issue 3, 2010 Ghouly News Why does a witch ride a broom? The vacuum cleaner s power is cord is too short. of the witch What terrible thing will she do next? Teachers turned into frogs. Children EATEN! Innocent dogs patted. Newts eyes not safe, toads without toes... the Ghouly News has learned that Witch Maralyn is on a terrifying warpath. She s told close friends she is desperate not to be forced to drink pupils concoctions if they bring in 2000 tombolas. Speaking only after we promised not to name them, the friends say the wickedlyfunny witch is worried she will be made to drink Milo and mud, which she has been afraid of since she was a girl, when her mother would force her to drink it so Maralyn s bones would grow strong and she could grow up to be a champion weightlifter, just like mummy. But with two weeks to go, pupils will have to work extra hard to provide the necessary tomobolas currently another 1700 are needed. Who knows what may happen?

Ghouly News Nicholson St PS Balmain East Saskia, 9 I m looking forward to dressing up because I just love the scary costumes. Thomas, 6 I was looking forward to the box maze because it s really scary and I like to get used to the dark. But I can t come (so that s the scariest thing about Halloween). Petrifying Pinatas Be among the first to smash the petrifying piñatas, hanging threateningly, hiding their treasures within. These are not your average piñatas, they are made of paper mache and decorated to be as scary as possible. What can be hiding inside? Annabelle, 8 I m looking forward to seeing everyone in their Halloween clothes because everyone looks really good. The Touchy Feely Due to popular demand The Touchy Feely is back at Nicholson St. it s more horrible, more slimy, and as you enter the dank, dark room, the only light is a blue light that makes your teeth look extremely strange. How you can get involved: Tombolas, bake a cake for the cake walk (to be delivered on Saturday, October 30), prepare your costume, help source or donate a prize (at least one per family) and sign up for two shifts or more per family to work on the day of the festival. Please contact the head witches - Karen Morton, Natanya Shearer, Nicole Osborne, Kerry Guthrie, Di Gilhawley For editorial contributions to Ghouly News, contact Eli Martel at elimartel@gmail.com

BE WARe B E THERE Sofie, 11 I m looking forward to hanging out with my friends and dressing up. Carys, 10. I m looking forward to the lollies. Max, 7 I m looking forward to the Tombola jars, because are fun and they taste nice. Kate, 10 I m looking forward to going for the first time, and dressing up and eating lots of lollies. Hanging Bats No Halloween Festival would be truly haunted without a swarm of bats flying about. These cardboard creatures look terrifically lifelike dangling from the trees -- we need everyone to make at least one bat to decorate the school. Materials Toilet tissue tube Black poster paint and brushes Black poster board or similar Googly eyes or painted on eyes Black felt (optional) Elastic cording Stapler Instructions For each bat, cut out two triangular ears from one end of a toilet tissue tube. Next, flatten the other end and staple it shut about 1 inch from the bottom. Cut a crescent shape in the stapled end to form the bat s tail. Paint the tube black and let it dry. Next, cut out a wing shape from a 1-foot-long strip of black poster board. (For a more hair-raising look, first glue a veneer of black felt to the poster board.) Staple the wings to the bat s body. Glue on googly eyes. or paint them on Finally, staple the elastic cord to the bat s back at the balance point, then bring the creature to school.

Ghouly News FIENDISH FOOD Nicholson St PS Balmain East Blood and Guts with Eyeballs 1 package green spinach pasta 1 jar spaghetti sauce stuffed Spanish olives Boil pasta according to package instructions. Heat spaghetti spaghetti sauce. Cut olives in half to make eyeballs and place on top of the blood and guts. Bloody Popcorn 1 package popping corn (can be bought at the supermarket) Melted butter salt paprika Pop your popping corn any way you like (pan, air, microwave). Next pour into large mixing bowl and pour in the melted butter, stirring constantly to mix well. Then shake some salt and paprika and stir some more so the popcorn turns red. Really creepy and cool! Costume Parade Get dressed up. Get your mum to dress up. Dress up your spooky pooch. We don t want to recognise you. And the scarier you are the greater your chance of winning the coveted Nicho Halloween Festival Costume Trophy. A real trophy! And there are several categories so watch out for more information in Ghouly News. Monster Mash Monster Mash is an institution at Nicholson Street PS Halloween Festival! For years the Oke family got scary and sawed, bandaged, scarred and generally doctored Nicho students before wheeling them around in a wheelchair! And this year promises to be just as scary with a new edge, and new management! The Shearer family are locked away planning this year s monster mash. What will they come up with next? the blog of DOOM Don t forget to write in the Halloween blog - you can access it via your DET Portal Kidspace page. Check out what the students wrote during the holidays about their feelings amid the buzz of Halloween preparations - and there ll be more in the lead-up to the Halloween Festival. The blog is a great place for all students to voice their excitement and their ideas. The Halloween fete is about Halloween. Halloween is spooky and freaky. You can go on a Tsunami and you can win prizes, like lollies, toys and artworks. You can go through a maze, you can get to stick your hand in slime and pull out eyeballs. And you can stick your hand in pasta and get out a real slug. I love the Halloween fete. It s the best. Gus, Sealions.

A building site is eating Nicholson Street School. Shrouded in white, fenced in a mysterious way, the site has taken over a giant slice of school. Every week there s a bigger empty space within. Over the holidays, an entire classroom disappeared - and reappeared on the other side of the school grounds. Now, the cottage is vanishing, bit by bit. How can a classroom jump by itself? How can a building disappear slowly, as though a giant is taking bites out of it, nibbling away at it, each weekend while the students are away? Could it be Maralyn, incensed by the appearance of Gwendolyn, bewitching the building site, kapowing the classroom with her spells? Principal Ms Proud has her suspicions. She s unstoppable. Or could it be Gwendolyn, upset that Maralyn said her face looked like a cat s bum? The mystery deepens. In the middle of the night, I was in the garden. Then I heard a scary noise. It was zombies. They broke the garden fence. They chased me up to my bedroom. Then they got so close to me that they killed me. I was dead a very long time. Later, I came alive again, then I got a knife from the kitchen and killed the zombies. After they were all dead, I got a book and went to bed. By Luca Sarkis. Once upon a time there was a spooky car, and in the car was a vampire, and then the car had a ghost in it. How could that be?
