A) Adjustments Layers Palette Alters an aspect of your photo on a separate layer. Effects can be removed at any time with no ill affect to the original image. Adjustment Layers offer more flexibility for color editing images. B) Layers Palette The Layers palette is the Grand Central Station for managing layers. Think of Photoshop layers as sheets of acetate, similar to those clear plastic sheets used with overhead projectors. You draw different elements on the various layers - what you draw on one doesn t affect the others. You can place elements on separate layers, yet show them together to create a combination image, or composite. You can also add, delete, or rearrange layers. And you can also adjust how opaque or transparent the element on the layer is, as well as change the way the colors between layers interact (blend modes). C) Variations The Variations command lets you adjust the color balance, contrast, and saturation of an image by showing you thumbnails of alternatives. This command is most useful for average-key images that don t require precise color adjustments. G) Levels Adjusting your image s levels allows you to move and stretch the brightness, contrast, and tonal range of an image. H) History Palette Shows the list of steps taken to create the image that you are currently working on. The History palette helps you correct errors (by storing what you ve done to a file previously) and allows you to go back to a point before a particular edit was made simply by clicking on the appropriate step. I) Swatches Palette Allows you to select pre-made swatches of color. (Think of it as cans of paint already mixed and on your shelf.) J) Paths Palette The Paths palette in Photoshop is used for saving, selecting and duplicating path information. D) Tool Palette Where are your essential Photoshop tools are stored! E) Filter list Shows the list of filters available for you to work with in your image. A filter is a particular effect that can be applied to an image or part of an image. Filters can be fairly simple effects used to mimic traditional photographic filters (which are pieces of colored glass or gelatin placed over the lens to absorb specific wavelengths of light) or they can be complex programs used to create painterly effects. F) Curves Allows you to control your color changes precisely and from the entire tonal spectrum.
