Discover Fiendish Fun on Parade 13 Years of Delightful Frights S ometimes 13 really can be a lucky number! Just ask Brian Sandahl, Senior Designer, Show Development and Productions, whose team has created a frighteningly fun new look to celebrate Haunted Mansion Holiday inspired by Tim Burton s The Nightmare Before Christmas, which opens when else on Friday the 13th of September, 2013. Brian, who has been part of the Haunted Mansion Holiday fun since it first began, is particularly excited about this year s plans. When we first decided to create Haunted Mansion Holiday more than 13 years ago, we weren t sure how Guests would respond. It was a huge investment of time and creativity and we had no idea how popular it would become, Brian recollects. It s very rewarding to see Guests return year after year to discover what s new. Some of them run directly to the Haunted Mansion the minute they enter Disneyland Park. In fact, Haunted Mansion Holiday has become so popular that this is the one time of year we offer FASTPASS entrance tickets. We add new surprises every year, Brian explains. But this year is one of the biggest refreshes we ve ever created. The new spookiness begins the moment Guests enter the Stretching Portrait Gallery, where a new animation effect will stretch imaginations to the screaming point. It s very cool, Brian tells us. Although he wants to keep the ultimate animation a surprise, think stained glass windows shattering CARDMEMBER MEMORIES and a peek-a-boo appearance by that master of scaremonies, Jack Skellington. We started working on our 13th Haunted Mansion Holiday plans about a year ago, Brian explains. We developed a concept for what we wanted to do and talked it over with the Creative Director, Steven Davison. Then we got to work. When the show is ready, it will take us about 2 to 2 ½ weeks to install. Surprises await in every cobwebbed corner of the mansion, including a fly-by visit from Zero. But we ve been sworn to secrecy about where, so it s up to you to spot Jack s loyal pup. One of Brian s favorite touches each year is the gingerbread house in the dining room. This year it focuses on Haunted Mansion Holiday s 13 years of delightfully frightful fun. In addition, Jack has added groups of 13 holiday surprises from skulls and snappy plants to slinky ribbons in every room. Look sharp to find them all. Be sure to commemorate your visit with a specially designed Haunted Mansion Holiday pin or a decorate-it-yourself Zombie cookie kit at The Nightmare Before Christmas merchandise cart located outside the mansion. Plus, fans of Tim Burton s The Nightmare Before Christmas can use their 10% savings on select merchandise purchases of $50 or more at select locations to pick up some eerily ing treats at the Port Royal store in New Orleans Square. 5 T he Headless Horseman charges down the street, followed by a brilliantly lit sign greeting Guests with a friendly Boo to You, and the spirited fun takes off with the Mickey s Boo-to-You Halloween Parade, during Mickey s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, a separate ticketed event, at Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort. During the event, party goers can get dressed up and trick-or-treat throughout the Park and enjoy the Happy Hallowishes fireworks show. But the parade has been a centerpiece of the party since its 2005 debut. We were developing the party and wanted to include as many of the Disney Characters as possible, says Tara Anderson, Show Director. A parade was the perfect way to do it. We just had to find the story that would connect Mickey Mouse and his friends from around Magic Kingdom Park. So we asked ourselves, If these Characters decided to throw their own Halloween celebrations, what would they look like? Mickey and his pals enjoy a costume party in a backyard gazebo, while Pooh and his friends decorate the Honey Tree. Captain Hook and his motley crew cavort on The Jolly Roger while Captain Barbossa and Jack Sparrow guard the treasure-filled caverns of Pirates of the Caribbean. What would Halloween be without the Haunted Mansion and its inhabitants like the Gravediggers who dance with shovels that throw sparks? We hadn t planned on those sparks, Tara recalls. But during rehearsals, one of the dancer s shovels made sparks when it struck the pavement, and we thought, let s keep that! So we figured out a way to make it happen all the time. But the biggest crowd pleasers are the Disney villains in all their wonderful wickedness. We had to let them out to play, Tara says. This is their holiday, after all! A grand finale wraps things up sweetly as Goofy appears on a brightly colored Candy Factory float accompanied by a Treat Squad distributing treats to the crowd. It s a big parade, Tara says, with about 120 performers and Characters and a dozen floats and vehicles. We always try to put in something new every year, whether it s a special effect or a new Character. In fact, 11 Characters can only be seen this time of year in the parade. But Tara believes it s the music that brings the parade s spirit to life. Music is everything, she says. It inspires the choreography and sets the overall tone. We ve incorporated many Disney songs, but we also wrote a new song for the villains, the Trick or Treat candy song for the finale and the parade theme song, Boo-to-You. Everyone loves that song, she says. I often hear Guests humming it hours after the parade has concluded. That s when I know they ve enjoyed the parade, and that my team and I have done our job well. So what would your celebration look like? After the parade, head to the s to take advantage of your Cardmember savings of 10% on select merchandise purchases of $50 or more at select locations to pick up costumes and decorations to put on your own spooky parade! 5 Mark Your Calendar Treat the family to some Halloween hilarity at Mickey s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort select evenings from September 10 to November 1, 2013. Sail Away with New Disney Magic Explore a World of Tastes 18th Annual Epcot International Food & Wine Festival Presented by T his October, when Disney Magic sets sail from Miami for four and five-night Caribbean sailings, Guests will find enchanting new delights from stem to stern, including newly refurbished kids areas, water-play features for every age, as well as updated dining venues and the adult After Hours area. Splashy upgrades to the water-play areas include the Aqua- Dunk. Our story is that Huey, Dewey and Louie designed it to give Unca Donald something to squawk about, says Peter Ricci, Show Designer and Production Manager for Walt Disney Imagineering. You go to the highest part of the ship, start with a vertical drop, then slide nearly 40 feet down, swinging 12 feet over the side of the ship. Kids can also frolic in the pop jets, geysers and bubblers or zip down the 250-foot-long Twist n Spout water slide at the 1,800 square-foot AquaLab. And tiny tots up to age 3 have their own splashing place too the new Nephews Splash Zone starring the mischievous trio. While staying true to the heritage of the Disney Magic s classic elegance and beauty, the Imagineers wanted to introduce some of Disney s favorite pals and places to the ship, including Pixie Hollow and Andy s Room. The Disney s Oceaneer Club for kids 3 to 12 will be completely redesigned to include the Marvel superheroes, who will have a home on a Disney Cruise Line ship for the first time. Lysa Migliorati, Senior Architect, Walt Disney Imagineering, is especially excited about the Marvel s Avengers Academy which encourages kids to discover their own inner superhero powers. All that fun plus the fresh ocean air is bound to work up appetites and the refurbished dining venues satisfy your hunger while delighting the senses with newly themed décor. Relax at the expanded Cabanas, inspired by Nemo and his Australian adventures. Or savor Brazilian-inspired cuisine in the bright, colorful atmosphere of Carioca s. But you ll never forget being a part of the show at Animator s Palate, a blackand-white animated world that magically transforms into full-color animation around you as you dine. Guests can even participate through the Animation Magic Show, which invites them to draw figures on a placemat, then watch those figures come to life and interact with the animation on the walls. Rotational dining allows Guests to enjoy each dining venue during their cruise. The same host and servers go with you to each dining area, Peter explains. They get to know you, your family and your preferences, so you re building a relationship. Want to listen to jazz, hear a comedy routine, watch a sporting event or even join in some Irish pub singing? The newly refurbished After Hours area for adults offers choices from the intimate elegance of Keys, a New York-style piano bar, to Fathoms, a high-energy night club and O Gills Pub, an Irish pub with music and friendly smiles always on tap. So pack your bags and add a little magic to your next. Everything we do is about inviting our Guests into the Disney story, Peter concludes. Every place on the ship has its own personality and story that we want our Guests to feel part of it. Visit DisneyCruise.com to find your perfect destination. Then come aboard, leave the everyday world behind, and set sail for some special times together. Anchors aweigh! Once again, it s time to explore over 25 international marketplaces offering authentic food and beverages from around the world, enjoy culinary and mixology demonstrations and special parties. This year there is much excitement around the newest marketplace, Scotland, alongside the return of crowd favorite Brazil to the marketplaces. The Scottish Government was so pleased by Disney Pixar s Brave that they approached us about what else we could do together, says Michael Jenner, Parks Event Content Development/Operations Manager. And the Scotland marketplace was born. We re working together very closely to choose beverages and dishes that reflect Scotland s rich culinary story, adds Michael. With classic Scottish dishes from salmon to Banoffee Tart and featuring fine scotches, there will be something to delight everyone s taste buds. In addition to the new marketplaces, you can enjoy Scotland, Land of Food & Drinks, a separate ticketed event, that allows you to discover the culture and cuisine of Scotland through lively ment and tasting stations of both food and drink. Separately ticketed events require additional fees and reservations. Bookings begin August 13, 2013. Want to travel farther than the Scottish Highlands? Michael also recommends the Party for the Senses, a Saturday night gala event featuring over 25 food stations and 25 beverage stations plus performances by Cirque du Soleil La Nouba. With so much to choose from, there will be plenty of flavors for even the most discerning palate to enjoy. Tasting your way around the world is even more delightful when you have your own world in which to relax and recharge. As a Cardmember, you can take advantage of the Chase Lounge to sit back, recharge your cell phone, enjoy complimentary soft drinks or even catch up on some of your favorite sports on TV. After you are refreshed and ready for more, grab your passport and head out to do it all over again. There s so much to try here, it really helps to plan ahead, Michael says. Disney Planes In theaters in 3D August 9, 2013 Take to the Skies W hat if you had a dream that seemed so high above you it would take all your courage to face your fears and follow it? Would you try to soar? Or would you keep your wheels and wings on the ground? That s the theme of Disney Planes, an actionpacked animated comedy adventure from Disneytoon Studios which takes off in theaters on August 9, 2013. Dusty (voiced by Dane Cook) is a crop duster who would give his struts to compete as a high-flying racer. There s just one problem he s not exactly built for racing and he s afraid of heights. An unlikely hero indeed! So how did he fly into being? We wanted to expand the world of Cars, recalls Jeffrey Howard, writer. And we re all aviation buffs, so we liked the idea of a movie about planes and air racing, which is the fastest sport in the world. About four and a half years ago, we sat in a room for most of a day and asked ourselves who would be the least likely to race. And there was Dusty a chunky little crop duster built for tooling along over farm lands. Once we had Dusty, everything else took off. We figured out all the story basics that day. We still had a lot to develop along the way, but the nuts and bolts were there. Naturally, to develop the film characters required intensive research into actual planes. Characters come about in a lot of different ways, Jeffrey explains. For instance, during our research we found a lot about flying cars. We had to include one and naturally it would have a sort of dual personality I m a plane a car a plane! How does a character s personality affect the way it looks? Animation is such a collaborative and visual process. The artists need to know everything from what the characters are going through and what challenges they face to how chunky or sleek, how beat up or clean they should be. Everyone joins in the story meetings and everyone contributes ideas. That s the Disney process. If an idea makes the movie better, we use it. As the writer, does Jeffrey ever make visual suggestions about the characters appearance or expressions? Sure, I ll chime in sometimes, he says with a laugh, but it s usually something like Wow! That looks AWESOME! John Lasseter, Chief Creative Officer of Disneytoon Studios, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar, has a favorite maxim that also guided every aspect of character development, according to Jeffrey. It is be true to the metal. Whatever character we created, the artists had to stay true to the way the planes are built and move. For Dusty, we needed to understand crop dusters. They don t fly over 1,000 feet; they fly slow and they go back and forth over the same geographical area. Understanding those parameters definitely impacted Dusty s story. Air racing challenges him in every possible way. Will he have the props to try? Once you know the main character s journey, you begin figuring out who is going to stand in his way, and who s going to help him, Jeffrey notes. Obviously Dusty faces naysayers as well as planes who actively try to keep him from winning like Ripslinger and his cronies. And of course every hero needs a friend. In Dusty s case, it s (drum roll, please) the irrepressible El Chupacabra (El Chu), a flamboyant Gee Bee from Mexico. Gee Bees are classic old-time racing planes, Jeffrey explains. They are all engine with stubby wings they look sort of squat. But don t tell El Chu that! He laughs. The intensely charming El Chu is a legend in Mexico just ask him. Low key isn t in his vocabulary and his booming voice and charisma are as big as his oversized engine. So, it turns out, is his heart. This is El Chu s first international air race, too, Jeffrey says. He may be famous in Mexico, but in this race, he s an unproven newcomer like Dusty. He s the first guy who takes a liking to Dusty. He may be loud and a bit of a braggart, but he s a very positive, supportive guy. We had a lot of fun with him. Heroes also need teachers and mentors. Enter Skipper, an iconic WWII F4 Corsair. But Skipper has his own issues, Jeffrey says. He s afraid to get back in the air. Dusty not only learns from Skipper, he inspires him. Both of them help each other along the way. Everyone should have someone like Skipper in their lives. In Cars, Lightning McQueen is already a great racer with an ego to match, and he has to learn about family and friends. Dusty has a different path. He starts out as a likeable, friendly guy, but no one takes his dream seriously at first, and he begins the race as a nobody. But Dusty has that little something extra that shines under the hood. Dusty wants something more and he has to prove to himself that he can do it. I think it s a universal feeling, There s got to be something more for me, concludes Jeffrey. Find High-Flying Fun at Disney Store Who gets to spend their work day launching toy planes into co-workers offices? Sean Lee, Senior Designer, Toys for Disney Store, whose team designed the new Planes toys available now at Disney Store and DisneyStore.com. According to Sean, playing with the toys he and his team are designing is actually a very important part of the development process. You have to get in touch with your inner child in order to figure out what s fun, what kids will enjoy, what will make it a more exciting experience, he says. We are always asking ourselves What will make this magical? In the case of the new Planes toys, kids imaginations can take off into the wide blue yonder with over 15 die-cast planes featuring rolling wings, spinning propellers and great detailing. Kids can keep their collection ready to fly in the Hector Vector Die-Cast Carrier. For launching laughs indoors and out, the Planes Aircraft Launchers set features three foam planes and a launch pad that sends Dusty, Echo and Bravo flying, just as Sean s team personally tested. The fun keeps on gaining altitude with four Talking Action Figures featuring Dusty, El Chu, Echo and Bravo. The 9-to-10-inch figures feature turning propellers, rolling wheels, lights and sound effects. Each character says over 10 unique film phrases. There s so much humor in the film, Sean says. Incorporating this many lines from the film really lets kids relive the adventure. The Flying Rescue Heli Playset gives fledgling fliers an opportunity to flex their imaginations by manipulating levers Take Off with Some Tunes 12 Doc McStuffins: The Doc is In NEED 10 FPO to circle Hector Vector, the helicopter, over an aircraft carrier to rescue Dusty. I love working on something large scale and super-detailed like this set, Sean says. It s fun to add special touches like chopper sound effects. Sean is especially proud of the way the characters personalities are incorporated in the Planes toys. Disney Toon Studios sent us hundreds of reference drawings and we put a lot of effort into capturing the characters facial expressions as well as the detail that brings the storytelling to life, he says. For example, for the action figure of Skipper, the retired WWII Corsair, we added the rust spots, exhaust marks and chipped paint you d expect to see on an older plane. He looks really cool! This has been a really fun project. The story is so full of humor and heart, and the characters have such terrific personalities and looks. It s been exciting to incorporate all that into the toys. Everything we do is about bringing the story to life for kids in their own family rooms and backyards, Sean says. It always amazes me to see how kids will start with the film story and then expand on the adventures with their own creativity. I personally think the best toys are a catalyst for imagination. That s what we aim for with every toy we design. It s what Disney is all about. Bring home some fuel for imagination when you take advantage of your Cardmember savings of 10% on select merchandise purchases of $50 or more to give some high-flying fun to the little pilots in your home. 3 Happy landings! When they are doorways to imagination, according to Jason Johnson, Manager Design, Disney Store. I think role-play costumes create long-lasting impressions. Kids become the character and feel empowered by that character s personality, he says. This year, mermaids of all ages will find a selection of beautiful new costumes inspired by the release of The Little Mermaid Diamond Edition DVD (see page 12). For classic characters, my team and I always start by asking ourselves how we can make the costumes new and special. We are often inspired by the fashion world. For instance, this year, we ve used cascading ruffles and ribbon streamers to suggest Ariel s fin. We also are adding more interactive elements. The Little Mermaid Limited Edition costume includes a singing shell cameo. When you open it, it plays a segment from Part of Your World. For new films, we stay as true and authentic as possible, Jason explains. For example, when we created our designs for Oz the Great and Powerful, we studied the actual film costumes. The Wicked Witch s costume is leather in the film, and we couldn t do that, but we found great-looking leather-like fabric. When we took our costumes to the studio for approvals, the people who actually had worked on the film couldn t tell the difference. Also new this year for girls, Disney Store offers a dazzling array of Disney Princess gowns and costumes from Disney Junior s Sofia the First and Doc McStuffins. Pirates are a perennial favorite and yo-ho-hos abound with costumes inspired by Jake and the Never Land Pirates and Peter Pan. Boys can ride the range with the Lone Ranger and Tonto, or save the world as Hulk, Captain America or Iron Man. These are iconic characters, Jason points out, so we stay true to their look, but we add textures and as much light-up and glow in the dark as possible. It s the special touches that set a Disney Store costume apart, Jason believes. We are designing for Disney Store Guests, so it s important for us to create costumes of the highest quality. For instance, this our wands and crowns will all be quality metal pieces. It makes them more substantial and special. I love what I do, he concludes. I like to imagine kids today who love their superhero or princess costumes so much, they save them and will someday pass them on to their own sons and daughters. So spark imagination with your Cardmember savings of 10% on select merchandise purchases of $50 or more at DisneyStore.com and Disney Store locations, and treat all the little tricksters in your family. 3 11

I had almost completely forgotten about that audition, recalls Jodi Benson, whose sparkling performance gave the feisty princess with red hair the voice that has made her and her story part of our world. I was so surprised. That moment was completely miraculous and life-changing. With its cast of unforgettable characters, beautiful animation and memorable music and songs, Disney s The Little Mermaid (1989) is one of the most celebrated animated films of all time. It is credited with starting the renaissance of Disney animation and bringing Broadway to animation. Now spectacularly transformed for the first time on Blu-ray, Ariel, a free-spirited mermaid, is off on the adventure of a lifetime with her best friend, the adorable Flounder, and the reggae-singing Caribbean crab Sebastian at her side. The digitally restored picture and brilliant high-definition sound captures the richness and variety of the music in this Disney classic. Music plays such a vital role in the film, it could almost be thought of as a character in and of itself. To create the film s seven songs and score, composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman worked closely with film directors Ron Clements and John Musker to weave the songs into the story, revealing the characters personalities and moving the action forward. It also meant working together to find the perfect voices for every character most especially Ariel, the 16-year-old princess with big dreams and the spirit and determination to make them come true. In animation, we look for unique voices that give the animators a lot to work with, explains John Musker, Director. For Ariel, we knew we needed someone with a very unique speaking voice who was also an excellent singer. At one point we even talked about using a different voice for the speaking and singing Ariel. Auditions were held in Los Angeles and New York, and the 12 Finding the Voice of The Little Mermaid directors heard hundreds of talented performers. But when Howard Ashman sent us a cassette of the New York auditions, Jodi stood out in terms of the sweetness of her singing voice and the youthfulness of her speaking voice, recalls Ron Clements, Director. For Jodi, who was used to performing on stage, the recording experience seemed challenging at first. I had never been in front of a microphone or in a recording studio before, she explains. My experience was in live theater, where you use your facial expressions and your entire body to communicate the emotion of a song, she says. In recording all you have to work with is your voice, so I was definitely nervous. I had never done anything like that before and I didn t know if I had what it would take. Although Ariel is 16 and Jodi was beyond her own teenage years, capturing the little mermaid s youthful tones was no problem. I have always had a young-sounding voice, Jodi says. Mostly I focused on Ariel s emotions and letting them come through. Even that wasn t always easy. There were times when I was giving it my all, and I d feel as if emotionally I was right where I needed to be, but it wasn t coming through in my voice. Howard would say stop overthinking it close your eyes. They would dim the lights and try to create a feeling of what it was like in the grotto. He would come out and play the other parts with me. I knew I was in good hands with him. Drawing from her own memories and dreams helped Jodi bring Ariel to life as well. And today, of course, she knows what it feels like to like Ariel have those dreams come true. What has it meant for Jodi Benson to be the voice of Ariel? Everything! she exclaims. Just everything! I know I ve been part of something that has touched so many children s lives. No matter where I am or what I m doing, someone will come up and tell me what Ariel means to them. It s a huge responsibility and I take it very seriously. Dive into the magic and music of Disney s The Little Mermaid Diamond Edition, available for the first time on Blu-ray and HD digital, starting October 1, by using your Disney Dream Reward Dollars toward vouchers to use at participating retailers. 2 W hen Nancy Kanter, President of Disney Junior, wanted to do a children s show that featured Captain Hook, Mark Seidenberg, Producer, had one question: Can Hook keep his hook? When Nancy said yes, Mark said, I m in. The development team, including Bob Gannaway and Rob LaDuca, came up with the idea of a group of young pirate pals, and Jake and the Never Land Pirates set sail. For Jake and his friends, Mark and the team looked to their own childhoods. We wanted Jake to be someone kids would identify with, Mark says. He s a hero, he s courageous, and he s a good friend to all. Most of all, he is fun. Every series needs a villain, and Captain Hook was a natural. We made a conscious decision to play up his comic side, Mark explains. He s a baddy, but he s more silly than scary. Kids love to see Jake foil Captain Hook, and they also like it when Jake and his crew do something nice for Hook. As the show has evolved, new characters have joined the crew, including Mama Hook, voiced by Sharon Osbourne. A pirate in her younger days, Mama Hook is a warm, nurturing character who just wants her son to be the best pirate he can be, according to Mark. A new Mama Hook Knows Best short is slated to premiere this. New characters are always inspired by the main characters and who they would react with, Mark says. It s the same with story ideas. When you have rich characters, it s not hard to come up with stories for them. I just put myself in their place and ask myself what would motivate them. There are so many ways to join Jake and his crew on their adventures. From the upcoming Mama Hook Knows Best picture storybook, available September 17, to Jake s Never Land Rescue special programming event on Disney Junior this, all your little mateys will want to sail to Never Land.
