What does that mean? Color is perception Every Person with normal sight can see the same color, but their perception of the color can change how it is interpreted.

Perception Is this swatch green? Or is it blue?

Perception Is swatch #2 green? Or is it blue?

In an experiment by Optical Express of 1,000 participants, 64% stated that the swatch above was green, while 32% believed it to be blue.

When the same 1,000 participants were asked what color swatch #2 was, over 90% stated that it was green.

So what? The actual RGB values of the swatch are 2 red, 123 green, and 118 blue. Meaning that the swatch is technically green. The values are so close, that your perception of the color is correct whether you saw it as green or blue.

Color Consistency In an effort to control the individual perceptions, we all go through a proofing process to ensure that the color we expect comes through in the production process.

Which applications typically utilize color?

Appliqué: two versions of appliqué exist direct applied, which uses fabric/or embellishments and stitching to create an image typically on textiles or leather; or, a design created using fabric and/or embellishments created in a patch and glued or stitched to textiles or leather

Embroidery: text or image created/digitized using thread or yarn. Designs are typically applied to apparel but may include bags or textiles and can be quite small or utilize a full back design with thousands and thousands of stitches.

Heat Transfer: an image which is developed in reverse and uses a printed image on paper, which is then applied with heat directly to a substrate, typically multicolor design. Also available in solid vinyl (pre-set color selections).

Digital Printing: images that are created using a multicolor printer, which may or may not include white print capabilities, applied directly to a substrate. Ideal for lower volume printing due to lower set up costs

Offset Printing: this printing process utilizes etched metal plates that apply ink into a sheet of paper, ideal for higher volume printing (2,000+ identical copies)

Flexographic Ink: this printing process utilizes a flexible relief plate, it is a modern version of the letterpress which can be used for printing on almost any type substrate

Sublimation: similar to heat transfer, sublimation uses a multi-color reverse printed sheet. Application is limited to polyester for the most precise color detail. Blended fabrics work best, but color may appear different due to the absorption process.

Screen printing: uses reverse artwork and mesh screens developed for each color to apply direct color printing to a variety of substrates; plastics, vinyl and textiles are most common

Pad Printing: a direct print process similar to screen printing, which utilizes a pliable rubber head to print directly on uneven, imperfect or round surfaces/products

Enamel Paint: paint applied directly onto recessed grooves, primarily used in medal work. Process involves an extended drying period between colors and layers used to created the decoration
