Question#9: National vs. CA Career Clusters 1 Running head: NATIONAL VS. CA CAREER CLUSTERS VS DL5: Comprehensive Examination Questions Question #9: Comparing National Career Clusters to California s Career Clusters William Bennett CSUSB EVOC 638: Critical Issues in Career & Technical Education February 8, 2009

Question#9: National vs. CA Career Clusters 2 Question 9 List the national Service area clusters in Career and Technical (Vocational) education, then align and compare it to California s system. Career clusters are groupings of occupations and industries that can be used as an organizing tool for curriculum deign. California has identified 15 California Industry Sectors that are similar to the 16 national career clusters but that specifically reflect the California economy. Each industry sector contains a number of more specific career pathways, totaling 58 all together, that are aligned to current and future California employment opportunities. The pathways are formulated by grouping professions that require similar talents, knowledge and skills (Lufkin, 2008). The sectors and pathways are an integral part of education reform initiatives, and they help to make academics relevant. The 15 industry sectors are: Agriculture and Natural Resources; Arts, Media and Entertainment; Building Trades and ; Energy and Utilities; Engineering and Design; Fashion and Interiors; Finance and Business; Health and Human ; Hospitality, Tourism and Recreation; Manufacturing and Product Development; Public and Private Education ; Public ; Retail and Wholesale Trade; Transportation; and Information Technology (ACTE, 2009). California believes that Career Clusters provide the infrastructure for a seamless educational transition between all learner levels. The state also sees Career Clusters as a career guidance tool, a platform to organize instruction and sequences of courses around, and a way to improve the quality of CTE. In order to effectively implement Career Clusters, California has adopted a state policy that supports Career Clusters and has integrated them into the state plan. In addition, the state has passed a resolution in support of Career Clusters. California is also using

Question#9: National vs. CA Career Clusters 3 strategies to directly implement Career Clusters. The state now requires local Perkins plans to incorporate Career Clusters and all accountability information is collected by Career Clusters. Several delivery methods are being used to implement and deliver Career Clusters, including career academies, magnet schools and charter schools. California, however, names their Career Clusters differently (State Profile for California, 2009).
