Besides trnsceiver nd computer, ll you need is terminl node controller (TNC). A TNC converts pckets udio nes nd vice vers s one its tsks. This trnsceiver hs built-in TNC. A vriety pcket pplictions developed by hms include pcket bulletin bord systems (PBBSs). PBBSs re creted nd mintined by volunteers clled System perrs (Sysp). You my ccess one your locl PBBSs send e-mil, downlod file, or obtin vrious useful informtion. Thousnds PBBSs, which hve formed worldwide network, rely e-mil its intended destintion round world. PBBS you ccess locl PBBS for first time, you ten need register s new user. After you re successfully registered, it will n be vilble s your home PBBS. PERATING TNC This trnsceiver hs built-in TNC which conforms AX.25 procol. This procol is used for communictions between TNCs. The TNC ccepts dt from your personl computer nd ssembles it in pckets. It n converts pckets udio nes which trnsceiver cn trnsmit. The TNC lso tkes udio nes from trnsceiver, converts m dt for computer, nd checks for errors in dt. The TNC minly functions in Commnd or Converse mode. irst lern difference between se two modes. Commnd mode you select Pcket mode, TNC enters this mode. A cmd: prompt ppers on computer screen. You cn type commnds from computer keybord chnge settings on TNC. in Converse mode, press [Ctrl]+[C] on keybord resre Commnd mode. Converse mode The TNC enters this mode when linkge with trget sttion is estblished. n computer keybord, type n pproprite commnd nd if necessry messge, n press [Enter] or [Return]. Wht you type is converted in pckets nd trnsmitted over ir. in Commnd mode, type CNVERSE resre Converse mode; you cn lso type CNV or K insted. or commnds supported by built-in TNC, see TNC CMMANDS LIST on pge 41. The built-in TNC could be umticlly reinitited when its mlfunction is detected; this does not designte tht trnsceiver is defective. To distinguish your vrious sttions or nodes, you cn hve up 15 Secondry Sttion IDentifiers (SSIDs); ex. WD6BQD-1 WD6BQD- 15. You lwys hve put dsh between your cll sign nd SSID number. Pcket opertion, esily ffected by trnsmit nd receive conditions, requires full-scle S-meter reding for relible communiction. SELECTING DATA BAND This trnsceiver is cpble receiving pcket dt on one bnd (dt bnd) while receiving udio on or bnd. In order use built-in TNC, ccess Menu 1 6 1 (DATA BAND) nd select bnd A or B s dt bnd for receiving or trnsmitting pckets. indictes current dt bnd; defult is bnd A. DCD SENSE You cn lso select method for inhibiting built-in TNC from trnsmitting. Access Menu 1 6 2 (DCD SENSE) nd select one two methods. The defult is DATA (RX) BAND. DATA (RX) BAND A AND B BANDS The TNC does not trnsmit when signls re present on dt bnd ( ) or RX dt bnd ( ). The TNC does not trnsmit when signls re present on bnd A or B. 1 Note: In Menu 1 6 1, selection switches mong A, B, A:TX B:RX, nd A:RX B:TX. Select A:TX B:RX or A:RX B:TX when ccessing PACSAT {pge 7}. The selection in Menu 1 6 1 is invlid for n externl TNC. Use TX bnd trnsmit nd receive pckets through n externl TNC. using n externl TNC, ccess Menu 1 9 6 (DATA SPEED) nd select 1200 bps (defult) or 9600 bps s trnsfer rte between TNCs. This selection is vlid only for n externl TNC. TM-D700E nly: Do not select nrrow trnsmit devition on dt bnd. 5

DX PACKETCLUSTERS MNITR 2 DX PcketClusters re networks which consist nodes nd sttions who re interested in DXing nd contesting. If one sttion finds DX sttion on ir, he (or she) sends notice his (or her) node. Then this node psses informtion ll its locl sttions besides nor node. This trnsceiver cn disply received DX informtion nd hold ltest informtion on up 10 DX sttions. Use this function monir ltest DX informtion in your locl re. You cnnot send DX informtion node, using function. 1 Access Menu 3 I (DATA BAND) select bnd A or B. 6 Node If common trnsfer rte in your locl PcketCluster network is 9600 bps, ccess Menu 3 J (PACKET SPEED) nd select 9600 bps {pge 13}. 2 Tune frequency trget PcketCluster node. 3 Press [] (1 s), [TNC] enter APRS mode. The PACSATs receive (uplink) on VH nd trnsmit (downlink) on UH. Some m use M receive nd SSB trnsmit, nd operte t 1200 bps. The ors use M both receive nd trnsmit, nd operte t 9600 bps. This trnsceiver llows communictions with 9600 bps stellites. The PACSATs provide functions similr terrestril PBBSs. PACKET PATH AND DIGIPEATER A pcket pth specifies how APRS pckets should be trnsferred vi one or more repeters. A repeter, which is used for pcket trnsfer, is commonly clled digipeter. This cme from digitl repeter. A digipeter is usully locted on mountin p or high building. Unlike voice repeter, it opertes on simplex frequency. Ech volunteer who instlls digipeter progrms it eir s WIDE or RELAY type. Generlly WIDE trnsmits pckets over much greter distnces thn RELAY. In ny given re, re should be only one WIDE not cuse extr trffic or collisions on frequencies. A WIDE is cpble trnsferring pckets from nd djcent WIDEs. Like WIDE, re should be only one RELAY in given re; tht re is usully much smller thn WIDE. So, trnsmit pckets RELAY when you cnnot directly rech ny WIDE. The RELAY n will trnsfer pckets ny ccessible WIDE. n this trnsceiver, you cn edit pcket pth using mximum 79 lphnumeric chrcters. The defult is RELAY,WIDE tht is one common settings. With this setting, pckets will be trnsferred RELAY first, n WIDE. The APRS supports vrious methods for specifying pcket pth. Some those methods re described on pge 24. Method 1 (Specific Pth): Progrm cll signs one or more digipeters in sequence trnsfer rely; ex. KD6ZZV,K6RJZ. Method 2 (Generic Pth): Progrm RELAY nd/or WIDE; ex. RELAY,WIDE (or simply R,W ). In this exmple, your APRS pcket is trnsferred ny RELAY digipeter ner your position first, n ny WIDE digipeter. You cn lso progrm more thn one WIDE. If you enter WIDE,WIDE for exmple, your APRS pcket will be trnsferred ny WIDE ner your position first, n nor WIDE. Method 3 (WIDEN-N Pth): Progrm WIDEN-N, where both Ns indicte number WIDE digipeters be used for rely. If you enter WIDE3-3 (or simply W3) for exmple, your APRS pcket will be relyed by three WIDEs in ny direction. Method 4 (TRACEN-N Pth): The opertion is sme s WIDEN-N except tht digipeters dd ir cll signs your pcket before forwrding. You my progrm TRACE3-3 (or simply T3) for exmple. SELECTING STATUS TEXT TRANSMIT RATE A long sttus text string cn double size nd length APRS pcket. Access Menu 3 A nd specify how frequently sttus text is included in APRS pckets be trnsmitted. The selectble rnge is 1/1 1/8 nd (defult). If you select 1/3 for exmple, sttus text is included in your pckets once every 3 times; ccordingly sttions who receive your pckets will see your sttus text once every 3 times. 25 4

4 RESTRICTING RECEPTIN APRS DATA If APRS is populr in your re, you my receive o mny APRS pckets for short period. If this disturbs your APRS ctivities, specify distnce from your loction. You will not receive APRS pckets from sttions beyond this distnce. Access Menu 3 7 (PSITIN LIMIT) nd select rnge from 10 2500 in steps 10, plus (defult). A mximum 16 incoming or outgoing messges cn be held in messge memory. A messge not yet trnsmitted 5 times my be unexpectedly deleted. If oldest messge hs not been ccessed using List function when memory is full, new messge does not replce oldest messge.
