(suggested) BINDING FABRIC MKR-3888 (Fabric A) (included) HALF SQUARE TRIANGLE CONSTRUCTION Sew all rights sides together with ¼"seam allowance. cutting directions ¼" seam allowances are included. Six (6) 2 ½" 15 ½" Strips from fabric A Three (3) 7 ⅞" Squares from fabric A One (1) 14 ½" x 35 ½" Rectangle from fabric B Three (3) 2 ½" 15 ½" Strips from fabric B Two (2) 2 ½" 21 ½" Strips from fabric B Two (2) 7 ⅞" Squares from fabric B Six (6) 3" 21 ½" Strips from fabric C Three (3) 7 ⅞" Squares from fabric C Four (4) 7 ⅞" Squares from fabric D Three (3) 3" 21 ½" Strips from fabric D Six (6) 2 ½" 5 ½" Strips from fabric E Start with the construction of the HST To accomplish the HST construction use the 7 ⅞" squares from fabrics A, B, C, D, I, L, N and H. Using a water-soluble marker or a pencil, mark a diagonal line across the wrong side of all the mentioned fabric squares (DIAGRAM 1) Leave the H squares unmarked. Mark here DIAGRAM 1
Place one of the marked squares, right sides together with an unmarked Fabric square (H). Sew ¼" on both sides of the marked line. Cut piece in half along the drawn line. Press seams open and trim half-square triangles to 4" square. Pair up the rest of the marked squares always with the unmarked squares (Fabric H). Repeat to make a total of 39 half-square triangles. AH BH DH BH Sew here Cut here DIAGRAM 3 DIAGRAM 2 To finish this piece of the quilt take the template letters from fabric G and appliqué them on top of the B rectangle, forming the word MAKER with the R backwards. Sew the letters as close to the edge as able. AH BH CH DH IH LH NH 6 4 5 7 7 5 5 Now, that all the HST are sewn together it is time to start putting the quilt pieces together in order to complete the quilt top. For the first piece of the quilt top take two AH HST, two DH HST, four BH HTS and one 14½" x 35 1/2" rectangle from fabric B. Sew here Attach the AH HST to the DH HST and the BH HST to another BH HST. DIAGRAM 4 Follow the DIAGRAM 3 for fabric placement. Attach the AH/DH on top of the BH/BH, take the B rectangle and attach it under. Attach the remaining BH/BH and AH/DH under the previously sewn piece.
For the second piece of the quilt top take four AH HST, five DH HST, five CH HTS, seven IH HST, five NH HTS, five LH HTS and five 7 1/2" squares from fabric H. Start attaching the squares together making nine rows of four units each. Follow the diagram below for fabric placement, notice that a 1 ½" 21 ½" G strip should be in between of every other patchy printed strip. Repeat this same block one more time. Follow the diagram below for fabric placement. DIAGRAM 6 There is one more block combination that needs to be made in order to complete the quilt top. For the first strip attachment take one 2 1/2" x 15 1/2" strip from fabric B, one 2 ½" 5 ½" Strip from fabric F and one 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" strip from fabric G. Sew these strips together in the order FGB, set aside. DIAGRAM 5 The next step will be a block and in order to complete it there are some strips that need to be attached first. For the first strip attachment take one 2 1/2" x 15 1/2" strip from fabric A, one 2 ½" 5 ½" Strip from fabric E and one 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" strip from fabric G. Sew this strips together in the order EGA, set aside. Take one 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" strip from fabric J, one 3 ½" 15 ½" Strip from fabric I and one 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" strip from fabric G. Sew this strips together in the order IGJ, set aside. Take one 5 ½" 13 ½"strip from fabric M, one 5 ½" 7½" Strip from fabric K and one 1 1/2" x 5 1/2" strip from fabric G. Take one 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" strip from fabric J, one 3 ½" 15 ½" Strip from fabric L and one 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" strip from fabric G. Sew these strips together in the order LGJ, set aside. Take one 5 ½" 13 ½"strip from fabric N, one 5 ½" 7½" Strip from fabric K and one 1 1/2" x 5 1/2" strip from fabric G. Sew these strips together in the order NGM, set aside. At this point all the strips needed for the block are sewn together so take one 3" 21 ½" Strips from fabric D and six 1 ½" 21 ½" Strips from fabric G. Start attaching the strips together on the long side starting with a 1 ½" 21 ½" Strip from fabric G. Follow the diagram below for fabric placement, notice that a 1 ½" 21 ½" G strip should be in between of every other patchy printed strip. Sew this strips together in the order KGM, set aside. At this point all the strips needed for the block are sewn together so take one 3" 21 ½" Strips from fabric C and six 1 ½" 21 ½" Strips from fabric G. Start attaching the strips together on the long side starting with a 1 ½" 21 ½" Strip from fabric G. DIAGRAM 7
Now that you are done with the blocks, attach them together. The second block should be in between the first two blocks. assembling the top Follow the cover photo to help you in the arrangement of the quilt top. Attach the Maker column next to the blocks column and then attach the HTS column to the other side of the blocks column. Almost done with the quilt top construction, the last step will be attaching the long strips that were set aside to the top and bottom of the quilt top. DIAGRAM 8 Make four EGA strips and two FGB, Take the remaining strips from fabrics C, D and G. Now you are making groups with the strips, sewing them in the same order that you did for the blocks in the previous steps. Make four G-EGA-G-C-G and two G-FGB-G-D-G. Take two G-EGA-G-C-G piece and attach one G-FGB- G-D-G in between them in order to create a long strip for the top of the quilt. Repeat another long strip in the same order for the bottom of this quilt. Set aside DIAGRAM 9
quilt assembly Sew rights sides together. Place BACKING FABRIC on a large surface wrong side up. Stretch it with masking tape against that surface. Place BATTING on top of backing fabric. Press them together to form a crease. Using this crease as the stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding with right sides together (you can help yourself marking with a pencil if the crease is difficult to see). Trim seam to ¼" and press open. Complete the sewing. Turn binding to back of the quilt, turn raw edge inside and stitch by hand using blind stitch. Place TOP on top of the batting with right side facing up. Smooth away wrinkles using your hands. Pin all layers together and baste with basting thread, using long stitches. You can also use safety pins to join the layers. DIAGRAM B1 Stop stitching here DIAGRAM B2 Machine or hand quilt starting at the center and working towards the corners. Remember that quilting motives are a matter of personal preference. Have fun choosing yours! DIAGRAM B3 fold 45 After you finished, trim excess of any fabric or batting, squaring the quilt to proceed to bind it. BINDING Sew rights sides together. Cut enough strips 1½" wide by the width of the fabric A to make a final strip 288" long. Start sewing the binding strip in the middle of one of the sides of the quilt, placing the strip right side down and leaving an approximated 5" tail. Sew with ¼" seam allowance (using straight stitch), aligning the strip s raw edge with the quilt top s raw edge. Stop stitching ¼" before the edge of the quilt (DI- AGRAM B 1). Clip the threads. Remove the quilt from under the machine presser foot. Fold the strip in a motion of 45 and upward, pressing with your fingers (DIAGRAM B2). Hold this fold with your finger, bring the strip down in line with the next edge, making a horizontal fold that aligns with the top edge of the quilt (DIAGRAM B3). Start sewing at ¼" of the border, stitching all the layers. Do the same in the four corners of the quilt. Stop stitching before you reach the last 5 or 6 inches. Cut the threads and remove the quilt from under the machine presser foot. Lay the loose ends of the binding flat along the quilt edge, folding the ends back on themselves where they meet.
