PLAY WRIGHT S NOTES The idea for In the Com pany of Sin ners and Saints emerged from a con ver sa tion I had with a col league at Texas State Uni ver sity-san Marcos as we dis cussed the chal lenges fresh men face in their first year away from home. For many stu dents, fresh man year is an un prec e - dented time of in creased free dom and greater re spon si bil ity, of fewer rules but more con se quences. We wanted to jumpstart a con ver sa tion about is sues of per sonal ac count - abil ity and moral am bi gu ity. We wanted to chal lenge the fresh men to think about dif fi cult choices and we wanted to do it in a way that gave the stu dents a voice. In the Com - pany of Sin ners and Saints was in cor po rated into the fresh - man year cur ric u lum at Texas State Uni ver sity-san Marcos in what may have been the first-ever col lab o ra tion of its kind be tween a thea tre de part ment and a fresh man year pro gram at a ma jor uni ver sity. Over three thou sand stu dents and their pro fes sors saw and dis cussed the play as a part of the uni ver sity s 2009-2010 Com mon Ex pe ri ence. My hope is that the play will chal lenge au di ences of all ages to ex - plore the role of du al ity in their own lives, to con sider the nuanced dif fer ences be tween avenge and re venge, to think about the rights and re spon si bil i ties of Internet use, and to ex am ine the un ex pected sim i lar i ties be tween tech - nol ogy and re li gion re vealed in the play. Au di ences are ex - pected to leave the thea tre with more ques tions than an - swers. While it helps to know that Saint Lucy is the pa tron saint of the blind and that limbo is a place or state of un - cer tainty, even with out this prior knowl edge, au di ences can re late to the moral di lemma Lucy faces. 5

NOTES ABOUT THE PRO DUC TION Du al ity plays a prom i nent role in this drama. For the pre - miere at Texas State Uni ver sity-san Marcos, we used mod - u lar set pieces to sug gest the var i ous lo ca tions in the play. The sim plic ity of this de sign fa cil i tated the quick changes be tween scenes and helped vi su ally re-en force the un der ly - ing con cept that things are not al ways what they ap pear to be. An over head pro jec tion screen helped to fur ther es tab - lish lo ca tion and added a layer of tech nol ogy, ap pro pri ate in a play set in a tech nol ogy-rich en vi ron ment. The pro jec - tions were es pe cially ef fec tive in de pict ing the hos pi tal mon i tor and the game show mar quee in Act II. We used the pro jec tions to help blur the line be tween real and ab surd, but other de sign choices could achieve the same ef fect. The pro jec tion screen could also be used for the op tional YouTube video of the lit tle girls sing ing their chant in the very be gin ning of the play. The re cur ring mo tif of light and the fre quent ref er ences to sight and blind ness un der score the play s em pha sis on the dif fi culty of see ing clearly. The light that Saint Lucy switches on with her open ing line in Act II should be one that she can turn off and on as needed. Lucy s Lul laby is the only song sung live. All other mu sic is played from the ac com pa ni ment CD. It is im por tant that ref er ences to tech - nol ogy and mov ies stay cur rent. Di rec tors are en cour aged to make the nec es sary ad just ments to keep the script up - dated and rel e vant. 6

ACT ONE Three chil dren (LUCY, ALEX and JD as lit tle girls) run DC and re cite the chant be low while play ing a threeway hand -clap ping game. When they come to the word hell, LUCY and JD both put fin gers to their lips in ex ag ger ated avoid ance of the for bid den word. ALEX bra zenly shouts hell, which makes them all gig gle. Af - ter the game, they run off laugh ing. Al ter na tively, the chant can be heard only as an au di - tory el e ment; or the chil dren sing ing the chant can be shown in a YouTube-style video pro jec tion. Saints and sinners, sinners and saints. One s goody goody and the other one ain t. Saints go to heaven; sinners go to (hell). Sometimes the difference is really hard to tell. SCENE 1 SCENE: Fri day morn ing. LUCY, ALEX, JD and CONNOR are seated in the car DC. ALEX sits in the driver s seat. LUCY rides in the pas sen ger seat. JD is rel e gated to the 9

10 In the Com pany of Sin ners and Saints Act I backseat but leans for ward in an ef fort to be part of the front-seat con ver sa tion. CONNOR slumps in the seat be - hind ALEX, com pletely re moved from the girls con ver - sa tion. All four wear cloth ing ap pro pri ate for high school. LUCY s out fit (in clud ing a hat) re flects her fash - ion edg i ness and in no va tive style. ALEX sports a very ex pen sive, trendy look. JD s clothes are a cheap im i ta - tion of ALEX style. CONNOR wears jeans and a T-shirt. All four use their elec tron ics (ipods, cell phones, iphones, etc.) through out the scene. CON NOR has a small gui tar case in the seat be side him. He car ries the gui tar with him wher ever he goes. The busi ness of driv - ing, and all re lated ac tion as so ci ated with be ing in the car, is pantomimed. As the lights come up, the girls re - cite the last lines of the chant in uni son. LUCY, ALEX, JD. saints go to heaven, sin ners go to hell, some times the dif fer ence is re ally hard to tell! (They all laugh.) I can t be lieve you put that on YouTube. I swear! I could not stop laugh ing last night. JD. You put that on YouTube? Alex! You prom ised you would n t! ALEX. Oh come on, JD! We were in kin der gar ten. It s hi - lar i ous. JD. I was fat! ALEX. Chubby. But in a cute way. LUCY. We looked so in no cent. ALEX. We looked ador able. JD. Don t you think it s kind of ran dom that the new blog is called, Sin ners and Saints? LUCY. What new blog? JD. Sin ners and Saints. Have n t you seen it?

Act I In the Com pany of Sin ners and Saints 11 LUCY. No. Who writes it? JD. No body knows. It s anon y mous. LUCY. What s it about? JD. Ev ery thing. Stu dents, teach ers what they re do ing or not do ing! It s so cool! It s al ready had over 2000 hits. Ev ery body s talk ing about it. ALEX. Well, I m not. Can we move on? JD. I m just say ing ALEX. So, Lucy, that s a new look. LUCY. Yeah. Like it? ALEX. You ll never get the hat past Mr. Kellerman. LUCY. So, I ll take it off if I see him. JD. Is that real? (She in di cates some thing un usual on the hat: fur, a feather, a jewel, etc.) LUCY. I think so. ALEX. Where d you get it? LUCY. Good will. ALEX. Oh, Lucy, gross. LUCY. What? JD. My cousin once found a twenty-dol lar bill in the pocket of a jacket she got at the thrift store. ALEX. What does that have to do with any thing? JD. I m just say ing ALEX (to LUCY, smugly). We re meet ing to night. I told you he would. LUCY. Who? Alex! Not that ran dom creeper you met on - line? ALEX. He s not a creep. And he s not ran dom. We have mu tual friends. LUCY. You don t know any thing about him. ALEX. Ex actly. That s why we re meet ing.

12 In the Com pany of Sin ners and Saints Act I JD. Re mem ber what hap pened last time? ALEX. Shut up, JD. LUCY. She s got a point. ALEX. He posted a pic ture. He s def i nitely not a creep. LUCY. Well there you go, cause, gosh, an Internet photo, that s re li able. ALEX. You re just jeal ous, Lucy. LUCY. Jeal ous? Of what? ALEX. Of me. Cause I m will ing to take a risk and you re not. LUCY. I take risks. ALEX. Yeah, right. Thrift store hats. JD. Lucy s the only one who dove off the high dive. ALEX. I m not talk ing about that kind of risk. (LUCY stares straight ahead, stone-faced.) JD. What kind of risk are you talk ing about? ALEX. She knows. LUCY. Why do you think break ing the rules makes you some how better than the rest of us? ALEX. I don t. But you do. LUCY. I do not! ALEX. Oh, you know you do, Lucy. LUCY. I think I know what I think, Alex. ALEX. Okay, okay. Fine. So, you ll come with me to - night? (LUCY does n t an swer right away.) JD. I ll go with you, Alex. LUCY. Where are you meet ing?

Act I In the Com pany of Sin ners and Saints 13 ALEX. At the MoviePlex. LUCY. I have to be home by mid night. ALEX. Tell your mom you re spend ing the night with me. JD. I don t have a cur few. LUCY. What are you go ing to tell your mom? ALEX. She and my dad are in Cancun. JD. I can come over. My mom won t care. (ALEX and LUCY ig nore JD.) ALEX. Well? LUCY (af ter a mo ment of in de ci sion). Okay. Just don t tell my mom your mom s not home. JD. So, what time are we go ing to meet him? (ALEX and LUCY ex change a look.) ALEX. It s just gonna be me and Lucy to night, JD. I don t want to over whelm the guy. JD. Oh come on! It s a movie thea tre. There ll be tons of peo ple. ALEX. Meet us there. Get your mom to drop you off. JD. You know she works the late shift. ALEX (her smile and tone are ar ti fi cially so lic i tous as she looks at JD in the rear view mir ror). Then, how about your dad? JD. Just for get it. LUCY. JD, I ll text you. JD. Gee, thanks. ALEX. So, did you get that at the thrift store, too?

14 In the Com pany of Sin ners and Saints Act I LUCY (fin ger ing her neck lace). This? No, it was my great-grand mother s. I found it in a box with a bunch of other old stuff. ALEX. What is it? LUCY. Her Saint Lucy medal. ALEX. Her what? LUCY. Her Saint Lucy medal. It s like her pa tron saint or some thing. I don t know, my mom ex plained it. It s a name thing. ALEX. Your great-grand mother was named Lucy, too? LUCY. Uh huh. ALEX. So maybe Saint Lucy s your pa tron saint. LUCY. Yeah, well, I don t think it s au to matic. (Sud denly no tic ing a store up ahead.) Hey, Alex, stop up there at the Film At tic, will you? I ve got to re turn this DVD. (ALEX pan to mimes chang ing lanes and pull ing into the Film Attic park ing lot.) CONNOR. Hey, why are we stop ping? We re gonna be late again. ALEX. No one ex cept you pays at ten tion to the first bell. JD, run this over to the drop box, will you? JD. Why me? ALEX. Cause if Lucy tries to run in those shoes, she ll break an an kle and then we re ally will be late. (She hands the DVD to JD who grudg ingly runs offstage.) LUCY. I read your poem in the pa per, Connor. CONNOR. You did? LUCY. Yeah, it was re ally good. That stuff about the po lar caps melt ing? I liked your met a phor.

Act I In the Com pany of Sin ners and Saints 15 ALEX. Ex cuse me. Maybe you could con tinue this ex cru ci - at ingly mind-numb ing con ver sa tion some other time? (CONNOR rolls his eyes and re turns to his ipod.) LUCY. Jeez, Alex. ALEX (uses the rear view mir ror to ap ply lip gloss, then turns to LUCY with a grin). My car, my rules! Hey, I m kid ding. I just wanted a chance to talk to you about JD be fore she co mes back. (She checks to make sure JD is no where near.) You heard what s go ing on, right? LUCY. No. What? ALEX. Her dad and the sec re tary? I mean, re ally, how un - orig i nal is that? Any way, there s gonna be a to tally messy di vorce. LUCY. How do you know all this? ALEX. My dad s law firm is rep re sent ing her mom. LUCY. Wow, poor JD. ALEX. I know. I feel re ally bad for her. Do you think she s been putt ing on weight? LUCY. What? No what kind of a ques tion is that? ALEX. It s just that some one like JD re ally can t af ford to get all fat. You know. (LUCY gives ALEX a look.) What? I m not try ing to be mean. You saw that You - Tube video. She has a ten dency. I m just try ing to pre - vent a di sas ter, okay? We re her friends. (JD co mes run ning back to the car and climbs in.) ALEX. What took you so long?

16 In the Com pany of Sin ners and Saints Act I JD. The stu pid re turn slot was jammed. I had to go all the way in side. Hey, guess what? There s a new guy work - ing. ALEX. Is he cute? JD. He was nice. ALEX. Oh. (She starts the car and reaches to turn on the ra dio. The song My Mean Side is play ing. Mu sic cue.) JD. Oooh! My Mean Side! I love this song. Turn it up. (LUCY reaches to turn up the vol ume on the ra dio. LUCY, ALEX and JD sing along.) (SONG: MY MEAN SIDE) My mean side, my mean side, oh what a keen side. To come up in a fight or perhaps just to spite. It comes out of nowhere, crawls up through my throat, it claws at my gums wearing a heavy black coat. It knows all the juice, it knows all the dirt; its main objective being solely to hurt. But shortly it ceases, shrinks back and deceases; the dirty deed is done. The battle s been won. Oh what a fun time my mean side has had And until the next time, I m left oh so sad. (As the song nears the end, CONNOR tries to be heard over their sing ing.) CONNOR. Alex. Alex. HEY ALEX! Pull over. There s a cop be hind you.

Act I In the Com pany of Sin ners and Saints 17 ALEX (checks the rear view mir ror and turns off the ra dio). Oh crap! Not again. Lucy! Slide over here and take the wheel. LUCY. Are you crazy? ALEX. I can t get an other ticket! LUCY. No! ALEX. Come on. I ll pay the ticket. I just can t lose my li - cense. LUCY. The cop will see us. ALEX. You can t see through these win dows. Please. (Three short bursts of a po lice si ren are heard, the kind that in di cates that the driver should pull over. ALEX pan to mimes pull ing over.) Lucy! You know I d do it for you. LUCY (mut ter ing as she ex changes places with ALEX). Oh! I can t be lieve I m even do ing this. (COP en ters. Be gins to walk slowly to ward the car.) JD. Lucy! Your seatbelt. Oh great. It s a lady cop. ALEX. We re screwed. COP. Ev ery thing okay in here? You seemed a bit re luc tant to pull over. LUCY. Yes, ma am, I was, um, look ing for a safe place out of the flow of traf fic, you know? COP. I see. And you are? LUCY. Lucy. Lucy Sullivan. COP. And is this your ve hi cle, Lucy Sullivan? LUCY. Um, no. No, ma am. I m just driv ing. It s my friend s car, ac tu ally. She, uh ALEX. I sprained my an kle yes ter day in vol ley ball prac - tice. The doc tor said

18 In the Company of Sinners and Saints Act I COP. Uh huh, I see. Where are you headed? LUCY. School. The high school. This is our carpool group. COP. Carpool. Re ally. Well, is n t that con sci en tious. (She shines her flash light at the oth ers in the car.) Not plan - ning to skip school are you? (JD and CONNOR shake their heads vig or ously.) Well, I don t want you to be late on my ac count. Look, the rea son I stopped you is be - cause your right brake light is out. You ll want to get that fixed. ALEX. That s it? LUCY. Yes, ma am. We ll take care of it. Right af ter school. Thank you. Thank you. COP. Just doin my job. You have a good morn ing. (The COP exits. LUCY and the others can t believe their good luck. Af ter a beat, JD s high-pitched gig gle breaks the ten sion and all four dis solve into laugh ter as LIGHTS FADE.)
