WHY SINGAPORE? WHY DAVIES COLLISON CAVE? An island of innovation, Singapore has quickly grown into a sophisticated research and development hub for both local and multinational businesses. As evidence of this, Singapore recently achieved the following rankings: 1st in the world in terms of economic globalisation i ; 1st in Asia and 4th in the world for efficient IP systems ii ; 2nd (for the 5th year in a row) in the latest Global Competitiveness Report iii ; and 3rd in the world for highest GDP per capita adjusting for purchasing power parity (a realistic indicator for standard of living) iv. These impressive achievements have been underpinned by the Singaporean Government s investment in local manufacturing and R & D. For example, over the last decade, the Singaporean Government has invested around 6 billion dollars into its Science and Technology Plan v. So, it s not surprising that Singapore has become an essential place for securing IP rights. A snapshot of Singapore s top patent filers for 2017 is shown below. Singapore is also an important gateway to the ASEAN region one of the largest economic zones in the world, larger than EU in population. As a measure of relative importance in the ASEAN region, Singapore has 48.4% Gross Domestic Product (GDP) nominal per capita. Singapore is a member of ASPEC. As such, an allowed Singapore application can be used to expedite Examination of a corresponding application filed in any one of the other ASEAN countries. This can be an important tool for reducing the complication and cost of patent prosecution. Due to its fast-growing IP driven economy and strong monetary prospects, Singapore has the potential to add value to your business and is a key player in the ASEAN market.
