was an avid collector of Asian antiques, amassing a large and important collection around which he founded his now-famous namesake museum in the Minato district of Tokyo. Whilst the museum concentrated on the national treasures of Japan, the Nezu family maintained their own private collections which included the carvings housed at the cemetery below Mount Fuji and their Qianlong clock collection which was recently sold in Hong Kong for $35,000,000. The Hitoshi Hoshi Collection is formed of fourteen marble and granite tomb figures of monumental size, presently housed in the Albuquerque Aquarium in New Mexico. The carvings are of high quality and offer a unique opportunity for museums or collectors to purchase important tomb carvings on the open market. Monumental pieces of this era and size are rarely seen other than at the Ming tomb sites in Beijing.
