The region s airport, Charleston International Airport (CHS), sees more than 1.5 million passengers per year. The airport offers flights from 7 major airlines with non-stop flights to 23 airports and 18 cities in the United States. The region is also home to the Port of Charleston, one of the top 10 container ports in the United States. Activity at the port is on the rise and continues to be supported by a growing manufacturing and automotive industry as well as demographic shifts to the southeastern United States. The South Carolina Ports Authority reported a 14% increase during the 2015 Fiscal Year ending June 30. The port handled approximately 1.9 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) during the year, an increase of 231,473 TEUs from the 2014 Fiscal Year. The Charleston Harbor deepening project recently approved final approval. Plans include deepening the Charleston Harbor channel to 52 feet and entrance channel to 54 feet, as well as enlarging turning basins to accommodate larger post-panamax vessels. Economy & Labor Market The region s economy is largely driven by the finance, insurance, real estate, rental and leasing, manufacturing, and professional and business services. Additionally, Charleston continues to rank among the top cities to visit in the nation, driving a strong tourism industry that contributes to the region s economy. According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), gross domestic product (GDP) for the MSA totaled $34.4 billion in 2014, accounting for 18.1% of South Carolina s total GDP. The finance, insurance, real estate, rental and leasing sector is strengthening over recent years and contributes to a greater portion of total GDP. In 2014 the sector accounted for 21.0% of total GDP, increasing from 19.4% in 2001. Professional and business services are also playing a greater role in the region s GDP than they did the past. The sector contributed to 11.6% of total GDP in 2014, up from 9.3% in 2001. CHARLESTON Charleston, South Carolina is an attractive blend of old and new. At its core is the Port of Charleston. For 350 years, Charleston s harbor has because it offered natural protection and provided transportation several hundred miles into the interior of the state. From Charleston, large agricultural plantations specializing in rice, indigo, and cotton were established. By 1750, Charleston was the dominant trading port in the southern colonies. This port has grown over the subsequent years into one of the busiest ports on the east coast of the U.S. moving 170,000 shipping containers a month from 5 terminals. The Port also attracted the U.S. military during World War II, when the U.S. Navy established a presence. Today, that presence has grown into the region s single largest employer, the Joint Base Charleston (a combination of the Naval Weapons Station and the Charleston Air Force Base). While there are 70 state and federal agencies present on the base, the largest contingent is the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Atlantic (SPAWAR), which specializes in information collection and technology management for the Navy.
