www.wickman-group.com Turning Pages The latest issue of our Turning Pages newsletter is hot off the press. Big thanks to everyone for your feedback on issue number one. We put that first issue together at the start of the summer and it seems crazy that we re already heading towards the back end of the year. We really don t know where the time goes. But, we re not complaining. A busy schedule is a sign of a growing and vibrant business. And because we serve all corners of the globe, there s always something going on. At any time, there can be trade shows in progress, investment initiatives being launched, sectors are restructuring and, of course, there s a constant process of change in manufacturing methods and standards. Keeping up to date is essential and this newsletter is our small contribution to keeping you up to date. We hope you enjoy the read. If you ve got any contributions for issue three, let us know, won t you? Welcome One of the privileges of being part of Wickman is the opportunity it gives us to meet engineers from around the globe. We ve seen remarkable projects, helped to solve problems and learned about emerging technologies. We ve made good friends on our travels. We ve introduced engineers to others and facilitated partnerships. We ve explored new ideas, seen genuine resourcefulness and we ve had a lot of laughs on the way. The world of metalworking is incredibly diverse and we re delighted to be a part of it. Owen Coyne and Chris Barrett enquiries@wickman-group.com Making excellent progress Congratulations are due to Scott Mainwaring, our design engineer. Read more on page 2.
Looking good, feeling upbeat Don t worry, this isn t a fashion column. But we are rather pleased with the way Wickman is looking right now. Around the world, the Wickman family is reporting an upturn in the market and there s plenty of optimism. Our dedication to the needs of the metal turning industry and our ability to offer genuine support and practical machinery is paying dividends. We ve no time to rest though. We ve got to maintain our focus to keep things heading in the right direction. That means constantly developing new products, building new facilities in China and ensuring that we re bang up to date with the very latest in cost-effective machinery and production methods. You ll find more about what we ve been working on in this edition. Enjoy the read. Wickman on wheels Making excellent progress Congratulations are due to Scott Mainwaring, our design engineer. Scott has just completed his first year of a university degree in engineering. The course required him to study and pass three modules and with Scott s application, he had no trouble sailing through. If you re on the road in the UK and spot our van, give us a wave. We ve just taken delivery of a new Citroën for service visits and general use, and we couldn t resist adding the logos of all the Wickman family brands to the vehicle s livery. At the moment, the van s looking immaculate, but it is a work vehicle. As the motorway miles add up through the winter, we might not be able to keep it quite so pristine. Scott s about to start the second year. We d like to offer our good wishes for the challenges he ll face in combining his studies with work. But we ve got confidence in Scott, and we re convinced he ll smash it.
Breaking ground in China Finally, the construction of the new facilities for European Turning Technologies in China is underway. And we ll confess that, as engineers, we have got a bit excited about the heavy earth-moving plant in use and the construction techniques being employed. There is a good way to go yet, but the new factory will have significant advantages over our current site. More space will be complemented by improved, purpose-designed services, allowing us to support the needs of even more customers. We re looking forward to being able to introduce even more engineers to the advantages of multispindle lathe production in dedicated new surroundings. Introducing the new Penta machine Mori-Say s latest model, the TMZ518CNC, represents one of the most significant developments in volume machining for 30 years. Mori-Say s smart design has eliminated much of the increased complexity of many modern sliding-head lathes. At a price-point roughly half that of other machines with similar capabilities, it s a fantastic way to achieve high outputs and outstanding precision with reduced manpower and for a modest investment. What s more, the Penta has been designed to suit the needs of a younger workforce. It s a full CNC operated machine, easy to program with simple push-button operation, super quick to set-up with no Cam changes and capable of lights-out operation. A full (up to 31 axis) Fanuc 31i controlled machine Can run bent shank tapping Super precision & accuracy Hirth coupling 7,500kg machine 5 spindles 8,000 RPM, C axis 5 CNC cross slides 2 x 2 axis, 2 x 3 axis and cut off slide 5 CNC long slides with driven capability Davenport or Schutte collets Built in bar loader up to 19mm (puller for up to 25mm) High-pressure coolant 70 bar, 8 bar standard coolant Coolant refrigeration and filtration Built in fire-suppression unit Air filtration unit Minimum 1 second cycle time 0.5 second index time Machine ready for lights out running The whole machine is built to be practical, stable and adaptable to the production of a wide variety of components. If you d like to learn more about producing with a Penta machine, get in touch. We d love to arrange a demo.
Focus on ACW If you re ready to make the step up to multispindle capability, Wickman s ACW range is ideal. With both Drive Technology and CNC options there s a machine to suit any need. The ACW is an efficient and economical multispindle machine. ACW CNC Range Wickman s CNC gives you a cutting-edge lathe at an affordable price point. These machines are real workhorses, known for their longevity and easy maintenance. You ll benefit not only from improved accuracy but also from reduced set-up and cycle times and reduced downtime. Built on our tried and tested multispindle machine platform, these models use the strength of mechanical slides in the lower stations and CNC in the upper stations. The result is a versatile machine with all the flexibility you need. A range of capacities from 25mm up to 57mm, the latest control systems, simple programming, and the ability to machine difficult materials, mean these machines deliver on every level. ACW Servo Range These great value multispindle lathes enable the user to take advantage of advanced control and AC drive technology without having to undergo intensive re-training of operators and setters. All tooling and attachments used on existing Wickman machines are interchangeable with our ACW Servo lathes. Upgrading legacy equipment can now be carried out economically and without huge disruption. Find out more at www.wickman-group.com/product/acw-servo-range Spare parts? No problem! Sterling has been trading at very low levels, but the rising costs of imports could push up UK inflation to rates where the Bank of England increases interest rates. Such a move would strengthen the pound, but any changes are likely to be small, at least initially. Whatever happens, in the near future, with Sterling rates so low, there s no time like the present to buy British goods. If you re thinking of taking advantage of Sterling s weakness, call us or email enquiries@wickman-group.com Get ready for the future of metalworking at EMO Hannover The Tajmac Group is looking forward to welcoming visitors to its stand B08, in Hall 17 at the upcoming EMO Hannover event. The show runs from 18 to 23 September at the city s Exhibition Grounds and is widely regarded as the world s premier trade fair for the metalworking sector. Tajmac will be in excellent company. There are more than 2,000 exhibitors from all corners of the globe, and as well as the trade stands, there will be a full conference programme and an impressive list of keynote speakers. It s four years since the last EMO, and reflecting the pace of change, this event s focus will be on Connecting Systems for Intelligent Production. It s a show that anyone with a serious interest in metalworking should attend.
