Hasegawa, E05 Fourth Vice Chairman Subject: Report from E05 Division III E5.31 Terminology and Editorial (John Hall, Chairman). Most work since December has been part of an exercise focused on the Annex of ASTM E 176, Terminology of Fire Standards, where definitions found in other E5 documents are listed. A task group consisting of Marcelo Hirschler, Ineke Van Zeeland, and the chairman are working through this annex with the goal of achieving greater harmonization and less unnecessary variation in definitions. A ballot went out in early 2007 as part of this exercise with proposed new or revised definitions for E176. Negatives were received and will be addressed at the June meeting. We also will discuss additional ballot items for this initiative and consider letters to other E5 subcommittees proposing harmonization actions for them to consider taking. The draft document on handling uncertainty, prepared by Marc Janssens as a draft standard for E5.31 and E5.91, has been passed as a standard and was one of two new E5 documents featured in the ASTM Annual Report in the June issue of Standardization News. With regard to ISO TC92, the subcommittee also will review the status of the document from their WG8 terminology subcommittee.

E5.32 Research (Fred Fisher, Chairman) Fred Fisher has resigned as Chairman of E5.32. Harry Hasegawa has been asked to serve out his term. Fred Fisher and Howard Stacey have withdrawn their symposium on the wildland/urban fire interface. However, Art Parker and Paul Shipp have submitted a proposal for a symposium entitled Advances in the State of the Art of Fire Testing, to be presented on Monday December 8, 2008. Please see the attached detailed description. E5.33 Fire Safety Engineering (Daniel Gemeny, Chairman) There was one subcommittee ballot item, on E1776, which had one negative. It s something that can be handled editorially. The task group working on Data for Fire Models will have a number of new data items that need to be developed and started through the ballot process. SFPE has formed a new committee to write a guide for the use of fire models. Their work will extend our current Guide for the Use and Limitations of Deterministic Fire Models. SFPE is also going through a strategic planning cycle which will likely identify areas where E5.33 can take up some new work that is complementary to SFPE future document development. E5.36 Membership (Richard Gebhart, Chairman) Report will be presented at Executive subcommittee. E5.37 Honors, Awards, and Nominations (Thomas Fritz, Chairman) Awards Presented at the June, 2006, Meeting Executive Subcommittee In June, 2005, the ASTM E05.37 Honors, Awards and Nominations Subcommittee nominated the following members for the Executive Committee of ASTM Committee E05 for two-year terms of office commencing January 1, 2006: Chairman - Paul Shipp (P) USG Co.
