PORTUGUESE ASSOCIATION OF SPACE INDUSTRIES 1

Proespaço is a non-profit organization whose Mission is to promote Portuguese Industry Space activities, within National authorities and next to Major International bodies 2

Main Objectives Promote activities in Portugal related to space Be a representative organization, acting as an intermediary and interface with the public administration and national and international organizations in all aspects related to space Work at all government levels (local, regional, national and supra-national) to achieve a substantial increase in the Portuguese industry participation in space-related activities at a National, European and Global level Provide expert information on the space industry in Portugal and on all related research, development and support programmes Provide a single voice to represent the space Portuguese industry Extend and strengthen cooperation between companies, universities and state research institutes in R&D activities Contribute on studies, analyses and viewpoints to organizations responsible for drawing up Portugal s space policy and related industrial development plans Represent the Portuguese space industry at international fairs & exhibitions. 3

Activities & Achievements Active dialogue with the Portuguese President, Ministers of Science, Economy and Environment, several Secretaries of State (Innovation, Transports, etc), and the Portuguese Parliament concerning the Portuguese space policy, with a focus on: Proposals for a Portuguese Space Programme & definition of a long-term Space Policy Proposals for the definition of a Development Plan for the Portuguese Space Industry Creation of a catalogue of the capabilities of the Portuguese Space Industry Promotion joint participation at International events Promoting regular meetings among members Organizing presentations to foreign space research delegations Organizing local informative meetings and events Publishing communication and promotional materials Cooperating with international organizations that have similar objectives Foster collaboration between Space, Aeronautic & Defence companies in order to create a strong ASD sector in Portugal 4

Portuguese Space Sector Portugal is a full member of ESA since December 2000. This key moment fostered the setting up of a renewed fast growing ASD area in Portugal led by several young and very ambitious SW companies and followed by emerging SMEs focused in tooling, instrument, etc Portuguese Space Industry employs over 500 very high skilled engineers & scientists with strong backgrounds in Aeronautics, Physics, Math and IT Since 2000, more than 45 portuguese institutions were involved in ESA activities. Till now, Portugal achieved over 108% geo-return on the Galileo System development ESA s recognition of the good performance achieved by the Portuguese space industry led Portuguese companies to lead several strategic contracts for European Entities such as EUMETSAT, European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), Eurocontrol, European Defence Agency (EDA), as to establish strong ties with major International Industry players (AIRBUS MILITARY, EADS, Lockheed Martin, Astrium, Thales, ) 5
