Troy Brown brings a wealth of experience to the City of Dodge City and we are delighted to have him join our team. If you see Troy around the city, make sure you welcome him to our community. 3. Water crews have had a busy week with main breaks. All breaks have been caused by the temperature change. As the ground freezes and thaws shifting in the ground occurs and causes the pipes to break. Saturday around noon there was a break at 1701 Ave C, Sunday was at Manor and Arapahoe, Tuesday s break occurred at Ave D and Mulberry, Wednesday s break was in the alley of the 1900 block of Hart and Thompson, Thursday s break was at 2401 Hart, and Friday s break was at Harris and McArtor. During these times some services were interrupted as the crew s need the water movement at a minimum for a quicker and easier repair. 4. Street crews performed maintenance for the levy inspection last week that is performed by the Core of Engineers from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The levy gets inspected once a year by the core to make sure we are in compliance with the program that will help the city receive government aid in the event of a flood. 5. Dodge City Ranked 4th in Top 10 True Western Towns by True West Magazine. Dodge City was again listed in the Top 10 True Western Towns of 2018 by True West Magazine. News Release True West Magazine Contact: Publisher Ken Amorosano 888-687-1881 / ken@twmag.com Dodge City, KS Honored as Top Ten True Western Town by True West Magazine! Dodge City s fame was cemented by Gunsmoke, the long-running Western that aired between 1955 and 1975. But the real Cowtown had a history even more exciting and interesting than that of Marshal Dillon, Miss Kitty and the other fictional characters. That is one reason Dodge City is #4 among True West Magazine s 2018 Top Western Towns. Abilene, KS won the top honor. They will be featured in the February 2018 issue, hitting newsstands on December 26, 2017. Wild Texas cowboys driving cattle to Dodge made the town famous in the 1870s and the story continues today at venues like Boot Hill Museum. Early residents, including saloon owner and Dodge City Cowboy Band leader Chalkley Chalk Beeson, donated many of the thousands of artifacts and photos in its collection. Beeson s Long Branch Saloon, which burned in 1885, was reopened in 1947. The museum maintains Boot Hill Cemetery and a replica of old Front Street. The Guns that Won the West exhibit draws enthusiasts from all over. Hold onto your hat for Dodge City Days, a ten-day celebration highlighted by cowboys on horseback driving longhorns down Wyatt Earp Boulevard. Atop Boot Hill, see a bronze statue of a cowboy erected in 1927. A walking tour passes 31 large bronze medallions honoring real and fictional characters, including actors from Gunsmoke. Dodge City s history is remarkable and fascinating, says True West Executive Editor Bob Boze Bell. And it still lives in the events, the buildings, the collections that are visited by thousands of people every year. There s no question that Dodge City is a Top True Western Town. This is the thirteenth year True West has presented this annual award. Editors base their selection on criteria demonstrating how each town has preserved its history through old buildings, museums and other institutions, events, and promotions of historic resources. True West magazine is in its 66th year of leading the way in presenting the true stories of Old West adventure, history, culture and preservation.
