MAKE IT HAPPEN! GUIDE 1

WELCOME TO YOUR MAKE IT HAPPEN! GUIDE This guide is for you and your team to use as you create, develop and prepare your Make It Happen! project. Please read everything in the document and ask your teacher if you have any questions. WHAT IS MAKE IT HAPPEN!? Make It Happen! is an event that showcases interesting and exciting ideas created by you, the Taqaddam students. These ideas are developed through your Taqaddam journey using learning from the programme. The idea will address a need in the communities that you are part of. Think about what inspires us in our communities. Get of our comfort zones and try new things! We appreciate the people that live in our communities. Think about and apply things that are important to us as individuals. To Make It Happen! we believe that by actioning great ideas we can create kinder, healthier, more positive communities. 2

WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO FOR MY MAKE IT HAPPEN! PROJECT? You are invited to create and develop an idea that fits the criteria below: Create and develop an idea that makes a POSITIVE CHANGE in YOUR COMMUNITY. 1. Your idea must be ACHIEVABLE, that is, you and your team could actually MAKE IT HAPPEN! 2. Your idea must be INNOVATIVE, that is, it is new and/or builds on an idea that other people have already had. 3. You must work as a TEAM during the process of creating your idea. 4. You must be able to show that there is a NEED, and that is why you have created your idea. 5. Your idea must be something that you and your team CARE about. You and your team will present this idea at the national MAKE IT HAPPEN! showcase at the end of the Taqaddam programme. WHAT WILL HAPPEN DURING THE PROGRAMME? At the first workshop You will be introduced to the Make It Happen! project and the brief. You will have a go at generating some ideas that might improve the lives of the people in your community. You can ask the workshop leaders and the people from HSBC and the British Council any questions you have about the project. At school After the first Taqaddam workshop, you will be placed into teams (all of you will be Taqaddam students). You will have weekly classes during which where there will be opportunities to develop your Make It Happen! project. Throughout the programme there are Make It missions. These missions are there to help you and your team build and grow your Make It Happen! idea. You will use the online platform and your handbook to complete the Make It missions. You can also use your handbook to make notes and draw pictures of your ideas and thoughts. You can ask your teacher if you have any questions about the project. 3

At the second workshop You will have a chance to develop your ideas with people from other schools. You can get advice and support on your idea from HSBC volunteers and the workshop leaders. At the Make It Happen! event You will present your idea to your fellow students, to teachers and to professionals from HSBC, the British Council and beyond! You will reflect on how what you have learnt and how you have used your learning from Taqaddam - the strengths, the skills and the journey as a whole. You will look at other team s ideas and ask questions about what they did and why. You will even be able to vote for your favourite idea! Certificates and prizes will be given to individuals and teams that show they have developed brilliant ideas and awesome character strengths over the course of the programme. WHAT DOES A TOTALLY BRILLIANT MAKE IT HAPPEN! IDEA LOOK LIKE? A TOTALLY BRILLIANT Make It Happen! idea will... Seek to make a positive change in the community. Be achievable - something that you and your team could actually do yourself. Small steps = giant leaps! Not have been done before, or will build on a product/service/thing that already exists, making it even better! Find a solution to an issue that you and your team really care about. Be well researched - you can show that there is a real need. 4

WHAT DOES A TOTALLY BRILLIANT MAKE IT HAPPEN! TEAM LOOK LIKE? A TOTALLY BRILLIANT Make It Happen! Team will show that they have... 1. Been as CREATIVE and IMAGINATIVE as possible when developing the Make It Happen! idea. Thinking outside of the box is essential. 2. Showed great CITIZENSHIP and care for their COMMUNITY. 3. COMMUNICATED and COLLABORATED well as a team. Understanding and playing to each individual s strengths in the group is key. 4. SOLVED a PROBLEM in the community and THOUGHT CRITICALLY - found different opinions in the community, researched issues and analysed a number of ways to help. 5. Showed LEADERSHIP by listening to each other, starting something, going ahead and trying it out! Prizes will be awarded for ideas that most closely meet the criteria on page 4. There will also be prizes for ideas that win the most votes from the Taqaddam students, teachers and judges. Teachers will also be nominating some of their amazing students, who they feel have grown in the five character strengths. Go to the next page to remind yourself of the five strengths. 5

The MAKE IT HAPPEN! project will help you to GROW your awesome CHARACTER STRENGTHS. Taqaddam aims to help young people, just like you, to use their strengths to support POSITIVE CHANGE in their COMMUNITIES. 6

WHAT SUPPORT IS THERE FOR ME? The Taqaddam classes and your teacher are there to help you through your Make It Happen! journey. It you want more guidance and support then we have provided you with some key things that you can do and/or could consider for your Make It Happen! project. Read the following information for help on how you and your team can create, document and present your Make It Happen! idea. If you have any further questions, be sure to ask your Taqaddam teacher. The information in the following pages is split into 5 steps: 1. GENERATING IDEAS 2. DECIDING ON AN IDEA AS A TEAM 3. BUILDING ON YOUR IDEA 4. REFLECTING ON YOUR LEARNING AND ACHIEVEMENTS 5. PRESENTING YOUR IDEA AT THE MAKE IT HAPPEN! EVENT 7

1. GENERATING IDEAS As well as the Taqaddam classes Here are some idea generation techniques to help you start out on this jou Mash Up Idea Generation Random Word Association The Six Thinking Hats 5 Why s At this stage, certain behaviours and ways of thinking will really help you and your team to come up with interesting and new ideas. Use these pointers to guide you... There are no bad ideas! Don t be scared to say something that you think might be silly. Anything that starts discussion is good. Encourage your teammates to do the same. Quantity is quality - don t think of the end point straight away, just get ideas out of your head. The more you share, the more creative you are and the better your ideas will be. Be ambitious - don t worry about if things are practical or possible - stretch your ideas. As a team you can share, improve and grow each other's ideas. Work to build your ideas up together. 8

2. DECIDING ON AN IDEA AS A TEAM It is important that your idea is INNOVATIVE and ACHIEVABLE. To filter down your ideas, try this exercise: Draw a simple graph like the one above on paper. Write against the bottom line innovative idea (new, original and exciting) and achievable idea (easy to make) against the other line. Write all the ideas you have come up with on different post-it notes (don t copy the ones above!) and, one by one, place them on the graph. The ideas nearest the red line are the most promising, as they are both innovative and achievable. You and your team should then take forward the idea that is nearest the red line and that you care about or are the most excited about. 3. BUILDING ON YOUR IDEA Once you have picked your idea, start to build it up. Think about the following questions: Does your idea solve an issue or a problem? If yes, how? How will your idea work? What will you need to make your idea into a reality? How will the people who are benefiting from your idea access it? How will you encourage people to access your idea? What will make it attractive to them? 9

4. REFLECTING ON YOUR LEARNING AND ACHIEVEMENTS As you go through your Make It Happen! journey, it is important that you think about what you are learning, what you are achieving and how this process might help you in your future. If you are comfortable doing so, this information will be useful to share on the day of the Make It Happen! event. We suggest the following steps to help you with your reflection 1. Mark out what you have ACHIEVED in your Make It Happen! journey each week. For example, in first week your achievement may be getting to know my team and brainstorming ideas. 2. Each week, with your team or on your own, think about what you have LEARNT from your time spent on the Make It Happen! project. Write it down! Draw it! Take a photo! 3. Show your progress through the project - keep notes, sketches and details about the decisions you made at different points of the journey. All of this documentation will be useful for you to see how much your team has achieved, and how you did it! 4. Towards the end of the Make It Happen! project, start to think about how you want to take your learning forward after the programme has ended. Would you like to progress your idea and make it real? Would you like to talk to others and share your experience? 10

5. PRESENTING YOUR IDEA AT THE MAKE IT HAPPEN! EVENT At your Make It Happen! event you will have the opportunity to present your idea with your team. There are many ways in which you can do this in an interesting and exciting way. Visual presentations are a great opportunity to show off your skills. We have listed some options for presenting below and added photos from the first year for inspiration! Make a poster or two! Create a model or prototype of your idea Draw a storyboard Film and show a video Present slides on PowerPoint (you will need to provide your own computer for this option) 11

Lastly, think about what you will SAY during your presentation... How will you explain your idea? How will you show the process you followed in creating your idea? How will you prove that your idea is innovative and achievable? How will you show that the idea addresses an issue in your community? Will you talk about how you have developed your STRENGTHS and SKILLS? If yes, how have you done this? The image part with relationship ID rid5 was not found in the file. 12

GOOD LUCK ON YOUR MAKE IT HAPPEN! JOURNEY AND WE HOPE YOU ENJOY TAQADDAM! 13
