You will learn to trace images on freezer paper, attach it to a screen, and print on paper and fabric. Price includes 6 hours of instruction and all materials. Each class will be centered around an artist or particular culture. Children will learn about the topic and then create a piece of art that relates to the topic covered that class. Some examples of projects include Paul Klee Kats, Egyptian Masks, Andy Warhol prints. Parents are encouraged to stay and play during class time. About the Instructor: Chelsi Primavero is a native of Tucker County and grew up in Parsons. She graduated from Davis & Elkins College in 2014 with degrees in History and Art Education, with a minor in Political Science. She recently earned her Masters degree in Special Education from WVU in May 2016. This is a 2 day class. Discover the world of self glazing clay. This type of clay has been used from the time of the ancient Egyptians. It is perfect for small items and beads. class will cover making clay, forming and firing. You can make jewelry or small sculptures. At the end of the day your beads will be fired in the kiln so that the following day they are ready to use. Once the beads have been fired, all the sharp edges may need to be removed so you will spend some time sanding and finishing. Then all the finished beads can be made into items of jewelry using various methods. Nicole Rose recently moved to Thomas from Taos, New Mexico. Nicole taught at the International Folk Art Museum in Santa Fe, NM and assisted artists in NM for over a decade. She has a BFA in ceramics and has taught to kids of all ages. +++++++++++++++++++++++++ Michael Doig June 2016 Residency Michael Doig is returning for a second residency starting with his group show at the B&L during ArtSpring. A native of Elkins, Doig teaches art entrepreneurship, drawing, painting and design at Davis & Elkins. He also is the Arts and Crafts coordinator at the Augusta Heritage Center of Davis & Elkins College, and served as the master teacher for the visual arts at the Governor s School for the Arts on the D&E campus from 2011-2013. Michael highly values the accessibility of arts education to all growing up in West Virginia, and providing opportunities for emerging artists to develop their craft and art careers.
As an artist, Doig works in many mediums, including encaustic and spray paint, but his primary medium is oil paint. The Thomas Series, large scale oil paintings inspired by historical photographs of Thomas, was created during his 2015 residency and has been a hit with the community and area visitors. You can now see prints of the Thomas Series in many businesses throughout the state, and prints are available for sale at the B&L. His paintings are also exhibited throughout the state, including Morgantown at the Iron Horse Tavern and and in Charleston. He holds an M.F.A. from The State University of New York, and a B.F.A. from West Virginia State University. Encaustic Painting Workshops ($35 per class, or $60 for both) When: June 25, June 26 10am-12pm Register: Call the Gallery at 304-657-4572 or email buxtongallery@yhaoo.com This 2 day encaustic class is suitable for students new to this exciting medium. You will be introduced to the basics of encaustic painting, which is the ancient art of painting with molten beeswax. You will explore various techniques, including incorporating photos and collage into your painting. Price includes 3 panels, brushes, and encaustic materials. Price includes: all materials including canvases and open studio time during class days. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Jamie Lester July Residency The B&L is honored to host Jamie Lester for a residency in July. He will be teaching three workshops, as well as participating in a group show at the B&L during ArtSpring. Jamie and Francisco Amaya will also be performing at the B&L Sunday May 29 th at 6 pm during our Artist Appreciation party. Jamie Lester was born in Oceana, West Virginia, a small mining town in Wyoming County. After graduating from West Virginia University in 1997, with a Bachelor s of Fine Arts, he formed Lester Sculpture, specializing in bronze monument sculpture and
fine artwork. In 2012 Lester created Vandalia Bronze LLC., further expanding his art team. In 2003, Lester designed the obverse side of the West Virginia State Commemorative Quarter, depicting a panoramic view of the New River Gorge Bridge. Lester s award winning bronze sculpture has shown in galleries in West Virginia and The Society of Fine Arts and Crafts in Boston, Massachusetts. His experience in the monumental bronze industry is specialized in portraiture and figurative sculpture. Since 1997, Jamie has sculpted thousands of basrelief portraits and has completed several large scale bronze statues. Lester s bronze work is heavily influenced by Italian Baroque sculpture. His bronze figures possess a dynamic sensitivity with exquisite detail. Lester s fine art work takes this baroque realism and balances it with the surreal juxtaposition of objects, influenced by Rene Magritte. http://vandaliabronze.com/ Beginning Sculpture Portrait Bust Workshop ($100 per class) When: July 9 th and July 10 th 9 am 1pm Registration: Call the Gallery at 304-657-4572 or email buxtongallery@yhaoo.com Blocking in overall shapes, bone landmarks and major muscle groups, students will work towards capturing the likeness of a model or photograph. Overall forms will be blocked in through observation of shapes, rhythms and interconnecting commensurate planes, leading to a simplified yet integrated portrait sketch. Price includes instruction and free studio time during gallery hours for days of class registration. Students can purchase a 25 lb of clay for $20.00. Please request clay at least 2 weeks before class. If you re not a beginner, join us to strengthen your design skills and take your
paintings to the next level. This workshop will cover equally the steps of designing, drawing, and painting. Participants will learn to create strong compositions, execute a solid underlying sketch, draw typography, and paint effectively. Weather permitting, students will explore the unique architecture and landscape of Thomas for their inspiration.
